1. Obama would have to pick a national security person. It would be tough
to loose a VA senate seat though.

3. Some states require a special election shortly after a Sen. vacates.
Not sure about VA. A Dem. may only be appointed for a short while.

17. Virginia residents - what are your laws on Senate vacancies?
A Google search did not reveal anything about how Virginia handles vacancies to US Senate seats.

Next door West Virginia requires a special election at the next federal election (2 years).

If this is the same in Virginia then when Jim Webb became Vice President, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine could appoint a Democrat for two years to fill Webb's vacant US Senate seat. Two years should be time enough to take advantage of the "incumbent" label.

14. I just read that Gov Selelius is the daughter of a former OH Governor:
A Cincinnati Democrat gets the last word over Bush

A Democrat from Cincinnati will be delivering the Democratic response to President Bush'sfinal State of the Union address.

A Cincinnati Democrat who happens to be governor of Kansas.

Kathleen Sebelius, daughter of former Ohio governor John J. Gilligan, will follow Bush's speech with the Democratic take on where the country stands.

That was news to me!

15. I voted for Webb.
We'll be getting another Democratic Senate seat here in Virginia once Warner retires, and our former Governor, also a Warner but having no relation, will take his place in an uncontested race.

I don't want Webb to be Obama's VP. It will be hard to find a replacement for him in the Senate, and we'd already be losing one seat if Obama wins.
