Is it just me or did Rove just fall into Kerry's trap?
The fact is that Kerry knew that the mic was on, he knew what he was saying, and he knew what Rove would do. He got Rove to spread the message using his fine tuned media whore machine.

Rove should have know that the best thing for him to do was ignore the remarks so that they wouldn't get any press, but he allowed Kerry to piggy back his message on the republican "outrage" which no one buys because most people think that politicos are liars and crooks anyways.

I almost feel bad posting this in case they haven't figured out how they were played yet, but I am assuming that their arrogance will force them to ignore the obvious.

1. I've been thinking the same thing.
It really takes cohones to do something like that, though. Imagine standing there with a condenser mic pinned to your lapel and saying that.

But it's brilliant! I've already seen headlines in many places that say "Bush is the first to go negative."

2. That is true,
He started going negative when his EVIL mother called our 9 candidates, a "sorry group."

3. It shows me...

....that Kerry has actually grown a set. I was a little concerned that he would be a milquetoast candidate. Guess again. Kerry also refuses to apoligize for the statement, using the attacks on Cleland and McCain as justification.

He is learning how to strike 'em where it hurts!

The radio mouthbreathers are all over it as well. Rush even mentioned LIHOP as an example of a Democrat attack today. LIHOP? On Rush's show?? Gotta love it!

5. He needs to Gore Bush, and the whole Bush machine
Rove also managed to push Kerry's image away from "Liberal Elitist" and toward "pissed off Dem."

9. LOL
This is going to be easier than we thought!

C'mon Rush, let's talk about LIHOP some more. Now do tell, Rush, what does LIHOP stand for?

Oh, thank you, I knew you'd be willing to yammer away at it for an hour or so.

12. President Puke
Lets see...President Kerry was having live ammo fired over his head while Crusader Bunnypants was rolling martini olives across a pool of barf.

Who would you rather have at your side in a fight?

27. Some of us have known about Kerry's "set" for about 35 years now.
I agree that his campaign was not particularly impressive thru 2003, but I have never questioned his personal guts or his ability to run a tough campaign. The Republican's are in for a rude surprise if thet think that calling him a "Massachussett's liberal" or "another Mike Dukakis" is going to make Kerry panic.

JK is just getting started...

6. somebody else agrees
I was explaining to my husband that Kerry intended the remarks tonight. They played the clip over and over so I had plenty of opportunity to point out that the three guys Kerry was talking to weren't expecting him to say such a thing and furthermore, they didn't appear to be the kind of "confidants" one would say such a thing (in hushed tones) to anyway.

After watching this, my spouse, who used to be political behind-the- scenes-man himself, recalled the saying that goes something like, "If you want everyone one in a large room to hear what you're saying, whisper."

And that, in our opinion, is what Kerry was doing. The fact that Rove has the press conditioned for this type of story made it especially sweet.

8. If Kerry really planned that, then I salute him
He got them all. Oh my the outrage. It was the whole pack of Pavlov's dogs on cue.

Funny thing is the Daily Show showed us the "asshole" comment bu$h made about Adam Clymer. Not good. But like Jon said that wasn't his biggest mistake on mic, so he showed the state of the union address last year with the Niger yellowcake lie. "What you mean the mic was on, I didn't know that"

ha ha

What a bunch of whiny babies.

10. I don't beleive that Kerry knew his remarks would be overheard and played
to the nation like this.

He was talking under his breath and I don't believe he intended his words to be overheard.

14. Either Kerry acted brilliantly with some serious political jujitsu,
or he randomly stumbled upon one hell of a lucky event.

I'm sorry but I don't believe in luck like that, and it sounded more like a stage whisper to me then him talking under his breath.

Kerry knew that Rove would jump on this and try to get and apology. If Kerry apologized it would feed into the flip-flop mythos that they are trying to build. Rove thought that he would get an apology, and he didn't realize what Kerry not apologizing would do. With all the cameras on him Kerry stood his ground, and that is what people will see, not a flip-flopper.

At the same time Kerry gets free press for his "liars and crooks" message. The fact that it looked like it might have been an "accident" makes it seem like a "Me thinks the lady doth protest too much" situation to the public.

23. It would be far fetched to think that it was an accident,
but if people wish to "misunderestamate" Kerry by all means, it only makes him more potent.

11. They're just not used to Democrats
who fight back. They are so used to dealing with Democrats who don't fight back that they find themselves at a complete loss.

Keep fighting Kerry! Give 'em hell and never retreat!

I've loved every minute of this debacle. Kerry's face is all over the news; he is proving to be very photogenic and is sounding fantastic as he fearlessly takes on the neocons. I like it!!

16. So when this is all over...
... when an elderly John Kerry is sitting in his rocking chair giving an interview (many years after his 2 terms as President), do you think he will answer honestly the question "Did you know your mic was on?"

21. If that's true, Kerry (or somebody in his campaign) is a great strategist.
It also means that Kerry's got a titanium pair.

Let's hope it doesn't backfire.
