Put yourself in the shoes of a Repub that hates McCain and Hillary..
Edited on Fri Feb-08-08 02:13 PM by kentuck
Would you be inclined to vote for McCain just because you hate Hillary? Or if McCain was running against Obama, would you be inclined to maybe sit it our because you think Obama is a personable fellow? Or would you be inclined to vote for McCain no matter who the Democrat was, because we can't have those big -taxing liberals in charge of our government? Which of the above scenarios would you find most likely?

1. I would vote for the candidate my party nominated
that's my policy and I'm sticking to it.

10. good for you!
But I think the question here is which candidate is going to gain votes from independents and republics. We'll need these votes to help us to victory. Another factor to consider is which one will have the longest coattails to help us elect a strong Democratic Congress.

11. Obama is my answer
I'll vote for whoever we put up, but to answer the two questions about coalition building and coattails the answer for me is easy.

2. I'll let you know
One of the reasons I want stuff on McCain is because a co-worker of mine said that he was for Edwards-but if he didn't get the nod, he'd go McCain. It will be interesting, if I am successful in getting him to not vote McCain, who he would support. I know when I asked him, he said that he felt "it wasn't time for a woman" and that he "feared Obama would be assassinated."

4. Judging by the ones posting here in GDP
I'd say they're supporting Obama. Problem is, they've always been a noisy, yet small group.

5. My own hunch is that this whole "Republicans dislike McCain" thing...

... will turn out to be a mirage, for the most part.

When it comes time to step in the voting booth and cast a ballot, dyed-in-the-wool republicans will vote republican. No matter who the GOP nominates, and no matter who WE nominate.

That's why, IMO, we (as a party) need to quit psycho-analyzing the psychos out there, and just move ahead, proudly embracing our progressive ideals. People who are capable of hearing and listening will make up their minds accordingly. People who have their emotions, identities and egos wrapped up in one candidate or another... they're gonna do what they're gonna do anyway.

6. Agree with Reply #1. The Wingnuts will suck it down and vote for McCain
He'll nominate a Veep they like; he'll spend all October pandering to them; and they'll all be crossing their fingers about his being 77 when reelection time comes around.

7. The hard corps of the GOP will opt to "stay home" if Obama gets the nod, but their hate is VISCERAL
toward HRC. Most Republicans would figuratively low-crawl across broken glass to vote AGAINST HRC. Seeing Bill Clinton's "Lee Atwater" type campaign dirty tricks, I'm beginning to understand (not condone) this hatred of *All things Clinton."

9. " The Base"

will go with whoever the GOP tells them to. Conservatives aren't exactly legendary for their free-thinking skills. And staying home on election day isn't an option for most people of the authoritarian bent, either. A non-vote is too much of a protestation, and protest does not compute for these people. I'm already seeing the pundits and the commentators begrudingly drumming up support for McCain on TV. So, in answer to your question, it doesn't matter who our nominee is. And, "those big-taxing Liberals" is only a talking point they'll use as justification.
