To say that the there was a great increase in Democratic voter turnout without basing it on prior turnout is ridiculous. If there is an substantial increase in turnout compared to 2004 or 2000 then it is important.

Where are the turnout numbers for 2004? Not mention of it in the posting.
What are the numbers for this primary? Without those numbers one cannot gauge the the possibilities.

And for the poster stating that the turnout was more than the earlier primaries combined is another useless statement. Unless those other states have nearly the same population as South Carolina it is an incredibly worthless comparison.

If Obama got 55% of the total Dem vote in SC in '08, then I think this means that for this to be true, the total Dem vote must have increased by at least 100*(1/.55 - 1)% = 81.8%, when comparing their '08 primary to their '04 primary.

From this link www.ajc.com/news/content/news/stories/2008/01/22/delegates_0123.html we have

"Total vote-wise, Clinton has received 436,000, Obama 105,000 and Edwards 49,000"

I can't find the '04 numbers. Looked at www.scvotes.org/statistics/election_returns but can't find it there. If I could find the total Dem primary voters for '04, we could easily see if the increase was indeed 81%. Certainly wouldn't surprise me.
