19. He should be touting his small-business measures in the ads...
Edited on Sat Mar-13-04 11:31 AM by belle
when's the last time we've heard about *that* in the media? "Small" businesses. it feels like it's been all corporate all the time lately. He could get a lot of swing votes if he promises to do more on that score.

His record on the whole shows him to be soldily left-leaning but cautious, not exactly the type to set the world on fire with bold innovations. In some ways it's disappointing, but in other ways I think: maybe it's what we need right now. I mean, he needs to act boldly to undo the damage these bastards have done, and that alone might take up all his energy; there's a *lot* of work to be done there. But then, clean-up often falls under the "cautious" personality, too. I hate to say it, because I *do* think we need new ideas on a bigger scale, not just tinkering; but I think maybe for the next four years people just aren't going to be in the mood, anyway. Maybe we need to just kind of collectively calm the hell down, if that makes sense. I feel like I have vertigo from all the crap that's been flying around these past few years.

On edit: also, he seems *thoughtful* and smart, which would be a nice change, to put it mildly.

In summary, he has authored or co-authored more than 350 bills.

I'd say "Put this on the D-Bunker website," but there are rules separating campaign websites from Congressional websites.

So...maybe you could pass this to a friend? :)

8. To quote Janet Jackson, "What have you done for me lately?"
News flash...it's 2000-friggin'-4. The last legislation you can cite is from 3 years ago? I seem to recall a few issues that Congress has voted on since then. He's not the Devil, but he's hardly a saint. He's a career Washington politician. We got what we paid for. Why try to make a silk purse out of an average Washington insider?

9. At what point in this thread did I bestow saintdom on Kerry?
This thread lists a number of his legislative works. It is not at all a completel list. Beatification happens in Rome. This guy, we elect, and then bust his ass to do the right thing...and to fix some of his more profoundly fucked up votes.

10. ...and I don't agree with your assessment (I expect I have to do it humbly
I have one question. If the record represents the man, why does the record end three years ago?

This has been my issue with Kerry. I agree that he has a liberal voting record up to three or four years ago, but what has he done since then? His IRW, NCLB, and Patriot Act votes tell me that he's more concerned with getting re-elected than voting his conscience. Hell, I could pick from dozens of well-intentioned weak Dems...why should I support Kerry?

11. "why should I support Kerry?"
I could say "Because he's the nominee, and we have to defesat Bush," but that's not a good answer.

I could say, "Because he is a good man with a long record of service," but you would justifiably reply with the last three years.

I could say, "He voted for the IWR because he genuinely believed a threat of force had to exist for an inspection regime to be effective. He voted for the Patriot Act along with 99 other Senators while anthrax was rolling down the hall and the nation was gripped in mortal terror, which means Russ Feingold is the only Senator suitable to be President. He voted for NCLB because Kennedy was co-sponsoring it, and so he was backing his boss," but all of that is too easy and really doesn't let him off the hook.

I could say, "Because the anti-war folks are not really the base of the party; white union members, African Americans and women are the base, while we are the fringe of the base, and since he knew he was going to run, he could not cast a vote to appease that tiny sliver of the base because he would lose his shot at bringing in the larger base and everyone else," but that would be both too honest and apt to push you away from him even further.

In the end, support him or don't. I'll respect you either way, frankly, and hope that you will at a minimum work with Dean's group to affect a changing democracy in areas beyond this election.

21. How typical!
Selecting only part of a record is a well-known way to manipulate statistics to show how they support one's own opinion. To answer your question "If the record represents the man, why does the record end three years ago?"

It's hard to get liberal legislation passed when the Repukes control Congress, The White House, and the Supreme Court.

try again

25. I didn't deny his past record, I just commented that it's changed
over the last few years. I'm not making broad accusations, just stating fact. Even he hasn't been able to justift his votes on NCLB, the IRW and the Patriot Act to many people's satisfaction.

I think it's a valid issue.

