Self Destruction Here...How very sad...
This place, where you would once go for rational discourse, is now the home of fruitcakes. Some are very recent fruitcakes and you would think the old timers would know better than to take the bait.

This particular place, well loved and visited often, is becomming irrelevant and irrational...we are eating our own. It does not bode well.

1. have some faith that the emotional juvenile will blossom into the intellectual adult...
does function follow forum, or forum follow function?

8. I've been thinking about that.

When I was a kid, Kennedy and Johnson were running..
and the emotional atmosphere was intense.

I think I felt about JFK the same as youngsters feel
about Obama.. and now I'm an adult with excellent
judgment and critical thinking skills. Even so,
I still feel the glow of Camelot and the Kennedy
legacy, even though I know all about Kennedy's
flaws and mistakes. There's just something about
appeal and charisma that can take hold of people,
especially nowadays when we so desperately need a
good leader.

Life is good.

2. I'm with you. Find it hard to post anymore, the hostility is palpable
It has become a place that if you are not "with them" you are "against them" (sound familiar?) and free game for labeling, ridicule and insult. Sad.

6. and how do you propose we end it? This is no longer a discussion of ideas
but it has been a barrage of one personal attack after another

I wonder if DU is a reflection of the general public, after 8 years of bush we have all become crazy

10. "very recent fruitcakes" -- Yeah, it's fishy.
Lots of alleged supporters of a particular candidate with low post counts reviving all the golden oldies of the late 90s Clinton Wars, posting right wing sources, etc.

Very fishy.

11. What has really broken my spirit
started the night of the NH debate. The sexism on DU was ASTONISHING - when I was a puppy I noticed sexism all the time - I have spent 25 years in corporate America - and I could give you tons of examples that I have personally experienced - however it has sort of subsided for me - or maybe I just got use to it - the shit I have seen on DU has been like a slap in the face - people claiming they are absolutely not sexist and then saying sexist things - it is SO ingrained that progressive Democrats don't even see it - so sadly now as a middle aged woman I see it really isn't any better now than it was when I was a puppy - and in fact I'm a bit concerned it might be worse.

This has been a VERY rude awakening for me - and I am sad....

On a more general issue its not even just DU - although it has been really bad here - but even some of our progressive talk show hosts are getting on my last nerve....its almost like there is no where to turn anymore....

Hopefully it will get much better when this thing is settled and I think "they" need to settle it soon with some back room deal if they have to - because folks we have got to start fighting McCain....we're in for a VERY TOUGH fight in November no matter who our candidate is....

People have fallen right into the Rovian trap.

Maybe it will be better once the nominee is chosen....we can only hope.

It's part of being a Democrat, or a progressive as the case may be. Who'd have thought DU would survive after 2004? But it did and it will this time. :)

28. the pissing contest between Clinton and Obama supporters is destroying any chance . . .
we have of winning in November . . . all of the talking points the Republicans will ever needs have been articulated and fleshed out by Democrats themselves, and the only opposition research the Repugs will need will be reading DU threads and those in other Democratic forums . . .

more than all that, however, is the fact that Republican corporations STILL control the voting and vote-counting process, so the final results will be whatever they want them to be . . . they did it in 2000, they did it in 2004, and there's nothing to stop them from doing it in 2008 . . . they have the motive, the means, and the opportunity -- and absolutely no conscience . . .

it's not who votes that counts; it's who counts the votes . . . and on that score alone, we lose . . .
