Responding to Recession
by Paul Krugman

<snip>
Since this is an election year, the debate over how to stimulate the economy is inevitably tied up with politics. And here’s a modest suggestion for political reporters. Instead of trying to divine the candidates’ characters by scrutinizing their tone of voice and facial expressions, why not pay attention to what they say about economic policy?
In fact, recent statements by the candidates and their surrogates about the economy are quite revealing.
<snip>
On the Democratic side, John Edwards, although never the front-runner, has been driving his party’s policy agenda. He’s done it again on economic stimulus: last month, before the economic consensus turned as negative as it now has, he proposed a stimulus package including aid to unemployed workers, aid to cash-strapped state and local governments, public investment in alternative energy, and other measures.
Last week Hillary Clinton offered a broadly similar but somewhat larger proposal. (It also includes aid to families having trouble paying heating bills, which seems like a clever way to put cash in the hands of people likely to spend it.) The Edwards and Clinton proposals both contain provisions for bigger stimulus if the economy worsens.
And you have to say that Mrs. Clinton seems comfortable with and knowledgeable about economic policy. I’m sure the Hillary-haters will find some reason that’s a bad thing, but there’s something to be said for presidents who know what they’re talking about.
The Obama campaign’s initial response to the latest wave of bad economic news was, I’m sorry to say, disreputable: Mr. Obama’s top economic adviser claimed that the long-term tax-cut plan the candidate announced months ago is just what we need to keep the slump from “morphing into a drastic decline in consumer spending.” Hmm: claiming that the candidate is all-seeing, and that a tax cut originally proposed for other reasons is also a recession-fighting measure — doesn’t that sound familiar?
Anyway, on Sunday Mr. Obama came out with a real stimulus plan. As was the case with his health care plan, which fell short of universal coverage, his stimulus proposal is similar to those of the other Democratic candidates, but tilted to the right.
For example, the Obama plan appears to contain none of the alternative energy initiatives that are in both the Edwards and Clinton proposals, and emphasizes across-the-board tax cuts over both aid to the hardest-hit families and help for state and local governments. I know that Mr. Obama’s supporters hate to hear this, but he really is less progressive than his rivals on matters of domestic policy.
In short, the stimulus debate offers a pretty good portrait of the men and woman who would be president. And I haven’t said a word about their hairstyles.

126. Wrong. That isn't what he is talking about:
This nomination campaign is about much more than the candidates. It about a major split within the Democratic party. The candidates are reflecting that split. Here are three of the major "issues" dividing Democrats.

First, triangulation: moving to the right -- adopting right-wing positions -- to get more votes. Bill Clinton did it and Hillary believes in it. It is what she means by "bipartisanship." Obama means the opposite by "bipartisanship." To Obama, it is a recognition that central progressive moral principles are fundamental American principles. For him, bipartisanship means finding people who call themselves "conservatives" or "independents," but who share those central American values with progressives. Obama thus doesn't have to surrender or dilute his principles for the sake of "bipartisanship."

The second is incrementalism: Hillary believes in getting lots of small carefully crafted policies through, one at a time, step by small step, real but almost unnoticed. Obama believes in bold moves and the building of a movement in which the bold moves are demanded by the people and celebrated when they happen. This is the reason why Hillary talks about "I," I," "I" (the crafter of the policy) and Obama talks about "you" and "we" (the people who demand it and who jointly carry it out).

The third is interest group politics: Hillary looks at politics through interests and interest groups, seeking policies that satisfy the interests of such groups. Obama's thinking emphasizes empathy over interest groups. He also sees empathy as central to the very idea of America. The result is a positive politics grounded in empathy and caring that is also patriotic and uplifting.

For a great many Democrats, these are the real issues. These real differences between the candidates reflect real differences within the party. Whoever gets the nomination, these differences will remain.

145. How does Lakoff deduce that Obama is striving for a different kind of "bipartisanship" over Clinton?
I'd really like to see his criteria for this. I am still struck by too many uncomfortable similarities between the two to find any nuances between their respective positions. (Both have continued funding for Iraq, and both voted AGAINST redeployment in 2006...) While I may agree that Obama is the "lesser of the two evils", I'm not voting for either in the primary. I wonder if Lakoff's assessment might change if Edwards was still in the equation?

9. To the older folks here: What do you think of this? Does it inspire you or turn you off?
I've read so many older folks here criticizing young people for their support of Obama. I know a video like this will speak to a lot of young people, but I'm interested in how the older generation sees it.

Leaders inspire us to work harder for the things we believe in; yet, I am so jaded that I am almost afraid to believe in other Americans and to hope for a better tomorrow.

I want to believe in a more united United States of America and this video reminds me that I am not alone by any means.

