the right wing is avoiding the issue of equal rights for all by bringing up marriage. in this country for whatever reason many people oppose same sex marriage. i'm sure much of it may have to do with religion. but when it comes to speaking of equal rights to all people, not just in terminology, but in specific rights such as issues involving child custody, property rights, taxes etc, it's much harder for people to oppose granting those rights to same sex couples. our constitution does not allow for discrmination based on sexual orientation. and it would be tough to get many to support amending to constitution to deny these rights to an entire group of people. it's much easier to avoid discussing those issues by saying marriage is between a man and a woman. this is why right wingers always say things like "if we change the definition of marriage to between man and man then what if someone wants to marry their relative, or beastiality, etc." this shows how weak their argument is in denying rights to gays.but none of this addresses the specific rights and whether bush supports granting them in the form of civil unions.
democrats need to take charge and control the direction of this debate to make it one of equal rights for all and not one of the definition of marriage. same sex marriage will come easily along with the rights. it's already happening all over the country. what we need to do is make clear those rights of married couples given by the government , both state and federal can not be denied to same sex couples because of what this country stands for which is equal rights for all.
