Jews favor Hillary. Clinton 58% Obama 26% Edwards 13% (Florida results)
Published: 01/30/2008

Jews voted overwhelmingly for U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in Florida's Democratic primary.

MSNBC exit polls Tuesday showed Jewish Democrats voting 58 percent for Clinton (D-N.Y.), 26 percent for Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and 13 percent for the former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards.

Fifty-eight percent of Jewish Democrats voted for Clinton, more than double Barack Obama's 26 percent. John Edwards, who is expected to withdraw from the race on Wednesday, won 13 percent.

Among the overall white population, the numbers for Clinton and Obama were slightly lower than they were among the Jews, at 53 and 23 percent, respectively. Edwards picked up the balance, winning 20 percent of the overall white vote.

Jews comprised 3 percent of the Republican electorate in Florida, according to the MSNBC exit polls, making it impossible to determine their specific votes.

8. Just not nearly as high in other states
as they voted in Florida. If Hillary expects the same type of older vote turnout in other states as she did in Florida, she'll be dissapointed.

10. I'm aware of that.
But still, a campaign-less election in Florida does not constitute a good sampling of Jewish voters.

19. I'd suspect that religious Jews and those who support a continued special relationship
between the US and Israel favor her, too. The secular Jews and those who don't have that emotional "connection" with the "Jewish state" break towards the other choices. There may be some division along age lines, but that's not the whole story. I suspect the Hasidim, young and old, will vote Clinton.

Clinton's foreign policy views are certainly shaped to at least some extent by her constituents. And as we know, ten percent of voters in NY are Jewish--it's the largest diaspora locale in the US.

5. That vote essentially mirrors the larger Florida population.
Jews don't generally vote as a bloc, with a few notably exceptions.

28. You're welcome...
It's a great article and I am shocked that Jeremiah Wright would praise Farrakhan as recently as last December.

14. Hillary has made pandering to her large Jewish constituency a key element in her Senate bids
Why would you expect her to lose in that demographic now?

20. Yeah, instead of reaching out to Jews Clinton could pander to homophobes like McClurkin...
but Obama's got the anti~gay vote all sewed up.

It could also be that Jews have seen that Obama is tied to the Jeremiah Wright/Farrakhan anti~semites?

24. It's "pandering" to take into account ten percent of your state's population???
What's the threshhold before it stops being "pandering" and suddenly becomes "being responsive to constituent concerns?" Twelve percent? Fifteen? Twenty?

Or does it only count if we're talking race, and not a rather distinctive faith group with ethnic elements that generally votes Democratic? It's 'OK' to consider the views of hispanic or black or native American constituents, but it's 'pandering' if you're talking about Jews?

That was a rather offensive comment, even if you don't realize it.

16. So now it's Hillary's fault because she appeals to older Jews.
Why on earth do people always manage to bring these divisive issues to the discussion? Is it now going to be all about age, religion, ethnicity? Or about what matters most to all these groups: who can best speak for them and deliver what is needed.
