“Don’t be fooled by this talk about speeches versus solutions,”
Political Memo

Obama Adding Detail to His Oratory

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — If he does say so himself, Senator Barack Obama delivers a fine political speech.

“Don’t be fooled by this talk about speeches versus solutions,” Mr. Obama told a crowd of Wisconsin voters. “It’s true, I give a good speech. What do I do? Nothing wrong with that.”

To that confident strain of self-assessment, the audience roared with approval.

<...>

And clearly the criticisms by Mrs. Clinton — and, not incidentally, by Senator John McCain of Arizona, the presumptive Republican nominee — that Mr. Obama is a candidate with more flash than substance is being taken as something of a warning shot.

Before Mrs. Clinton arrived Saturday evening in Wisconsin, appearing at the same state Democratic Party dinner in Milwaukee as Mr. Obama, she spent days criticizing her rival while campaigning in Ohio, where the primary is March 4. In city after city, she warned voters about politicians who offer oratory steeped with big promises but ultimately do not deliver.

“Speeches don’t put food on the table,” said Mrs. Clinton, of New York. “Speeches don’t fill up your tank, or fill your prescription, or do anything about that stack of bills that keeps you up at night.”

The long-distance message — “My opponent gives speeches; I offer solutions,” — clearly was heard here in Wisconsin. Barely hours after Mrs. Clinton introduced the line in Ohio, Mr. Obama had woven the words into his speech as a new punch line. (By contrast, he did not acknowledge the criticism from Mr. McCain, who said Mr. Obama’s speeches had been “singularly lacking in specifics.”)

Clinton says Obama lacks substance

By Caren Bohan Thu Feb 14, 2:44 PM ET

LORDSTOWN, Ohio (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton accused rival Barack Obama of lacking substance and experience on Thursday as she fought for political traction after a string of losses.

<...>

Brandishing a pair of blue boxing gloves given to her at a General Motors automobile plant, Clinton portrayed herself as a fighter and Obama as someone who makes a lot of speeches that sound good but do not offer solutions.

"That's the difference between me and my opponent. My opponent makes speeches. I offer solutions. It is one thing to get people excited. I want to empower you," the New York senator said.

<...>

"Now, over the years, you've heard plenty of promises from plenty of people in plenty of speeches. And some of those speeches were probably pretty good. But speeches don't put food on the table. Speeches don't fill up your tank, or fill your prescription, or do anything about that stack of bills that keeps you up at night," Clinton said.

But on this board there are now two big camps and one tried to use its superior numbers to ram through a big rule change and it backfired. That is funny.

18. Funny, I don't see any "backfiring". Sorry. I see some fairly ugly
posts, however.

Perhaps it is negative bullshit that is backfiring on both sides.

This reminds me of a joke.

What do you call 99 republicans and 1 Democrat at a brothel?

A bipartisan scandal.

There is seemingly nothing that can be thrown at this guy that he can't turn around into an advantage for his candidacy.

24. Charisma and more
Edited on Sun Feb-17-08 09:53 AM by ProSense
The Charisma Mandate:

The “cult of personality” is used in the pejorative. But recast as a different name — call it charisma — and, as Roosevelt and other examples show, it can be a critical element of politics and its practical cousin, governance. It just can’t be the only element.

“Today, attacks on the cult of personality seem really to mean attacks on the ability to make speeches that inspire,” Mr. Caro said in an interview. “But you only have to look at crucial moments in the history of our time to see how crucial it was to have a leader who could inspire, who could rally a nation to a standard, who could infuse a country with confidence, to remind people of the justice of a cause.”

<...>

By any definition, the charismatic leader emerges at a time of crisis or national yearning, and perhaps a vacuum in that nation’s institutions. Mr. Schlesinger wrote in 1960 of a “new mood in politics,” with people feeling “that the mood which has dominated the nation for a decade is beginning to seem thin and irrelevant.” There was, he wrote, “a mounting dissatisfaction with the official priorities, a deepening concern with our character and objectives as a nation.”

That might well describe the climate Obama supporters feel now.

Alan Wolfe, the director of the Boisi Center for Religion and American Political Life at Boston College, says Mr. Obama is simply — understandably — making an emotional appeal to those yearnings. “Politics is about policy, but it’s also about giving people some kind of sense of participating in a common venture with their fellow citizens,” Mr. Wolfe said.

22. A post of fact and substance, ProSense. What a contrast to the character smears!
:loveya:

Unlike some Jackasses here that think this is all a big game, you are keeping it real.

Your post shows that Obama and Clinton have worked together on solutions.
I would like to see a comparable list of Hillary sponsoring and Obama as co-sponsor - maybe a sincere motivated Clinton supporter could do a similar thing?

Anyone?
honest facts help those like me who will be voting in Texas real soon now...

This is what candidate support looks like!

29. Stephanie Tubbs Jones beat down of Texas State Senator incorporated into Hillary's speech
Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 11:10 AM by ProSense

Clinton targets Obama backer's botched interview

(CNN) – Hillary Clinton and her presidential campaign Wednesday pounced on a recent television interview with a surrogate of Barack Obama who was unable to identify a single accomplishment in the Illinois Democrat's Senate record.

"My good friend Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones from Ohio represented me on one of the TV programs in the last day or two— some of you may have seen her," Clinton said during a speech at Hunter College in New York City Wednesday. "And she was on against someone representing my opponent and for the first time, actually, the host, asked the representative of my opponent to name one accomplishment."

The interview in question was with Tubbs Jones and Texas State Sen. Kirk Watson on MSNBC Tuesday night. Host Chris Matthews asked Watson, a supporter Obama, to name the Illinois senator's chief legislative accomplishments.

"Well, I am not going to be able to name you specific items of legislative accomplishment," Watson said.

Asked if it was a problem he was unable to name any of Obama's accomplishments, Watson said, "Well no I don't think it is. Because I think one of the things that Sen. Obama does is he inspires. He's able to lay out a vision, he's able to lay out solutions."
