Edit: No wait. That is General Staff brass. In which case, it's late '70s. That sounds more likely. But damn, the man just doesn't seem to age like normal humans, so who knows?

I thought he was about 30 years old. 1970s.

OMG, he was MORE gorgeous than he is now.

Only three assignments during which he might have worn that brass:

May 1971 - July 1971 -- Office of the Army Chief of Staff (26yo)
Feb. 1978 - June 1979 -- Asst XO to General Haig, SACEUR, NATO (33-34yo)
Oct. 1983 - July 1984 -- Office of the Army Chief of Staff (38-39yo)

I'm guessing it was while he was working for Haig. Age seems right, and he'd have more likely required an official photo. And the flags in the background seem right.

Wish I could see the other collar better, where his rank would be.

I was right the first time. That is a general's star.

Company and field grade officer wear rank on their right collar and branch insignia on their left. Wes Clark was in the armor branch. But while serving on a General Staff, officers wear General Staff insignia instead of their branch--it looks a lot like a general's star, but slightly smaller. Which is more than you want to know, or ever expected to hear about on DU, I'm sure.

Anyway, general officers, which technically no longer belong to a specific branch, wear their rank on both collars.

But I found the article with the photo, and here's the caption underneath:

Interesting article, altho I don't agree with the author's assessment toward the end. It's based on second-hand info (hearsay, if you will). Everything that's first-hand is positive.

That means the photo was taken sometime between Oct 89-Oct 91. So he was 44 at the youngest. I told you he just doesn't age like normal folk. I for one think he's better looking now. Not that he was any too shabby then. Probably more a function of my age than his.

someone posts about how they met Clark or Gert, I get depressed cause I was too *busy*. I even had a chance to meet Clark when he came to Georgia recently but couldn't make it. Anyways, I think they are the greatest, they put themselves out there on the firing line for all of us, and it gets me right here.

But here's my picture of meeting the General last Friday. :evilgrin:



By the way, from that article I linked to earlier, this part is interesting to me, for two reasons (the obvious being General Clark's accomplishments--care to venture how many American lives he saved?):

"Clark also deserves credit for figuring out how to defeat the extensive Iraqi defense systems used during the first Gulf War, which was critical to our success in ejecting Iraq from Kuwait in 1991. He personally directed construction of a full-scale battle position at Fort Irwin, manned it with opposing-force soldiers using laser tag-style training devices, and then tried to apply current American doctrine to defeat it. When we failed, he guided the rewriting of that doctrine until we found a solution. This solution was then videotaped and sent to U.S. forces preparing to execute Operation Desert Storm. The results are history."

The second reason is because I helped with the battle position design and opposing force tactics. Only tangentially, and I never got to meet him back then--only actually made the trip to Ft Irwin once during that time frame. Yeah, I know... :boring:

That's the one thing I love about our General - he loves to take pictures with his supporters. He never seems put off by it - he'll even tell you - "Wait - lemme do (insert campaign function) and then we'll do it. OK?"
