for their own benefit and that of their masters, i.e. the individuals and corporations that own their outlets.
They quite literally cannot be trusted, anymore than Luce's writers could be.
I recently saw that old b&w movie about Boy's Town in which one of the boys (Mickey Rooney--I told you it was an OLD movie) was apparently doing something wrong and the head of Boy's Town was asking the publisher of the local paper to hold off on printing the story because he needed more time. The publisher said doing something like that because the priest was his friend would put the credibility of his paper in question; that people relied on him to tell the truth no matter who it hurt.
Of course, it was a lie then and its a lie now. The current media is exactly like the folks that reminded us to Remember the Maine, only they get to say it on camera instead of in print.
Remember that when you hear news of companies like Microsoft suggesting we pay for email. The internet is the most subversive communications format in history, and the powerful will do whatever is in their power to shut it down or restrict it to those who toe the party line.
Oh, the times! Oh, the mores! That I should find common cause with Howard Stern! It is good that I am old and will die soon.
