1. Many states do, so long as you will be 18 on election day.

nothing wrong with that.

You can vote in the primary at 17 if you will be 18 on election day. Nothing new.

They aren't the only state to do it.

I think it's smart. Encourages participation in the primaries starting with their first election.

12. If you turn 18 before the general, you SHOULD be able to vote in the primary
But then, I'm a wacko. I think the voting age should be the same age that people can be tried as an adult in a given state. Let's be consistent: if we believe people are adults for the purpose of criminal prosecution, then how can we say they're not adults for the purpose of voting?

But that's just me. I like consistency in concepts.

16. I think that if someone votes for the first time while
he/she is in high school, then that person may be more likely to vote in subsequent elections.

And I agree that only 17 year olds who will be 18 by the general election should be allowed to vote.

19. Isn't this typical?
If you are old enough to vote on November 4--on election day, you are allowed
to participate in the primaries.

It's been that way for ages in most states.

It makes sense. If you are going to vote in November--because you'll be 18--you
should be able to participate in those primaries.

41. It happens
And good for you. I was in 6th grade back then and we debated this issue in front of 400 kids at a general assembly. Thankfully, I was on the pro-vote side and we won. Two years later, not so fortuante. We had a Mock Congress and I was assigned the role of Bill Archer (R-TX) which gave me license to be mean to Democrats. It was easy, and lots of 8th graders laughed their heads off. An early indicator of the Reagan Revolution and Young Republicans across the nation, now that I think of it...

I voted in a primary at 17, but that's been a long friggin' time ago. It was the first election where an 18 year old could vote......something I organized petitions for back in the 70's.

Congratulations to your daughter on her first election.

38. Perhaps you should look at your wording. When you get an enormous negative reaction,
it could be that everyone else is insane. It could also be that your wording was provocative. Frankly, with no context, with a challenging 'since when?' statement, and given the history Clinton supporters have had with attacking Obama's youthful support base, it's not surprising that so many took it in a negative light.

35. The Twenty-Sixth Amendment
The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age. Congress shall have the power to enforce this law through appropriate legislation.

The XXVI Amendment prohibits states from denying the vote to those 18 and older. It does not prohibit them from allowing younger persons to vote.

Some states allow persons who will be 18 on the General Election Day to vote in primary elections, some do not. It's up to the lawmakers of the states. Likewise, if a state wanted to lower its voting age or seventeen or sixteen it would be allowed.

After all 12 year olds can be tried as adults in court, so shouldn't they have the privileges of adults also?

I agree!

States should be consistent in their evaluation of the capacity for adult judgment.

Of course, I only kinda agree. I don't think 12 year-olds should be tried as adults, period. But if you are going to try them as adults, then denying them the franchise makes zero sense.
