That healthcare mailer

The Clinton campaign convened a conference call with health policy experts to denounce Obama's new mailer (.pdf), which attacks Clintons plan for "forcing" Americans to sign up for insurance, and which features a couple at a kitchen table that recalls, for some, the famous insurance-industry financed "Harry and Louise" ads against the original Clinton plan.

"I am personally outraged at the picture used in this mailing," said Len Nichols of the New America foundation, a leading supporter of mandatory insurance, who called it a "Harry and Louise evocation."

"It is as outrageous as having Nazis march through Skokie, Illinois," Nichols said. "I just find it disgusting that this kind of imagery is being used to attack the only way to get to universal coverage."

1. Stupid analogy, but recalling "Harry and Louise" is pretty stupid too.
That campaign was full of lies.

Though Obama is using right wing disinfo to attack Hillary's healtcare plan, it certainly does not rise to the Nazis trying to march thru Skokie

26. How did you come up with that?
Mandated universal insurance means mandated universal insurance. That means EVERYONE would be forced to have health insurance. What did she say that does not fit with that?

11. "as outrageous as having Nazis march through Skokie, Illinois,"
What a bizarre and unreasonable thing said by the Hillary rep.

I looked at it, and it's innocuous. The notion of having John and Joan Q. Public in such a political flyer is as old and standard as anything in politics. To behave as if it this flyer relates in any way to something the insurance industry did 15 years ago is really a reach. Besides, Hillary is "their girl" this time around. She is promoting THEIR favored solution - mandatory insurance.

Hillary has switched sides on this issue since 1993. She's promoting the insurance industry's idea for subverting national heath care so that it gets run by insurance companies, doctors and hospitals.

13. There Goes Your Moral High Ground
making a Nazi comparison like that.

The mail piece may well have been reprehensible, but for Nichols to make a comment like that is just plain wrong. I'm glad the Clinton campaign distanced themselves from it.

This is mild, and it's really mild when compared to what the Republicans will do.

And every couple sitting at a kitchen table cannot be said to be a comparison to Harry & Louise.

UPDATE: At the end of the call, Clinton aide Howard Wolfson disavowed the Nazi reference, saying the campaign didn't think it was appropriate, though he acknowledged the passions the issue stirs.

30. OMFG! What a bizarre and hopelessly outdated analogy!
I wrote a paper for a college polisci class at the Universiy of Illinois in 1965(!) analyzing a legal case based on the Nazi march in Skokie. It was a pretty topical assignment at the time but more than 40 years later????? Are they expecting this nonsensical comparison to appeal to Jewish Dems? I hope not, because (as a Jewish Dem myself) it strikes me as damned insulting to the many holocaust survivors who lived in Skokie so long ago when George Lincoln Rockwell and his American Nazi Party marched in their town. Other than the older Jews for whom the Nazi march comparison might ring a bell (though not a positive one)I can't think of any group to whom this would have any resonance at all. It's very, very strange.
