Sources: Gore won't endorse
He's the most prominent Democrat yet to take a side in the presidential election, but two sources close to Al Gore tell us not to expect the former vice president to endorse either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama any time during the primary season.

The sources say Gore talks with both Clinton and Obama, and is on good terms with both. But with Sen. John Kerry and Bill Clinton both aligned to a candidate, Gore has a role to serve as the neutral elder statesman in the party.

If an agreement needs to be struck between Clinton and Obama down the road, Gore is in position to be the likely facilitator of that discussion.

Gore also will want to work closely with whoever wins the nomination to promote an environmental agenda.

1. That's as good as an endorsement for Obama IMHO
Seriously he owes the Clintons that much... but no more apparently ;)

3. NO, it is what is it. He's staying NEUTRAL. What with everyone jumping on the Obama
bandwagon - maybe this is a clear repudiation, Obama??

Don' let the BAM! blur your vision. Gore will be a neutral elder stateman.

5. Gore is Mr. Environment, and he needs to be that first and foremost.
An endorsement, even of Hillary, would be disadvantageous to his sincere concern for the future of our planet.

6. If the convention is deadlocked Gore would be the #1 compromise candidate.
He should stay neutral. For now.

8. Good for him. It's not required, and it's his decision. Screw anyone who "expects" him to do it.
The notion that a candidate needs to be "anointed," I.M.H.O., is simply an indication that the candidate doesn't have what it takes to win without an anointing.

Keep on rockin' in the free world, President Gore.

:patriot:

9. To be totally honest.
I'm glad he's not endorsing anyone.

Let him stay on the sidelines.

10. Fine by me.
If he endorsed Obama, the spin from the pundits would be that he betrayed the Clintons.

If he endorsed Hillary Clinton, the spin from the pundits would be something else dergoatory. (He thinks she'll give him a job?)

The pundits wouldn't present the actual reasons Gore stated for his endorsement, just as when he endorsed Howard Dean, they didn't present Gore's stated reasons (Gore supported Dean for opposing the Iraq War before it started.)

11. Sounds like a wise move.
The party may need a neutral interlocateur (sp?) with credibility at some point.

12. He wants a brokered convention.
It'd be stupid to endorse when the two candidates could go straight to a convention.
