"Question - would this be considered our first real quarter of fundraising? (I read that somewhere and want to verify it)"

Yup.

Here's a related thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=40782

And a source:

http://www.salon.com/news/wire/2003/12/29/dean_clark/index.html

Enjoy!

:bounce:

"Dec. 29, 2003 | WASHINGTON (AP) -- Aided by aggressive Internet campaigns, Democratic presidential candidates Howard Dean and Wesley Clark raised the most money in the final quarter of 2003, according to preliminary estimates.
...
Clark, the retired Army general who entered the race in September, will have raised between $10 million and $12 million in the fourth quarter, for a total of almost $15 million since becoming a candidate.

Clark will get an additional bump after the New Year with an estimated $3.7 million worth of federal matching money, while Dean has declined public funds. All the other candidates, except Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, will also receive federal matching funds after Jan. 1.

By raising almost as much money as Dean in the third quarter and accepting federal matching funds, Clark should be financially competitive with Dean in the near term."

Wes is an incredible gift to the Democratic party. He'll make the Republicans play defense for the first time in their lives on national security and patriotism and he's been an incredibly quick study on domestic issues. And his heart is unquestionably in the right place. What he needs more than anything from us is money, folks. He's been paying us back with a kick-ass performance on the campaign trail. He's working his tail off, not taking any shit from the media and keeping the rhetorical pressure up on BushCo. Let's keep up the good work.

I just made my second donation to Clark tonight. I have donated time and energy in the past, but this is first time I have been motivated to open my wallet for a candidate. It is a wonderful thing to see the Democrats (as a whole) raising enough to actually compete with the pub money machine.

but I keep hearing that his numbers will be around $15 million once the matching funds come in after the first of the year. That would be awesome, but even if he ends up at 10 million, that is an amazing total for his first complete quarter of fundraising!

My new favorite quote. From todays Native American Times endorsement:

http://www.nativetimes.com/index.asp?action=displayarticle&article_id=3445
"If words are a person’s bond and actions even more telling, then Clark is the clear choice from a Native and non-Native American perspective. If our country truly seeks peace, it will need a proven peacemaker."

55. I really have no idea, Bobby
You always see contributions being posted on the blog but the Clark campaign doesn't run as many "bat-like" events as the Dean campaign does so it's pretty hard to tell. I'm aware of at least $1.7 in online events that I've sort of tracked since Halloween but the actual number is just a guess.

Anybody?

64. Important note from General Clark's website.
"Wednesday is the last day of the first primary - the fundraising primary. December 31 is the deadline to contribute to the Clark campaign in this quarter. Many pundits look at these year-end fundraising numbers as the first way to see how much support Wes Clark has. These will be the last fundraising numbers that will be public before the crucial early-state primaries."

I may have to give again.

slinging one-liners with no facts or evidence to back up what you're saying etc. Just the usual BS. Bringing nothing to the table.

I try to bring my own experience in to this and you get upset! How many Generals have you met? Do you understand the ego and politics that comes with making the rank of General? Of the Generals I worked with, it was easy to spot the good ones and the bad ones.

I've met probably over 100 generals in all service branches. I worked personally in the offices of quite a few Air Force flag officers, including 1 4-Star: Gen. Charles Gabriel (USAF), 2 3-stars: Lt Gen Marcus Anderson, Lt Gen Kenneth Peek, and 2 2-stars: Maj Gen Norman Campbell, Maj Gen Pat Smothermon.

I'd say that I have a bit of experience with their "type" -- whatever that means.

75. Why? Because
You come in as a new member and the only things you have to say are a few unsubstantiated cheap shots at ONE of the candidates? It doesn't bring you any good will. Most of us are open to honest criticism but an honest critique usually includes some INFORMATION to support a slam. Not a drive-by one-liner.

Wes Clark. He will make an extraordinary American President.

69. Dec 31 is the deadline for quarter! It's important for PR/media...
(And we'll just let the mods deal with other things going on...)

92. My last donation of the year
$25 more. A pricey Christmas, so I can't give more now.

This is the first time in my life I've donated to a campaign. And if Clark hadn't entered, I almost certainly wouldn't have donated until the primaries were over. Dean is fine, but he wasn't the candidate for me. Kerry is great, but his campaign was too weak to prop up with my wages (such as they are).

I'm down $415 total for the year, and Clark04 is $415 richer.

And whoever wins, I regret not a penny.

99. It is important to keep those checks coming, even though you may
feel if Clark is not nominated, your money was wasted.
With Dean's overwhelming lead so far which does not show any signs of tapering off, we all realistic folks know Dean will easily win the nomination.

Yes, your Clark dollars would be better spent on Dean to help defeat the real opponent, Bush*co. But, look at it this way...you are definately helping the unemployment numbers stay lower by employing all those nice people in Clark campaign.

So, all is not lost for Clark supporters. No need to run for Xanax or Prozac just yet.

It was a positive pro-Clark thread with good rapport among various candidates' supporters, and you had to toss in some obnoxious baloney.

A sincere question: what possesed you to do it? At what point did you say--"Aw, look how purty, these naive Clark supporters. Let me toss in a stinkbomb and see what happens."

105. It didn't. I just gave Clark's campaign 50 bucks after seeing your post.
Here's the e-mail I just got:

"Thank you very much for your generous contribution of $50.00 to the
Clark for President campaign. Your financial support will help Wes Clark
spread his vision for New American Patriotism across the country and
get our nation back on track.

We need a change in leadership in America. With your continued
support, Wes Clark will help to revitalize our economy and make our nation
safer and stronger by defeating George W. Bush next November.

If you haven't already, I encourage you to sign up as a Clark Recruiter
(http://recruiters.clark04.com/) so you can encourage your friends,
family, and associates to contribute to the Clark campaign while being
recognized for your efforts.

Again, thank you for your contribution to Clark for President. We
appreciate your generosity and support."

Sincerely,
Eli Segal
Chairman
Clark for President, Inc

I know that makes you feel better.
