Proof positive that DU does not represent the real world.
Now I know most of us are well aware that we are different here, infinitely more engaged, hyperpartisan and for the most part rude as can be ;-)

But over and over in the months leading up to actual voting, I've heard a popular refrain from people who disliked Hillary here on DU. "No one I know likes her or will vote for her".

This was repeated dozens of times with quite a few DUers chiming in.

Well we're 6 elections in and some 1.5M Democrats have already voted for Hillary Clinton.

So next time someone says to you that no one they know likes or will vote for your candidate.

Just roll your eyes.

1. Sometimes I feel lonely on this forum as a Clinton supporter, but not once I get in my car...
My entire neighborhood is lined with HIllary signs. Have yet to see on Obama or McCain sign around here.

14. I still consider myself an Edwards guy through and through, but must admit
I see Hillary signs all over Iowa, including several in places that might be surprising such as farms deep into rural parts of the state, upscale neighborhoods...places you'd expect to be dominated by Republicans.

What is the nature of reality?

:)

Just playing. I now know five people who like her. One is my 10 year old daughter and she is pissed that I'm not voting for her.

Sorry if you believe we donlt live in the real world, but in my job and personal life I do deal with peopel from a variety of walks of life. yes I know some enthusiastic supporters of her, but most eitehr don;t like her or are extremely lukewarm.

10. Why would anyone be holding their nose in a primary?
there are other choices, and it's not for the office. I suppose it's vaguely possible some people voted reluctantly for Hillary as being "the only one who can stop Obama" but geez how likely is that?

28. The Clinton? Great term.
Perhaps I mispoke, in terms of voting in the primaries with their noses held.

A better way to put it was that they have an "If you can;t beat 'em, join 'em because we have to beat the GOP" attitude.

12. I find her very polarizing, even among Dems
You either love her or you hate her. There's very little in between with the Clintons.

If she's the nominee, she will have to find a way to overcome that.

Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 05:32 PM by MonkeyFunk
that's not a quality that loses elections. George W. Bush was/is very polarizing. Ronald Reagan was very polarizing. Bill Clinton was very polarizing by '96.

And in our modern world, EVERY candidate will be polarizing. The game has gotten so tough, the attacks so hard, that by the time the election comes around, roughly 50% of the voters will hate the other candidate.

35. I see it as an asset in many ways
Hillary is probably the most-vetted candidate in the last 40 years. She's been a public figure for 16+ years, and everybody seems to have already formed an opinion about her.

I think she's already fought the toughest battles of her career. President will seem like a walk in the park by comparison.

45. Re: "everybody seems to have already formed an opinion about her"
Therein lies the rub. She'll have a lot of work to do to bring voters over, given her high negative numbers (which are less malleable than candidates with less name recognition).

43. And I always took the context of the "wouldn't vote for her" comments ....
... to be in speaking with non-Democratic voters. I've never had a doubt that Hillary could get the Democratic nomination. The issue is whether she can pull enough Independent and Republican voters in to win the general election.

11. I had this discussion with my son today. I whined to him that JE dropped out of the race today
and he asked me who I was going to support? I told him it would be Hillary. Son~~~rolls eyes~~~~ and says, "Mom, everyone I know HATES Hillary! You should support Obama!" Me...."And who is this everyone you know that hates Hillary?" Son..."My friends." They're all 14 years old. "14 years old and they all hate Hillary?" I asked him why his friend's hated Hillary and, of course, he didn't know. I told him the next time one of his buddies chimes in on Hillary, ask them why they hate her...I'd LOVE to know what the answer is.

People hate her because they listen to Rush, Hannity and watch FAUX NEWS.

But there are alot of angry progressives like myself who aren't going to be suckered into voting for more corporate dems. Hillary is just going to be the Pelosi of the executive branch. I don't know where Obama stands because his website looks so tempting but his speeches are pure fluff. Also, he speaks of working with repukes and I just can't take any more of that DLC BS.

In 2009, I want to see Dems play some old time hockey, not bi-partisanship. This is my idea of bi-partisanship with the people who have hurt this nation so badly.

26. Probably, but DU really doesn't represent the real world. Most people know a fraction
of what we know. They get their biased news from FAUX, Rush, Hannity, O'LIELLY, Tweety, Blitzer and their local newspaper. They really have no clue what's REALLY going on. Obama's popular? OKAY then! I'll vote for him!

Thus since they are unaware, they fall for hype.

Yes, Hillary and Bill will win the election. But it will not be a sweet victory.

25. I'll roll my eyes if they say that that many MORE INFORMED voters picked Clinton!
If you look at forums of voters that reach beyond what the MSM spoonfeeds them, whether is here on DU, or Thom Hartman's show, etc. they tend to pick John Edwards in droves. That's because they understand what the corporate media doesn't want us to know about corporate power working against our interests in so many instances. To throw up some big volume of votes for Hillary that have been mass marketed to without adequate information being given to them is really pretty useless.

My wife and I feel that she should have divorced Bill years ago. I'm not going to specifically judge her on that, its not all her fault. The last two years of Bill's tenure was all monica all the time and ooh what about the children moments. I didn't really enjoy that political landscape. Will he be able to keep it in his pants or at least not get caught?

Mind you I think bill did alot good, and will vote for Hill if need be.

progressive, or whatever term you use, political party in the United States. Such an entity doesn't exist in this nation, we have the Dems, who are Center-Right, and the Repukes, who are Far-Right. I'm not surprised that so many people who are Democrats support either Hillary or Obama.
