Obama camp, tongue in cheek, declares Florida a tie .... 0 to 0.
Obama Camp, Tongue in Cheek, Declares Fla. Tie

By Garance Franke-Ruta

Still in high spirits after the Obama campaign's landslide South Carolina victory, Barack Obama spokesman Bill Burton tonight appeared to mock his own campaign's frantic post-Nevada caucus delegate count focus, as well as the Clinton campaign's more recent focus on the state of Florida, which today held an unsanctioned Democratic Party primary.

At 6:42 p.m., Burton sent reporters a message with the subject line, "fyi... based on exit polling data our campaign is prepared to call the delgate count at 7 pm eastern" and one-word message body, "Developing..."

That reference to the delegates at stake in the contest was the Obama campaign's cue to e-mail literalists that it in fact was joking and had no plans to break an exit poll embargo while polls were still open, an act tantamount to voter-suppression, for there were no actual delegates at stake tonight. The Democratic National Committee stripped the state of its delegates last year as punishment for moving its primary so early in the calendar, in violation of DNC rules, and the candidates pledged not to campaign in Florida.

In case anyone missed that point, at 8:01 p.m., moments after CNN called Florida for Clinton, Burton followed up: "Breaking..." he wrote, "Obama and Clinton tie for delegates in Florida. 0 for Obama, 0 for Clinton."

I'll give them a pass though; this doesn't bode well for their campaign.

10. 0 Delegates? How about 0 electoral votes in November when Floridians find out.....
...how the Democrats screwed them out of their precious voting rights. Almost 2 million Democrats - including more than half a million Obama voters, also screwed by their could-care-less-about-their-voting-rights candidate.

17. Guess you'll have no one to blame
but Dr. Dean??? Were you a "Deaniac" in the last go round?? I knew there were a lot of them on this board at the time. He's the head of the DNC.

The states all want to make up their OWN rules and the hell with the rest of the country. So you "takes your picks" I don't like to see anyone's voting rights jeopardized, but as a mother, I know when you promise punishment for not following the rules, you had better follow through, if you know what's good for you and your children. I blame Michigan, and Fla. they chose to go this route, and the Dem . candidates PROMISED not to campaign there, now they want to change the rules in the middle of the game!!! Is that fair, or even ethical? Not in my book!

22. This is more gripping evidence of how screwed up these elections are.
On this forum board and on others I know of, it's mostly about partisan attachments to favorite candidates. That is not always bad, unless such adherences become obsessive and critically interfere with the election process.

That is what is happening. A very flawed nomination process that cannot be controlled by the nominating mechanisms contrived by political hackery has left voters denied their equal participation in their governance.

Time for a simplified, national primary. We are almost there - see February 5. Why not have all the states on the same - weekend?

28. Wanna get really steamed?
Consider that Hillary's request to seat the delegates may not have been entirely altruistic. Putting aside the ethics of the maneuver, she still would have won had she not made the request, but the margins would have been different -- and she needed as big a win as possible to cover her massive loss in the contested South Carolina primary.

Chalk-up another in the "do anything" column.

spin. Don't even
start about the 0
delegates, it is
still a victory
for the Clinton
campaign. A victory
of more support and
of more approval.

16. No there is a difference...
she had more approval
and support than Obama.
No delegates are needed
to prove this.

Hell, even my guy Biden
got votes but, I still see
it as a victory for Hillary.

Don't let your rabid support
of Obama make you continually
assume anyone who speaks against
him is a Hillary supporter.

18. Zero delegates is worth precisely that -- Zero delegates.

It's unfortunate that your own case of rabies precludes reason and common sense on your part.

Your pissy attitude reflects that of the candidate you rally for here - rabid? - poor sportsmanship. Hillary signed on to Howard Dean's DNC plan months ago regarding Florida and Michigan.

What's different? Oh yeah, that's right, she got her ass womped in Iowa and So. Carolina and won by two measly percentage points in New Hampshire and Nevada.

That's the truth. That's reality. Whether or not you accept that is of no concern to me. But zero is zero any way you count it.

19. How can you call my attitude pissy?!?
Look at your snark and
attacks across this board
to anyone not a member of
the Cult of Obama.
I had even been following
his politics since the last election.
He alone has caused me to lose interest
in supporting him.
I have done my homework, just because
I do not support him does not make
it a fallacy to say Hillary won.

It takes support and votes to win
delegates in the states that have them.
She got the votes and support Obama
didn't, that is the zero I see.

Spin it how you will, view it as you
will. Doesn't make you any righter
or in any better reality than I am.
Learn how to accept an opposing point
of view, you don't have to agree with it
but, you can discuss it without melting
down to a rabid supporter.

Look up rabid in that context, it does
not mean you have rabies...geeez :eyes:

23. And now you are resorting to personal attacks because you're feeling all icky inside tonight.
That should be a clue that you haven't a leg to stand on this little dust-up de jour here at DU.

Hillary knew the rules because she signed on to them. And all of a sudden they are a problem? Riiiight.

She is trying to claim "victory" in Michigan when not everyone was on the ballot.

Get back to us when there is an actual democratic election where all the candidates participate and campaign. THAT is the true measure of support.

And still in the end, zero Florida delegates were awarded.

Your hissyfit punctuated with personal attacks is precious. I mean it.

24. Ooooh...
a drama llama.

I still haven't got
a candidate I support.
Gore wouldn't run, Biden
didn't have enough support
to continue, Hillary and
Obama and their camps are
getting down to sandbox
politics, right now that
leaves Edwards and Kucinich.
You would be amazed at the
undecided just like myself
that there are here on DU.

Personal attacks, you accused
me of having rabies, when I used
the word rabid, in the context I
used it in, it did not mean that.
You also continued to assume I
am a Hillary supporter which I
am not. My mere observations are
not personal attacks anymore than
what you said were. So if you
continue to assert that I made
personal attacks you have to admit
that you are guilty of the same.

Maybe you should figure out what REALLY is on your mind instead of lashing out and getting it on everyone around you.

I still don't give a crap who you support. I really don't give a crap who anyone supports.

And zero delegates is still zero.

14. Obama wouldn't say that in the scenario that many Obama supporters want to happen.
The one where Obama summarily doesn't allow them to be seated at the convention. Which will actually result in a brokered convention and the nomination will not be Obama's.
