6. yeah
all Queers vote in one monolithic bloc and we all agree on everything.

Melissa's 'endorsement' (she simply said she's voting for him) will certainly change the way I feel about Obama's outlook on LGBT.

I see no reason to think Melissa Etheridge's opinion is more valid than my own.

13. So you're real happy with DOMA? DADT?
Hillary won't TOUCH those.

16. Actually
She plans to repeal DADT

and she plans to remove the sections of DOMA that prevent fully recognized civil unions.

18. So she says
But then, didn't Bill say he would never sign such discriminatory crap in the first place?

While the McClurkin episode was obviously regrettable, the fact remains that Obamas legislative record on LGBT issues is better than that of the Clintons.

The Clintons betrayed LGBT people the first time around. Why give them another chance?

19. Obama's LGBT record is not
any better than Hillary's --and his thinking on LGBT issues is wrong.

He doesn't actually "get it".

28. How does he "not actually get it" any less than Hillary ?
At least, as an African American, Obama knows what discrimination feels like, though for a different reason. If you want to drag out the technicalities, I suppose you could say that only a gay President would truly "get it", but as far as I know, there are no such candidates running.

I would say that someone who has experienced discrimination himself might be more motivated to end ALL discrimination.

32. Hillary "gets it"
Obama does not.

When he reaches out to people who are anti-gay, he reaches out as if the difference in outlook is only one of 'policy differences'

He offers platitudes and the concept of "giving basic rights" to the LGBT community.

"Giving them a set of basic rights would allow them to experience their relationship and live their lives in a way that doesn't cause discrimination," Obama said. "I think it is the right balance to strike in this society."

I'm sorry. But my wishing to live my life is not a "cause of discrimination', and giving equal rights to LGBT people is NOT an imbalance.

34. I think that quotation has been misinterpreted.
I always interpreted that quote as meaning "civil union" vs "marriage", because the word "marriage" means religious ceremony in many peoples' minds, and they don't want their churches performing such weddings.

His choice of words wasn't the best, but then neither was Bill Richardson's when he used the word "choice" in reference to orientation. Or Hillary's when she also said that marriage should be between a man and a woman.

Obama has also said that he would leave the issue up to the states to decide. That's a reasonable response. California most probably will legalize gay marriage, Utah most likely will not. So rather than let Utah decide for California, let each state make its own call. However, I DO believe that a legally married couple should be recognized as such in ANY state, whether marriages are done there or not. Odds are that gay couple wouldn't want to live in a homophobic state in the first place.

38. You skipped over the meat of the quote
"discriminated against"

I don't need the Government to decide how I live my life, and I certainly don't need them to limit my freedoms to "protect" me from discrimination.

23. No GLBT voters (including myself) are NOT a monolithic bloc, but on DU ...
the swarms of Obama-bashers IN THE NAME OF GLBT rights are enough to INTIMIDATE the setting into the APPEARANCE of 'consensus'.

47. I don't think anyone's suggesting that all gay people vote in one block.
I think it's basically saying that he got an endorsement from an influential gay woman, who clearly doesnt have any problems with his positions of gay rights, so maybe in the real world the whole donnie mcclurkin thing isnt such a giant deal. a stupid incident for sure, but not a dealbreaker.

9. Actually, I think the Log Cabin Republicans might be smarter than you think.
If a handful of closely related issues are especially important to you (like gay rights), and one side already largely supports you on them, it may be a more effective strategy to dilute the other side's position.

31. Yep.
Melissa has a personal grudge against the Clintons. I believe it is DOMA. She showed quite openly her dislike for Hillary in the Logo debates.

Honestly, I have spent some time with Melissa - she just isn't that politically smart. She is first and last an entertainer but she does get frustrated. She is not able to understand the need for DOMA at that point and time in order to stop the right wing march for their little constitutional amendment.

Melissa is passionate about gay marriage. By my count she would have been married at least five times by now.

42. DOMA was a step TOWARD a constitutional amendment.
Enshrining discrimination in the law.

Homophobes look to any challanges to DOMA, such as MA's acceptance of gay marriage, as proof that 'state by state' doesn't work, doesn't keep their own states safe, and INCREASES the impetus for a constitutional amendment.
