Results from FL show low turnout for Dems relative to GOP
Republicans pulled out a total of 1,920,169 voters while the Democrats only pulled out 1,683,984 (data from CNN.com)

The following data comes from FL SOS (http://election.dos.state.fl.us/voterreg/registration.asp)

This means Republicans had a 50% turnout while the Dems had only a 40% turnout. This stands in stark contrast to the voting of the primaries so far. Dems have had consistently higher turnout in all primaries except Michigan (another state where the delegates won't be counted).

Even worse, overall turnout of voters was less than 35%, indicating that the independents stayed home.

The relatively low Dem turnout (relative to the Rep turnout) and nearly non-existant independent vote could be explained by the fact that the Democratic delegates aren't going to be counted.

This is a silver lining for Obama since high turnout and independent votes have been going predominantly for him (based on primary results so far).

If this is true, the apparent loss of Florida may have another silver lining: it may get independents and leaning Obama supporters off the couch next Tuesday for another record turnout.

1. The gop didn't do that much better, nothing to brag about.
I think the Dems had great turnout considering the mess.

2. Given the fact that the Dems have over 4 million voters, Hillary failed to inspire more than 20%
Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 08:41 AM by berni_mccoy
The turnout was bad compared to the other primaries to date.

5. The vast MAJORITY did stay home. There are over 2 million indpendents
Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 08:46 AM by berni_mccoy
Hillary got 40% of the ones that voted which amounts to less than fraction of a percent of the independent vote. The turnout for the election was low overall.

Why?

11. CNN shows results of exit polling:

On page 3 of 6, it's clear that she got 17% indie and 4% republican.

19. We have a closed primary here in FL - Independants don't get to vote at all.
Please show me a link to your stats, because they are impossible.

4. Why would anybody have voted when the vote didn't count?
I think those results are great - I wouldn't have hauled my butt over to a polling place for absolutely nothing. I give those people a lot of credit.

12. The state violated their agreement with the party. I don't have a problem counting the votes either
But for Clinton to say she could do something about it was a pandering lie.

13. highest dem turnout in decades
http://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20080130/NEWS/801300489

DAVIE -- No delegates and no candidates. And yet more than a million Democrats turned out to vote in Florida. In Sarasota, more than half of registered Democrats came to the polls.

The highest turnout in decades, despite a campaign boycott by all the Democratic candidates, was proof to political experts of both parties that the Republicans may not have a big advantage going into the general election after all -- even if they were here for a six-month head start.

"Their candidates haven't done a day of campaigning, there's not a single delegate riding on this, and the Democrats are going to the polls and voting," said Mac Stipanovich, a longtime Republican Florida strategist who is working on Sen. John McCain''s campaign. "I think they'll be back in November."

16. It may be highest turnout, but it's still low relative to the current primary trend
And for good reason: Democratic delegates are not going to be counted. This suppressed what would have been truly astounding turnout as has been happening in the other states.

23. You are WRONG
According to the Florida Department of State Division of Elections:

Tuesday's Turnout: 37.7%
But guess what? They didn't have turnout numbers for Broward, Madison, and Monroe counties.
Broward reported they had a high turnout. There was a 47% turnout in Monroe county for registered Democrats according to their website. Madison had 38% according to their website.

Past Presidential Primary Elections:

2004 - 20%
2000 - 19%
1996 - 29%
1992 - 38%
1988 - 43%
1984 - 33%
1980 - 43%
1976 - 56%
1972 - 58%

15. Hillary received an historic vote for the Presidential Primaries in Florida.
That other democrats attempt to negate what will be recorded in the history of Florida by spinning the results is truly shameful.

24. Sorry, but you truly did not present facts.
Independents do not receive the names of the party candidates on their ballots.

Independents receive a ballot with consitutional issues and things of that nature.

When only Democrats are allowed to vote in our Primary, Clinton wins huge.

I'm frankly amazed so many Democrats voted knowing that the results most likely won't count. I thought it was an amazing showing under the circumstances.

30. Interesting that that got no coverage
That certainly explains why then numbers were fairly equal between the Ds and the Rs, even though the Ds did not campaigning or advertising (with a few very minor exceptions).

25. Floridians were also voting on Constitutional Revision regarding Property Tax Exemptions
If you don't think that will bring out voters then you are mistaken.

In addition they had local city races that were their general elections.

I think it is actually good news. What a turnout for a non-election.
