Top Hillary Supporter: Some Whites In Pennsylvania "Are Not Ready" To Support Black Candidate
By Eric Kleefeld - February 12, 2008, 12:52PM

This explanation from a prominent Hillary supporter in Pennsylvania, regarding why he thinks Barack Obama could lose his state, seems a bit off message.

According to a columnist for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Gov. Ed Rendell (D-PA) made the following argument in a meeting with the paper's editorial board as to why Obama could have some difficulty in his state's April 22 primary:

"You've got conservative whites here, and I think there are some whites who are probably not ready to vote for an African-American candidate."

1. Why would *conservative* whites vote in a Democratic primary anyway?
Let them vote for Huckster.

18. My sister, a life-long republican, won't vote for any of that group.
She said she'll go with whoever is the Dem nominee over any of the current crop of repubs.

2. Well Ed, guess what? There are some whites who won't vote for
a woman either! If his comment was intended to say that sexism & racism is not dead, I agree with him! I'm HOPING that they are a minority now.

3. (Shrug)
It's probably true as far as it goes. I don't read it as a coded message or warning of any kind. We'll see whether it ends up making a big difference to his numbers. Meantime, I see no reason for the Obama campaign (or us) to get in a snit about it - he's just describing what he sees as the political climate. Some may see it as an endorsement of 'not voting for a black man' because he didn't condemn it, but frankly I don't think that voters who dislike Obama because of his race were waiting for the governor to give them a feeling of acceptance.

In short, a non-story that we should not waste time or energy over.

7. I grew up in PA, and then moved to South Carolina. PA was surprisingly
more racist. I can believe this. I don't have high hopes for Obama in my home state.

9. I grew up in PA too, and you're right! At least Pgh. was. I moved to SC in 1987.
I grew up in Allegheny County (Pittsburgh and suburbs) and what a lot of people don't realize is that entire area is comprized of "neighborhoods". There's Polish Hill which os mostly Polish, Squirrrel Hill that's mostly Jewish, little Italy, and the Hill District which is almost all black. I don't mean there's NO areas that there isn't a bit of a mix of cultures, but I think I was 14 or 15 before I ever saw a black person, my mother really frowned upon Italians, and both my parents spoke dispariagingly about the ONe MEXICAN FAMILY you would see on the street once in a while.

The younger people in Pa. have pretty much ignored all those OLD feelings, but you have to remember, Pa. ha the OLDEST population of any State in the Country! A lot of those old folks are still there (young ones move somewhere else where there are jobs) so a lot of those old attitudes are still there too.

10. Yes, I grew up near PGH too, in the suburbs, and the only time I saw
black people on a regular basis was when I attended Pitt. Pittsburgh is full of little enclaves of particular ethnicities who are suspicious of other nationalities. I remember a friend's father saying he didn't like so-and-so, an acquaintance, because he was Serbian--Serbian! LOL! Who the hell cares whether or not you're of Serbian descent? Well, in PGH, they do--it's the only place I've lived where people routinely inquire about your ancestry. Polish, Italian, Irish, German, Serb, Czech--it all matters there for some reason. It's kind of a hoot, but not when it affects Obama's chances! :-(

15. The one thing I really miss from Pgh. is the REAL ethnic restaurants!
I'm not saying that there aren't ethnic restaurants anywhere we've live, but most are not "real representations". I remember going to Max & Erma's on the North Side for real German food, or a great Italian place in Bloomfield. We've lived in SC, TX and now Ga. and I've been hunting for a GOOD potato pancake ever since 1987. Haven't found any yet!

You have to admit, most of the groups did get along though. I don't recall any fights, just suspicions of the unknown & misunderstood. It bothers me that here in the South, I can't really say that. There's still hatered of blacks, hispanics, and yankees...no matter what your background is!

22. NO! Most of Pgh. is Dem. There's a Pub glut around Philly, but Pgh. usually
pout numbers them. It's been that way for many years. I think it was mostly because of all the steel mills in Pgh, but they're all gone now. There still are lots of people who worked in those mills and familiey of those steel workers who are still STRONG Dems!
