Dennis Kucinich invited to speak at March 20 NYC demo
Edited on Thu Mar-11-04 12:31 AM by corporatewhore
Dear Kucinich supporters,

Many of you are aware that March 20th marks the one-year anniversary of the pre-emptive war in Iraq. A number of leading peace groups and coalitions have recognized this day as a Global Day of Action to protest against the invasion, occupation and corporate control of Iraq. Rallies and marches will bring millions of people into the streets in cities around the world, to rally for peace and protest the effects of the Bush Administration's policies at home and abroad.

Dennis Kucinich is the only national political leader who represents the peace movement. Before the war began Dennis Kucinich saw through the lies that fueled the Bush Administration's climate of fear and violence. He led the opposition to the war in Congress, and he remains one of the most credible voices within the Democratic Party when speaking about the need to bring our troops home. His position - US out, UN in - remains the only credible alternative to the current reality.

For these reasons, and for others, Dennis Kucinich has been invited to speak at one of the largest March 20th rallies, in New York City. Supporters of the Kucinich Campaign will be on hand there, and all over the country, to bring home the message: US out, UN in.

Please locate peace activities taking place in your part of the country, and work with the Kucinich Campaign to make them a success. Look for events in your area at http://www.unitedforpeace.org/calendar.php?caltype=17

Thank you,
Charles Lenchner
National Movements Coordinator
Kucinich for President

2. Interesting side story here
There is also a Democratic 'Unity Dinner' happening at the same time (approx) as the protest, where all the candidates, past and present, are invited to attend and speak. Dennis is blowing that dinner off to go to the protest. My understanding from the campaign is that he is going to the protest because he believes a Democrat needs to be there.

IMO, he would have been better served to carry his message to the dinner. More media, bigger audience, more impact. Of course, there is nothing wrong with him appearing in NYC. I'll be there, too. But I am wondering which venue is more appropriate for his message: The choir in NYC, or the Dems enjoying 'Unity' who fucking need to hear it loud and clear? I say #2.

6. But going his own way...
...is one of the things that makes him Dennis. I don't mean that you're wrong, it's just that Dennis has that great contrarian streak in him that endears him to you, me, and everyone who has supported him. We're just going to have to enjoy Dennis being Dennis. :-)

He puts people before the party, and although you have a valid point on why he should attend the dinner, I can't see him doing anything but mixing it up with the people.

46. So true!
Let anyone who would call Dennis a vanity candidate see that he continues to stand with the PEOPLE of this country, arm in arm.
This man does not have a pretentious bone in his body.

Edited on Thu Mar-11-04 12:15 AM by Desertrose
would all those candidates "enjoying unity" even listen??

A hard call...between those who need to hear it & won't or those who already know but can use the boost from a Dem who cares.....

With ALL Kerry ALL the TIME....would Dennis still be heard???

Peace

24. the anxiety of waiting is killing me
And yes, things are very slow before the Great Procrastinators start pouring in later this month. I have been averaging only 1-2 appointments a day the past 2 weeks. That's a whole lotta nuthin' for 6-8 hours a day! But the latecomers all have issues and attitudes, plus will likely owe big balances and have a 'kill the messenger' vibe.

14. I've seen Dennis speak dozens of times in all sorts of venues
He has never, ever, ever failed to get heard.

Think about it: Sure, there will be die-hard candidate people there, but there will also be plenty of people who, like us, spent the last year fighting this war. Imagine Dennis getting a standing ovation at that unity dinner (and I'd bet my shoes he would) in a roomful of 'Kerry people' (that would surely have a phatt contingent of Dean people, too).

THAT is a message.

16. like I said
I don't think you're wrong. You have valid points. But what can we do? If you were able to advise him this very evening, do you think he'd still go with his original plans? I am just saying, his choice - whatever the strategic implications - is not in the least surprising, and I know you don't think so either.

Ah fuck it, how about a beer? :toast:

42. He's done it before
It didn't matter. Jefferson Jackson dinner, IIRC. Fat lot of good it did that he was the only candidate to get a standing ovation, then.

Similarly he has outperformed in debates, frequently getting among the loudest if not the loudest applause.

So exactly what would be the point of abandoning the peace movement (which is obviously the cause closest to his heart) in order to once again prove to himself and everyone what an inspirational candidate he is and how much integrity he has, and how well his ideas resonate with the audience?

38. I'll go with Dennis' pick.
Basic tenet of American evolution.'When the people lead, the politicians will follow. Not all, but many at this unity dinner are impossible..They do not want to and will refuse to listen to Dennis.Closed minds.
With enough protests, the AMerican people will force the landed gentry to come around. Dennis, we are all proud of you. Wellstone would take your advice and go to the protest..
Who needs the rubber chicken circuit when you can be out and hear the voice of the people. That we need more of..
With enough Rowdy people in the streets, maybe media anchors will have a stroke and croak. Who needs them..Of course, I am referring to the Tom Brokaw incident at last year's March protests.

That's all I can say.

I was going to find a venue for March 20th close to me; probably L.A., but guess what? They just scheduled a work day for the 20th; we all agreed to work on a group project on a Saturday (the 13th), and yesterday they "switched" Saturdays. Since it needs the whole group and I already promised, I'm working that day. :grr:

47. March 20th gathering in St. Paul
http://www.antiwarcommittee.org/3-20IraqFlyer.pdf

Global Day of Protest:
The World STILL Says NO to War…and YES to Peace & Justice!

Saturday, March 20, 2004

1:30 p.m. — Assemble at Hallie Q. Brown/MLK Community Center Plaza, 270 North Kent Street (at Iglehart), St. Paul

2:15 p.m. — March to State Capitol (approximately 1.5 miles)

3:00 p.m. — Rally on the State Capitol front steps, 75 Constitution Avenue, St. Paul

The March 20th Global Day of Action for Peace and Justice marks the first anniversary of the Iraq War. Neighbors for Peace organziations have cooperated with other Twin Cities activist organizations to plan a local event to coincide with the others that will occur around the world. It is our chance to join in solidarity with the world community that opposes war and occupation. Please bring your family and friends, signs, banners, and hope…for an end to war and occupation, an end to the Bush administration, and a better world for all.

We will assemble at the Hallie Q. Brown/MLK Community Center in St. Paul. Our march will offer diverse opportunities to show your oppostion to the war and support for peace and justice. The front of the march will include organized chanting, followed by a section of In the Heart of the Beast puppets. Those who prefer a more quiet, solemn, or singing atmosphere will come together behind the puppets. Of course, you may move from one section of the march to another, as you like.

We will arrive on the Capitol steps for a rally, with speakers, music, and a few moments of silence in honor of those who have died and suffered in the Iraq War. Our speakers will include Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer, University of St. Thomas, Justice and Peace Studies Department; Phil Steger, Friends for a Non-Violent World; Chante Wolf, Veterans for Peace; and more.

Sponsored by the March 20th Coalition. I heard tonight from my legislative district coordinator that Dean would probably release his delegates to Kerry (though they may not go--don't think he's any better at catherding than Kucinich)after his tour of several cities starting with Seattle on 3/18. She sez the dinner is on the 25th.
