SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — With Democrat John Edwards now out of presidential contention, state Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, officially endorsed U.S. Sen. Barack Obama on Thursday.
Yee made his announcement at the Obama for America headquarters in South City amid cheers and yelps of support from volunteers.
"I supported Edwards from the beginning," he said. "This (Obama) candidacy feels comfortable to me. Barack Obama understands that we can no longer go into any country and say, 'We will impose what we think is right for you.'"
Yee's support is expected to provide a significant boost to the Obama campaign, since Asian Americans make up14 percent of California's population, said Yee spokesman Adam Keigwin.
The state senator said he was impressed with Obama's commitment to providing a universal health care plan that provides high-quality and affordable coverage to all Americans.
