Regarding Poverty (I'm kinda pissed off.)
Edited on Fri Feb-01-08 03:27 PM by redqueen
Both candidates mentioned the word "poverty" ONCE... ONE TIME... at the start of the debate last night... while talking about John!

:banghead:

Please... anyone who watched it... please tell me that if I just use a different search term, I'll find an instance of them discussing it...

1. Cross-over means "we" must work with people who assume Poverty is your Fault. nt

3.  /comfort

You're right honey, they only mentioned it once when they were trying to get John's Endorsement.

It's amazing isn't it, how they tried to drum him out...yet now want his support?

4. What do you expect?
They both had very limited segments of time, and had to condense both thoughts and words as effectively as possible to answer the debate questions.

I'd suggest you look up their respective policy statements on the subject, as well as search speeches where they didn't have the constraints of the debate format.

5. Statements are nice and all. But these are the voiceless... the forgotten...
right here in our own oh-so-prosperous nation.

The issue deserves more than a passing mention at the start.

7. I'm sorry they couldn't structure this debate to suit you.
Both have done wonderful work for the voiceless and the forgotten in our oh-so-prosperous nation and have spoken about it in other venues.

11. OMG!!!!! Way to fuck the poor folk!
Then you wonder why I said I won't vote for either?

With your hostility?

15. Hostility?
Because a particular subject doesn't get the emphasis you want in each and every venue does not mean that the candidate has not given it full weight. My pointing that out and being impatient with critics is not "hostility."

There are plenty of words and actions from these two candidates that address the issues of poverty in our country. Start _here_ and _here_, then tell me how they "fuck the poor folk."

26. Yes, all we poor folk do is demand and whine and complain.
IN between the dying, of course.

Grow a heart.

6. I so noticed that too.
No candidate other than Edwards has addressed the problems of this silent demographic, who really have no say in their destiny. This is especially true of the homeless who don't have an address to register in to vote, nor money to donate to candidates. So it seems the present two candidates don't like acknowledge that this problem exists. As far as the Republican candidates are concerned, all they have to do is blame the victim for their personal anguish and move on.

12. In all fairness, Redqueen, the issue is addressed in the health care
proposals of each candidate and in their talk about unfair taxation.

But also, in fairness, I see what you mean. The candidates don't talk about the poor because they think they won't be seen by the "middle class" as fair to them. As the saying goes, however, the proof of the pudding will be in the eating and we'll see how this plays out in programs designed to help the poor and middle class. IMHO, ANY Dem is better than ANY Repub.

But I don't know that I believe that they don't talk about it because the electorate is turned off by it.

If that's true... Christ Almighty... we're a nation controlled by spoiled fucking ignorant-ass greedy selfish brats. :puke:

23. Oh if I only had a dollar for every middle class whiner who has pissed and moaned
about how the poor have so much assistance and they, the poor dears, don't get in on the deal. I even saw a column about this recently: a woman wrote that she has two jobs and can't afford health care but she's not poor. Her daughter tells her that so and so in her class at college has a scholarship based on need, and her family has sect. 8 housing, food stamps, Medicaid and even free diapers from our local Diaper Bank!

Not ONE mention about how the tax breaks for the wealthiest are ripping them off, oh no! Just "the poor get everything free" routine! What do you bet that woman is voting Republican?

13. that is an issue that set Edwards apart.
It is not a big priority now I guess. Sad.

I hope Clinton offers him a prominent role. Or Obama if he wins, for that matter.

25. OR, how's this... YOU could DEMAND that your candidate get with the poverty program!
What a concept, eh?

Start demanding what you want of your candidate, instead of wishing.
