As much as we may disagree with those people, they are not stupid. (OK, maybe on some issues, but when it comes to campaigning, getting a message out, devising talking-points, etc., they are not dumb.)

What they are doing is distancing McCain from Bush. They know damn well that they cannot go into the GE running on the idea that a third term for the BushNeoCons is a good idea. The polls bear this out. They know that McCain's voting record scores high among conservative groups and low among liberal groups. He has a congressional voting record of over 25 years. He's a conservative. There is no doubt about that.

So the far right base -- the same people who still stand with Bush and comprise that whopping 20-something % approval rating -- would doom McCain to certain failure if they got in lockstep with him now.

They will vote for him in November. Make no mistake about that. What they have to do right now, however, is distance themselves from McCain and allow him to continue courting Independents and even some alleged Democrats (the Lieberman wing, for example).

1. I kind of got that impression too.
Seems too obvious, like Bre'r Rabbit telling Bre'r Bear not to toss him into the briar patch.

10. One McCain-Bush hug, coming right up!
Beating McCain, fortunately, is as simple as running these pics:

5. I do, too, but I think they're following talk radio's lead.
And what will happen in Sept or Oct? Talk radio will then begin to turn their focus to (insert Democratic ticket here) and by November, all the dittoheads/Hannitybots/etc. will march right into the voting booths and vote for McCain.

The right-wing is an organized echo-chamber. They all march to the same beat. Always have, always will. This year will be no different.

6. Same here...
but that doesn't change the fact that blood thirsty warmongering is the top issue with Repubs these days, and McCain totally fits that bill. Despite the whining, they'll vote for him.

7. some haven't liked him since 2000; I agree they'll probably vote for him though
I also fear this may be one time the VP selection makes a difference. If he picks some far-right loon, it won't make them like mccain more but may get them to turn out

8. Well, Kansas certainly dislikes McCain, and for a very good reason

other than the right-wing talk radio agenda. Seems he wants to close Gitmo and install the prisoners in Kansas, where the facility chosen to house them has just announced its expansion. Kansans are concerned about property values dropping further, about new businesses being discouraged from opening, and about the increasing possibility of a terrorist attack right here in the heartland -- something Kansans have not had to concern themselves with until now.

If Obama is the nominee, there is a real chance Kansas will go blue. Now, don't laugh. You gotta be here to understand it, and I AM here.

The GOP wants a Clinton-McCain race (if he loses, they can control Hillary via the DLC). McCain is just playing his little "independent maverick" game, but you can bet his VP will be of the hardliner variety, and like both Bushes, he will make a sharp right turn once in office. The endorsement of Hillary by right-wing radio and the GOP delegate drama are red herrings.

12. Yes, they are that stupid. This goes back a LONG time.
I flicked on the radio when the Gang of 14 formed to stop Frist from going nuclear. McCain was in the Gang of 14, and Rush hated on McCain for 3 hours. Not only do the talk radio folks hate McCain, so do their listeners, who serve as opinion leaders for their apolitical friends. My wingnut next door neighbor adamantly said she would never vote for McCain EVEN IF he was running against Hillary (and she hates Hillary). So this is real, it's a genie long out of the bottle, and it can't go back in just because he secured the nomination with the more moderate side of the party.

13. Remember, all those RWers who were "insulting" the Dems by pointing out that
the votes on Bush's policies were "along party lines" ... meaning that John McCain, despite anything he said, was in lockstep with whatever Herr Bush demanded ...
