Can a Mormon be elected president?
What does Romney's campaign prove? Anything? I know a chronic flip-flopper can't get elected. Does it prove that a non-Christian can't win?

This post is meant to be as open as possible. It's not a subtle dig at anyone. Race, Religion, and Gender have been huge issues this campaign.

5. Sure. Mitt Romney could have been elected President. The problem was that
in order for Mitt Romney to get to the general election, he had to first get past the GOP primaries--and in trying to do that, he destroyed himself.

Coming from a direct dependent of a Mormon President and the first Mayor of Salt Lake City, and raised in a conservative Protestant home I can tell you that unless Mormon's change substantial parts of their unique Christology they will never be accepted by atleast 40% of the evangelicals (as well as others).

My father a rabid conservative (Goldwater) who strongly believed in "better dead than red" (although he himself was a gentle man) would have voted for a socialist before a mormon.

9. I'm not sure Mormonism was Mitt's biggest problem with the right wing base.
It was more likely his flip-flopping. He carpetbagged his holy underwear clad ass up to Massachusetts and ran as a "liberal" pro-choice, pro-gay rights candidate, and of course that platform won't play with the fundagelicals, nor would Mitt's insistence that he'd changed his positions.

10. It was his running to the left of Teddy Kennedy, then running to the right of Ronnie Reagan
He didn't just flip flop, he zig zagged.

12. Yes
Mitt Romney's failure as a candidate has much more to do with his flip-flops, his insincerity, and his generally being a complete knob. His religion may have cost him a few votes in the SOuth, but I doubt that it made much of a difference in the grand scheme of things.

A Mormon almost won the Democratic nomination in my lifetime. In 1976, Arizona Congressman Mo Udall finished second to Jimmy Carter in the delegate count. Strangely, Udall never won a primary, but he almost always finished a strong second or third to Carter, Brown, Hatch, or Scoop Jackson. Udall was a great Democrat and would have made a damn good president. I still have my father's Udall button from that race.

For the record, Mormons consider themselves Christians. Their theology may not be in synch with what is considered mainstream, but I'll take them at their word.

16. Sure! Just not THAT one.
Maybe the next one will be a little less creepy, a little less shiny, and I'm sure he or she will do better. Religion only mattered to the fundies, the rest of us think it's none of our business pretty much. We just thought he was unqualified. Oh, and a Republican.
