Kucinich calls for investigation of Haiti events
Campaign Press Release recieved via e-mail- bolding my emphasis on items which struck me as particularly impressive

Kucinich to Call for Major Investigation Into US Role in Haiti

For Immediate Release: March 7, 2004
Contact: Matt Harris: (o) 216.889.2004, (c) 216.403.3980, press@kucinich.us

Miami-Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich will take his presidential campaign
to Miami's "Little Haiti" on Monday, March 8th, where in a major policy
address at the Veye Yo Club (28 NE 54th Street, 10:00 - 11:00 AM) he will
talk about the situation in Haiti.

Kucinich is expected to call for:
- An investigation into the role the US played in arming the forces that
arose in opposition to Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and in
removing Aristide from office

- A broadening of the investigation into the role the US played in
blocking funds earmarked for Haiti from the World Bank and the IMF
- Immediate release of those funds to Haiti now that it needs them more
than ever
- Sweeping reforms in US immigration policy towards Haitians, which now
appears to be racially motivated and discriminatory (one policy for
Cubans, another more harsh policy for Haitians)

- Reaffirmation of Democratic principles in which the US fairly and
impartially support democratically-elected leaders regardless of the
Administration's particular regard for specific individuals elected, and a
renewed commitment to stand firmly against armed aggression and coup
d'etats.
- A broad investigation into the facts surrounding Jean-Bertrand
Aristide's controversial Feb. 29th departure from Haiti

21. I was wondering what all that was going to be spent on
Considering that the whole amount is free to be spent however he likes.

The reconstruction of Iraq is supposed to cost $12B over ten years. I'd like to see an accounting of how the whole $87 B is spent.

2. Related link to Kerry interview
is in this thread

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x443949

I read it after reading Kucinich's press release. I was really struck by the comments that Kerry can't seem to make decisive declarations the way Bush does. Here we have Kucinich able to do it with the right priorities in mind.

I'm not pointing this out to slam Kerry- this is one of those criticisms I think he'd better strongly consider working on for the next few months. Take some lessons from Kucinich Senator. Stop sneering at him and pay attention.

5. Even the media has commented that Kerry needs to "define" himself
Its what I love about Dennis...you know exactly who is he and what he stands for and if you have a question- he will answer you directly...truthfully. No equivocating or dancing around things. I really hope Kerry is able to do that too...as you said somewhere else ds, I like that in a President...
Yeah, me too.

Peace

6. Americans
who give democratic principles more than lip service should be honoring Dennis Kucinich for his unflagging efforts to base our choices on them. There's talking, and there's walking.

There's knowing your mind and standing your ground, and there's flip-flopping, side-stepping, and window dressing.

I'll take the walker.

11. Once again, we find ourselves with too many fronts to keep up with
I'm so amazed that, in the midst of an already incredible campaign schedule, Dennis is keeping up with everything, and leading the way. He must write in his sleep. :)

Somehow, I think the Dems are going to have to find a way to fund their own investigations, as there certainly isn't going to be any forthcoming for the reich wing.

Kanary, having a hard time not being sick over it alll........

Another Delusional Diehard for Dennis!!

Kucinich 2004!

28. Is there any news today on how he is doing?
Yes, it's good he's getting some much-needed rest. I'm sure his pillow has been calling to him. :)

However, I'd like to know how he's doing, if there's any recent news.

Thanks for the update!

This was on the front page of his site this morning, then it was gone within an hour. You can still find it on the press releases page, but the blurb on the front page was pulled pretty quick.

18. It's because he had to cancel the appearance.
The last word I got was that he was hoping to speak by phone but he has an intestinal illness and is taking a few days off to recover from it.:-(
Here's the official press release on that-

19. Ah ok I get it now.
I wish they'd have rewritten the Haiti release without the appearance announcement and left it up there.

Some people (yes, even here) don't seem to 'get' what's going on down there. :(

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti AP

Victims complained the peacekeepers did nothing.

"The peacekeepers were nowhere near where the shooting was," said Alma Coastal, 31, who was shot twice in the left shoulder.

French commander Col. Daniel Leplatois defended the peacekeepers, saying: "We're not able to secure the lives of all of the demonstrators."

Aristide supporters said they canceled their march because peacekeepers had not promised the same level of security they gave their opponents. A pro-Aristide rally was instead planned for Monday.

"The Americans are only here to protect those who helped oust Aristide," said Ednar Ducoste, 23. "If we had guns, we would be fighting against them right now."

26. I heard Colin Powell talking about this on NPR this morning
saying they did everything they could diplomatically to help Aristide against the rebels, but that we weren't going to 'prop up' a bad guy or words to that effect.

How does the man sleep at night?
