Goal of uniting Americans may be a bad idea or just impossible.
Obama's campaign is appealing because it's better that we be united, right?

But just consider how "helpful" those on the right could be in solving our nation's problems. "More tax cuts," they'd say. The problem in America today is the problems that the poor and Middle Class are having. So wouldn't they be the ones most capable of suggesting ways to improve the situation? Besides, the leader of the right, president* bush, says that everything is fine. And it is, for them. They can't and won't help our country.

I'm not saying that we should be like the Republicans were in 1995 when they took over congress. Unity was a dirty word to them. Those religious zealots marched in and said, "We are better than you, we know what's right, get out of our way." Now that they've been exposed as perverts and pedophiles and our country is on the brink, we see that they were dead wrong about everything.

On the other hand, now that America is not a very industrious nation, we are all fighting for a slice of the same pie--we are not creating wealth. In fact, when Republicans are doing well, working Americans are doing quite poorly. This should not surprise Democrats because in 2001 Paul Krugman told us that this is the way things were going to be. Hopefully, Democrats will help American workers because we are in trouble. Maybe it won't be as bad for Republicans as it has been for us. That is as far as unity should go for Democrats. The best case is if America became more industrious.

Good progressives might consider this to be unfair, but consider how "mad" Repulicans are. In the 70s, Republican Eddie Chiles had a series of radio commercials telling us how mad he was. He was mad because the government told him not to pollute our air or to make sure his company was safe for workers and didn't make dangerous products. Has anyone noticed a change in the Republicans following the bush presidency*? They're still mad despite totally controlling the government for 4 years and mostly controlling it for 28 years. Their government even went beyond what the constitution allows! They will always be mad. Wait till you see how mad they get if the Dems retain congress and win the presidency. We'll try to convince them to unite for the good of America, but don't count on it.

Unity? It's a great gimmick for getting elected. To govern, don't put much stock in it. Don't learn the hard way, that's just the way it WILL be. Hopefully Obama or Hillary will take care of America first and then try to unite us. Forty years after the Great Depression, I saw a Republican wearing a Wendell Willkie for president button. They are so blinded by ideology that they don't know what's good for themselves. Accepting idiocy from the right is not a luxury they or we can afford.