I have not idea who any of these stars are other than Scarlet . I have to say it did not inspire me , it's just a bunch of snap shots with no energy and a repetitive yes we can and a shot sign of the word hope .

If this is inspirational it was lost on me , what do i know , I guess you have to be young , real young to see what i don't see .

64. were you involved in the 60's?
Weren't you outraged that your friends died for foolishness? Did you protest? Did you scream? Did you yell? I worked with Eugene McCarthy's campaign. I was out there and I never gave up hope. The dreams of the 60's died when the 'turn on, tune in, drop out' crowd decided that it was more comfortable to join corporate American and shut down. I can only hope that the younger fold that Obama is inspiring has more stamina and dedication than several of those in my generation did.

71.  Of course I screamed and yelled and was outraged >
I felt this was clear in my response . I was also facing being drafted . I also saw alot of fellow protestors beaten and it didn't matter what color skin they had .

I didn't support any candidate because as now I felt they were liars and they proved me right and I have no doubt they will once again .

For me the dreams of the 60's died when JFK was murdered . All the rest was an after affect once we knew something like this could happen then anything could happen .

There is quite a feeling attached to being in a spot with a draft card that is difficult to describe knowing the entire Vietnam war was a lie . I was well aware of this .

This is something most all the youth of today have not experienced and gets over looked . Have that hanging over your head and try to find hope . It was like a death sentence that could come in the form of a greetings letter .

It was a little clearer then to know who your enemies were compared to now .

The camelot image is something that the media and people invented not JFK . People will have to make their own judgement on Obama and if they want to make him into more than human then he will be thought of as this . I would not want this image placed on me ever .

edited to add: it's just a wonderful and moving video, and you mentioned it was an all star cast? so that's where my age really shows, because i don't think i could name a single performer in that video though a few faces seemed familiar.

105. Excellent use of visual and musical poetry to express a message
loud and clear at an emotional level. The serious points come through, especially in relation to the false powers at present in Washington and the warning against false hope and the assurance that this is real. As does of course the sense of vitality, of youth, and hence change.

It works for me. I'm 53. Sure you can.

25. Bitter has nothing to do with it , truth does , reality does
Trouble is no one ever sticks to anything long enough to make it become a reality . Oh sure , many are all pumped up now but once all is said and done and the hype and hope and the red carpets are rolled up and everyone goes home you wil find this is when the reality sinks in .

It's easy to get caught up in the moment , quite something else to walk the walk and keep the momentum going and make no mistake it's not the candidate that will do this , no the ball is then in the peoples hands .

39.  Tell you what , walk a few miles in my shoes
Then come back and tell me about hope . Go back into the past a bit and look at how similar what you see as hope and inspiration is to what we thought it was in the 60's and 70's and 80's and 90's and then look at where we are now . If you feel someone else can fill you up with hope that you didn't have within yourself then dream on .

I have seen this all so many times and what you don't realize is there is a power structure controlling everything you feel and think and see and if you don't fight this and beat it back then you lose .

Every rock star and group thoughout the decades made their attempts to inspire with powerful messages of hope and we had a movement and each time it was turned into dust in the wind .

A video won't do it , if you want things to change then you have to do the hard work and learn to sacrifice and do this in greater numbers than ever before and be prepared to do this for many years to come without let up and then and only then you may make a dent in the hell on earth that you see today .

If this is bitter than to say that tells me you are not willing to face reality .

Least of all me. And I'll bet my "walk" has been as disappointing and difficult as yours. I'm not some damned kid.

But I am a believer, and I do have fire in the belly. And I'm going to hope, and I'm going to vote for Obama, because of his hard work, his sacrifice, and his leadership.

46. Don't bet on what you don't know anything about
Why don't you list Obamas sacrifice and leadership and hard work . My intent was not to boil hope out of anyone it is to say don't be delusional simply because you buy into some message of hope .

You judge me in saying your life is harder than mind when you have no idea about me at all . This is acting like a kid .

You can have all the hope you want and no one can boil it out of you , I could care less as if I would even attempt this . You imply it as though it is possible by taking the defense .

47. I'd be happy to list all these things, but you're not going to listen.
I could ask you to visit this post:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=4350490&mesg_id=4350915

And read about Obama's positions, but you won't. I could ask you to read "The Audacity of Hope" but you'll tell me you don't have to read a book to know about anything.

I don't judge you, but I defend hope and those who believe in Obama. Just because you're bitter and don't feel the way we do does not make you right, my friend.

50. Your entire post here is judging me
To call me bitter is also a judgement . I have read many books on many subjects . Not Obama's . I have read the post you refered to here already as with many other posts on Obama as well as his info on his site and his history and I have more questions than answers .

I'll tell you exactly what bothers me about Obama , it's not Obama , it's the hype that the people who support him rave about . None of it has anything to do with Obama but with an image people have projected .