May be a bit out of line, but this list doesn't seem to show great persuasive skills. A majority of these bills are held at desk or residing in someone's committee. Isn't that equivalent to the trash bin?

I really appreciate you putting Kerry's record straight, again. Sadly, it seems to fly right by those determined to spread the hate. Of course the most ridiculous spin is Nader's totally irresponsible tall tale that there's no difference between Democrats and Repukes. I can hardly believe I'm still seeing that drivel on DU. Those buying into it must be totally insulated from the devastation * has wrecked on this nation and the world. Must be nice.

17. Check Out The Kerry D-Bunker
http://blog.johnkerry.com/dbunker/archives/001332.html

John Kerry's Legislative Achievements

FICTION:
John Kerry doesn’t have any legislative accomplishments during his four Senate terms.

FACT:
John Kerry has a distinguished legislative record. He and John McCain negotiated an agreement with Vietnam to provide a full accounting for POW-MIAs. He wrote the first bill reducing acid rain. He has repeatedly led the charge in protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from drilling. He has passed legislation that shut down money laundering activities of terrorists and drug traffickers.

President Clinton Praised Kerry for Putting 100,000 Cops on the Street – “When we tried to get past six years of talking tough on crime but nothing happening, rhetoric and rhetoric and rhetoric and no action, to put 100,000 police on the street, to ban deadly assault weapons to pass the Brady bill, the other side, led the fight against it. But John Kerry helped us pass the toughest, smartest, best crime bill this country has seen in many a day, and the crime rate has gone down for four years in a row. John Kerry was on the right side of history.”

Democratic Leader Tom Daschle Says Kerry Knows How to Get the Legislative Job Done in the Senate - Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle had kind words for John Kerry’s work on Campaign Finance Reform when he asked Kerry to chair the Democratic Steering Committee: "From our teen-smoking bill to HMO reform and Campaign Finance Reform, John Kerry has demonstrated that he clearly knows how to get the job done. He is a valued and trusted member of our leadership team, and I am pleased he has accepted another term as Chairman of the Steering and Coordination Committee."

Even Dr. Bill Frist, Senate Majority Leader Says Kerry’s Global AIDS Legislation is a “Huge Step Forward”: “’The Kerry-Frist bill is a huge step forward,” said Frist. “It further validates U.S. leadership in the global effort to end devastation many countries face in the fight against HIV/AIDS’.”

58 bills and resolutions John Kerry has sponsored over the years have passed the U.S. Senate. Countless others have been improved because of his work, including the Clean Air Act, the Children’s Health Insurance Program and the COPS program.

The number of bills that bear your name is a poor measure of legislative accomplishment. For example, Ted Kennedy, who most would acknowledge as the most accomplished Democratic Senator in a generation, has had just 9 bills signed into law in 10 years. Of the more than 400 bills Kennedy sponsored in 108th, 105th and 104th Congresses none were signed into law. And Bill Frist, the Republican Majority Leader, has sponsored 88 bills in the 108th Congress and zero have become law. In the 107th Congress, Frist sponsored 52 bills and 1 became law. It was a bill to authorize and urge the President to promote democracy in Zimbabwe.

20. I'll spare you the ketchup bill...
though it might have been in your truly inspiring list.

The reason this get's raised is because people don't really associate Kerry with any particular piece of legislation. Example: McCain-Fienglod and Campaign finance

24. Cosponsors: (none) or Cosponsors: (very few)
What's up with that? With usually 50+ Democrat Senators at the time why does Kerry have so many Cosponsors: (none) on his record?

Could it be these bills were so perfect and forward-thinking that they went right over the heads of the rest of the Senate?

What's up with that?

28. The Meaningless of the Massive Information Dump.
I'm not saying Kerry didn't do anything as a senator. But if you can't fit it into a coherent, concise statement of what he stands for, it's not going to matter if he worked on 10,000 bills or 10 bills.

What people need to hear is what it says about what he cares about.
