The problem with hero worship
Many of us Edwards supporters are upset today to find John Edwards is dropping out of the race. Over and over again he said he was in it to the convention.

I like Edwards very much and supported him wholeheartedly BUT I always knew he would have to reassess his campaign run if things continued as they were.

People...I'm sorry he's dropping out. I'm disappointed, too, but hero worship is really unrealistic....especially with politicians.

Support your candidate with your eyes open. Understand that while intentions made me good reality often overtakes intentions. Be realistic about what your candidate can really accomplish and don't credit him with hero status.

1. I don't have heros, none that are alive, anyways, I have people I tolerate, and those I don't...
Kucinich and Edwards were "tolerable", the other two I can barely stand as it is. This fucking sucks.

2. Oh bull - my heroes aren't fucking politicians.
I supported Edwards because he was the only candidate I felt, and still feel, is electable. President McCain, here we come...

8. I didn't say yours are....
Edwards is a valiant fighter and I'm sad he's dropping out, but I'm not surprised.

5. I'm not slamming Edwards in any way.....
He gave it all he had and I don't think people should be angry that he felt he couldn't go further.

15. No you're just making us out too be shallow, ie the "hero" worship. That might apply to Obama
supporters though. Why don't you try that on them? And I am not angry with John, not in the least. My anger is directed elsewhere.

4. I did admire Clark - still do - and the drop out day - still hurts.

But I agree with you, political decisions, voting - should be made rationally, after careful deliberation.
When he endorsed Hillary, some months ago - I didn't follow.(found my way eventually for different reasons)

9. If you think there isn't a lot of hero worship going on
you haven't been reading the board.

10. I had the same thoughts when I heard this on NPR this morning.
I was instantly disheartened and, to be honest, I also felt instantly betrayed. Nonetheless, I will not find myself inspired by words of hope or bipartisanship. I think we need to continue the fight. Therefore, with my eyes wide open, I am throwing my full support behind Hillary Rodham Clinton.

thanks for getting it. They are setting themselves up for a MIGHTY fall if he does something to disappoint them.

Frankly, they worry me.

13. I have no illusions, thank you very much
and frankly I've seen just as much hero worship directed to JE, if not more.

16. Oh, gotcha.
Hero worship always ends in disappointment. I've been watching the hypnotization happening and it really disturbs me. When one allows a hero, an imagined, near-perfect savior type, then ugly warts are overlooked. Heroes always fall, whether they are sincere, or propped up by the aristocracy.

A true hero will fall for the cause of others' suffering.

A phony hero will fall from grace in flames.

18. "Hero worship" isn't the point ... supporting the idea behind democracy is
That is, supporting the candidate you feel will be best for the job. Enthusiasm is ideally part of that
whole process. It's not "hero worship" at all. I think everyone on this board is very realistic about ALL
the candidates.

19. The real problem isn't "hero worship", it's trying to find a "progressive champion"!
Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 11:34 AM by calipendence
I first thought Feingold would be it. Then I was hoping for Gore. Then it was Edwards (with some thoughts towards Kucinich)! Now we are without anyone to look at, unless Obama finds it in his own heart to do what Edwards has been doing, which I doubt his corporate masters will let him do substantively.

Our Democracy has been taken away from us. Progressive agenda isn't allowed any more. Corporations are making sure of that!
