Is choosing a sitting senator for VP a good idea?
I'm sure this is something the party is looking into, but if in the chance Kerry were to win and he had a sitting senator for VP, this obviously raises another question about the majority republicans have in the senate. It grew in '02, and we're expected to LOSE seats in the senate as it is with so many southern democratic senators not running again.

Of course, depending on the state we could gain that seat again but it makes it all the more frustrating. Then again based on the state's election laws a dem. governor would appoint a senator for a certain time period.

So what are some states which avoid this scenario?

If that's the case, I'd prefer that Kerry not go with Nelson, maybe Landreu because LA has a dem gov. Plus, with Jebby in office, would he appoint a puke for the office? I'm not familiar with FL election law.

1. If you're thinking of Edwards or Graham...
they're both stepping down anyway. Otherwise it seems to me a bad idea unless, of course, the state in question has a Democratic governor. It's bad enough that, if Kerry is elected, we'll be losing his Massachusetts seat for at least a couple of years.

3. No. This costs us a Senate seat unless the gov's a Democrat
That's one reason Edwards is a good choice. Likewise for Clark or RFK, Jr.

4. I just don't like a two Senator
ticket. Too much voting records to criticize. I perfer a Governor or Wes Clark. Vilsack, Clark, or Richardson

5. That's already going to happen anyway.
Shit Romney gets to pick Kerry's replacement, should he win the election. Probably the only way Massachussettes would have ever had a 'Puke senator.

6. I'd prefer that Kerry not go with Nelson as well
If Florida had a Democratic governor (or if Massachusetts had a Democratic governor, for that matter), I'd be putting Nelson among my top three candidates. However, I think that taking back the Senate could almost be labeled impossible if we start out the cycle losing Florida and Massachusetts. We'd have to keep Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Louisiana, and pick up Alaska, Illinois, Oklahoma, and either Pennslvania or Colorado in order to keep the Senate in our hands. If Nelson is the nominee, we'll probably have to really step up the campaign in Missouri (which we should do anyway, it is a presidential year, after all) in order to have a better chance at reclaiming the Senate.
