Has Hillary won the majority of Independent support in any of primarys?
If Hillary is going to have trouble winning Independent support, she will likely have zero to little chance at beating John McCain. In the general election, both sides will eventually end up voting along party lines for their candidate. So this race, like all recent ones, will come down to who can get Independent support. And so far, Hillary has not been able to attract many.

1. You are assuming what?
That if Obama isn't the nominee then McCain will get every single Indie voter?

That's a pretty bizarre theory.

2. Yep - per CNN:

56% to Obamas 32% in AR

54% to Obamas 42% in MA

40% to Obamas 30% in Florida
http://edition.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/epolls/index.html#FLDEM

And his leads aren't always big either:
Obama by only 3% in NJ
Obama by only 4 % in TN

There may be others...I go tired of looking them up :)

3. No idea, maybe in a big state?
I'm honestly not sure if she's ever beaten Obama among independents, I know her people have bragged about winning young voters by a slim margin in two states (CA/MA) while getting creamed in the others. I would imagine a big state with more poor people might be the place where you stand the best chance of finding Hillary winning the independent vote over Obama.

7. Who cares?
All that matters are the Dukakis states! We should all rally around a candidate who can get no more than 200 electoral votes!
:woohoo:
