Hillary On Edwards: I'm Reaching Out To His Supporters
Hillary On Edwards: I'm Reaching Out To His Supporters
By Greg Sargent - January 30, 2008, 11:43AM
On a local news station in Birmingham, Alabama, Hillary just commented on John Edwards' departure from the presidential race. She stressed that she's the candidate to carry on Edwards' war on poverty and made it clear that she will be reaching out aggressively to win over his supporters.

Here's a transcript, which was sent our way by her campaign:

HRC: Well Senator Edwards is a friend of mine, he was a colleague in the senate and I have the highest regard for him, and I’m really admiring of what he has done to make sure that poverty was on the agenda here in America. He encouraged all of us in his passion and advocacy and I hope he will continue that work because it is really important that we stay focused on what we’re going to do to help people.

29. Mostly I agree - But there is a But ...
The way the OP covers this can give a misleading impression. Hilary was being interviewed live and this was breaking news. Her initial comment said nothing about seeking the support of people who supported Edwards. Her comments were in praise of John Edwards and they acknowledged the importance of the issues Edwards has been fighting for. The latter is EXACTLY what John Edwards requested of her during the personal phone call they had when he told her he was withdrawing.

Then she was asked this question point blank:

"ANCHOR: Senator, there is no indication right now that he would endorse a candidate, would you hope and expect that his supporters would back you now and your candidacy?"

Yes Hillary could have ducked that question and maybe it would have been more respectful had she done so, but she gave a direct honest answer to a direct question asked of her. I can't knock her too much for that.

12. Wait for what?
The process does not stand still, there are even less days and hours till the next primary. Did somebody die? No a good man dropped out and others will try to pick up his supporters. It is the circle of political life.

22. I am sorry but politics is not for the
the queasy i guess. No one died, his wife seems no worse or better as told by the campaign. A good man dropped out, onward. I have waited long enough for ANY democrat to take over and the repugs are DAMN sure not waiting around and contemplating the sorrow of losing Edwards. Right now they are revising tactics to win against 2 instead of 3 potential candidates.

39. HRC's statement was NOT tacky because it was NOT a statement, but an answer.
According to the link, HRC was on a local TV station when she said these words. Most likley, she was doing a TV interview when the news about JE came in, so the local newsguy asked her about it. She merely answered his question. She was not making an official statement (although this answer became one, by default)

She was NOT trying to steal Edwards's thunder nor to pander to his supoorters. She was answering a damned question!

Boy, I would sure hate to have some of you guys on my jury.

33. See Post #29 above
Hillary's comments without prodding from the interviewer were exactly the type of response any of us realistically could have wanted her to give. Then the interviewer asked this question point blank:

"ANCHOR: Senator, there is no indication right now that he would endorse a candidate, would you hope and expect that his supporters would back you now and your candidacy?"

She gave an honest answer to the question asked her. It really is only fair to at least read what she actually said in context and in sequence. The media often leaves out the questions that our candidates are asked and then hype the answer as an inappropriate topic for them to addresse. We should be careful not to be guilty of the same.

86. I thought Edwards kicked ass, but I chose not to pick a candidate in the primary
season because I know how you feel. I couldn't take it if I'd supported a candidate and they dropped out. I was a Clark supporter in 2k4 and I vowed never to support anyone but the nominee again. That way my heart won't get crushed.

Yes there are assholes out there. This is DU. Assholes don't take a break from DU, only the sane folk take breaks from this cesspool.

That's why I'm sayin take a break. I've done it like 4 times in 2k7 for months @ a time. The breaks did me good.

48. "Senator... would you hope and expect that his supporters would back you now and your candidacy?"
That was the direct question asked of Hillary Clinton. People on this thread are getting upset over her answering that direct question.

Hillary Clinton did not issue, as far as I know anyway, any Press Release on her own asking Edwards supporters to now back her. We keep pouncing on our candidates for speaking about things that they shouldn't speak about when it is the media that keeps injecting those subjects into the public discussion in the first place. We don't like it when our candidates evade direct questions and it seems like we don't like it when they answer them either.

If we don't like the questions that they are being asked, maybe we should express that to the media.

Save your bridge building, Toonces. I'm now an Obama supporter all the way.

60. The HRC supporters have been mostly respectful of Edwards supporters, not the Obama ones
and its one reason I move my support from Edwards to Clinton, not the only one but just one of the reasons.

65. I don't chose candidates based on DU "niceness."
But if you do then...eh, we deserve the failed State we live in, I guess.

68. er...no?
Not sure what was "testy" about anything. Just stating an opinion.

I just changed to obama today, so I haven't had time to be all cantankerous and bitter or whatever.

70. Maybe you should read what I typed again..Why do people post so fast without reading?
Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 01:29 PM by jzodda
Did I say it was my only reason?? No I did not, but its one of them. If it was my only reason I would be a fool. Besides I love HRC and Obama. I loved Edwards too. I wish more of you guys loved all of them.

82. I read what you wrote. The first time. Having that be "one of your reasons" boggles my mind.
Having it be any one of your reasons is sort of incredible. :eyes:

I can't imagine looking at the candidates and, at any level saying, "...and another reason I throw my support to him/her is because gosh, supporters at DU were real friendly."

72. I voted for Edwards caucus of 2004, and am supporting Hillary in 2008
I believe Hillary will give John Edwards a position where he can make a difference with poverty in America... I do not think he should be VP. I think there are cabinet posts where he can do more good and focus on what he is passionate about... remember... he is not defeated...

73. Right-just like she reached out to "extend her hand in friendship" to Obama.
I don't believe a WORD she says.