Why not ask his supporters rather than me to read his book and seek out his history .

What I see most of with reguard to Obama posts are scores kept of how many votes he has and how much money he has raised and what a great speaker he is and speculation of which states he will win . Now it's this video .

It does not bother anyone at all that the candidates that are willing to go against the corporations were ignored by the media for the very fact that they pose a threat to the corporations . Yet freaks like Mitt or Rudy get airtime .

52. It bothered me a great deal that Edwards was largely ignored...
... by the media. Anyone who has been around DU as long as I have can tell you what a passionate supporter and worker I was for John Edwards in 2004.

This year, I really took my time making my decision, and Obama led me to that decision. It's not hype to me, it's a movement. I wasn't convinced to vote for him because of this rush and wave of support, I was convinced by Senator Obama to choose to be led by him. The rush, the hype, the movement has only been the icing on the cake to so many of us.

You don't have to seek out his history or read any book written by him. You're free to reach your own conclusions based on whatever standard or bar you set for yourself. But it will never cease to shock me how many here are so vitriolic toward Obama and his supporters. It doesn't seem right to me that you feel everyone should live by your standard, not the ones we choose for ourselves.

59. I don't feel anyone should live by my standard
I am not anyone but another poster on a site where anyone can claim to be anything they choose and you know that's true .

I also don't want or desire to be led by anyone , no I have my own mind . I was not led by JFK , he was the spokesman for the people and there was alot of hype made up about JFK too .

Just because we don't agree does in no way affect your choice .

"It doesn't seem right" applies to everything in politics as far as I am concerned . I don't see why you are shocked that people don't like Obama or they don't find him inspiring because you do . No one likes anything shoved into their face .

I did not set the bar or the standard , Bush has , and it is set so damn low anyone looks good , that's the danger now in hype . It's like being on a desert and a drink of water and some shade makes everything much better .

Maybe we can only start to create a better reality if we look closely enough to see the beauty in this world. I'm not talking about delusion...it's there if we don't overlook it.

I don't see any other way that we can ever find the courage or energy or peace of mind to create a better reality if we don't do that. And this video was inspired.

Although it seems odd to have to do "research" for this, even if it's just Google. A candidate should be so clear, so identifiable with his/her positions that there should be no question of where he or she stands.

90. Same old same old
Obama preaches bipartisan and everyone wants to ride on Obama's bipartisan race horse. It has not worked in the past as the repugs do not want to work with Democrats, they want things their way or no way as we have seen for the past seven years. The corporations have gotten behind Obama and want him in office to keep things status quo, nothing will change. Obama needs to explain how he will change things. So far we have heard many things out of Obama but no solid plans.

As you seem to be of an inquisitive nature, I would assume you've taken time to flesh out his plans. He doesn't go into minutiea in his stump speeches, but he did a town hall meeting in N.M. yesterday, and the parts I got to watch were very informative, and the huge audience thought so as well.

109. As a musician
and part of a collective.
I've been a supporter of Edwards.

Since Edwards left, the entire collective moved to Obama. I have to believe in him. He is rallying people like nobody I've seen before. I will push for him, but it won't be hard to do since everyone I seem to encounter at the coffee shops and venues are already pulling for him.

This is in Philadelphia, it might be different with the far left in other parts of the country.

115. Brilliant! I sent it to two people...
It was inspirational. How can anyone want to go back to the politics of divisiveness that HillBillary (fairly or unfairly) will bring to the general election. I helped fight against the Rethugs when they impeached Bill (and other multiple scandals) in the 90's and this is how he repays the Democratic Party by race-baiting against one of our own? I really think Bill believes this election is about revenge against the Rethugs and the power of his C*CK. He was mad when Gore and Kerry spurned him, so he wants to have Hillary reinstate his control over the Democratic party. Its time to move on Bill, you are ruining your legacy.

131. A republican posted this response to this video...
"I am a Republican, and I intend to vote as one in the fall election, but something very unexpected happened to me when I watched this video. This touched me very deeply to the point that I don't quite know what to say right now.

Watching this made me tear up, and I don't know what to think about that. This is the fourth time I have watched this video, and I am feeling something very unexpected inside."

The only candidate that makes me feel that America can regain the position we once had, to be the moral and just leader of the World. The only candidate that might convince the World that GWB was an aberration. No, we're not perfect, but given the chance we do try.

138. Beautiful!
Man that is a moving tribute to Obama and the movement he leads. Why cant everybody see what we see? I don't know..the man moves me, I must say.

The last pol who did that for me was Bobby Kennedy in another lifetime it seems.

I so hope that Obama gets his chance to change history, I and millions more will back him up.

YES WE CAN!!!
