6. Maybe it was..
the pundits speculating that he would split some of the rural votes in some of the states with Obama. Maybe he did not want to be the one to take votes away from Obama when he did not feel he had a very good shot at winning? I don't know. All I know is that I'm very sad right now. :(

2. He can throw his support to Obama before Super-Duper-Pooper-Scooper Tuesday
Or is it Monster Madness World Wrestling Tuesday? Whatever. This is a good thing for the Obama campaign.

4. I am guessing one of two things......either his wifes cancer is getting worse or...
he wants to make sure Obama wins.

Maybe he is trying to setup a VP spot.

13. I hope it's not Elizabeth's health.
Such a great couple. I am so angry at the way the media virtually ignored him. A great guy.

The best to John and his family.

Peace:thumbsup:

5. campaigning for Super Tuesday would cost a lot of money
if he decided it was a lost cause he wouldn't have wanted to waste the money.

8. My thoughts

He's fought against a MSM that has not given him the time of day. In today's system this is akin to trying to stop the tide from coming in.

He knows full well that the Repubs are coalescing around McCain, unifying in lockstep.

To continue would continue to make this a three-way horserace. If anything, he'll want to work to unify the party around a candidate.

As an Edwards supporter I'm disappointed that he's out, but understand that this is the ways things can work. Working against annointed candidates and a vacuous MSM is daunting work.

Me? I'm hoping he goes w/ HRC.

A McCain-Huckabee/Lieberman/whatever ticket is going to galvanize folks.

This election--at all levels--is far from a slam dunk, folks.

It is time--NOW--to gird the loins, sharpen the weapons, and get ready for an ugly ugly fight.

This election is the turning point. I think Edwards realizes this.

9. yep, money, Maybe he just sees no point in continuing either.
He would just come in distant third as he loses more funding. Would not help his future.

10. Money
To have any chance to compete in the Super Tuesday, he'll need to buy TV time in the largest markets in the country...and then have to decide which ones are worth it and where to move resources. The unfortunate problem with his poor showings in past primaries is the money is running out faster than its coming in and there comes a time where the law of diminishing returns kicks in.

He's not going home empty...he has delegates that he can parlay at the convention, but its late in the game now to try to think of winning a nomination. He's fought a valiant campaign but results are moving in the wrong direction. He's a very classy man and hope he's included in the upcoming campaign and a subsequent Democratic administration.

14. Because he's a true Patriot
My guess... other than the obvious money issues, he sees how the current Clinton/Obama fight is tearing the Democratic Party apart. He knows now he can't win, & also knows that the Dems must win against any Repub. His dropping out gives us a chance to pick a nominee sooner & rally around our candidate. Otherwise we lose the White House in November.

16. Maybe it's Florida, but its McCain winning Florida
He may feel McCain is wrapping up the GOP nom and that Obama will have a better chance to beat him.

17. I don't think HE was sick of the "kingmaker" talk, but some other power broker WAS!
Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 09:54 AM by calipendence
And they saw that he was their big obstacle to getting their corporatist put in as the nominee and found some way (which we probably will never know of the details) to convince Edwards to pull out. Perhaps someone came by and said some veiled threat like "You know John, why your wife is sick? That should have told you something then. Think about how that might be worse down the road. Pull out now!" Of course we'll never know the details of what really happened.
