117. Nobody says you can't vote for your candidate. It's called a write in vote
That's what I plan on doing unless somehthing drastic happens.

I encourage others to do the same.

And yes, if everybody leaning Dem. followed their conscience it might lead to a McCain presidency.
But I will guarantee you, if everybody doesn't it will lead to a Clinton or Obama presidency.

I wrote a piece 'way back that there was a secret deal between Gore and the Clintons (Obama was not an anticipated significant player at the time).

It said basically that Bill and Hil talked to Al (it was at the Clinton Foundation fundraiser a couple of years ago) and said "why the hell aren't you running?" and he gave them the "fallen out of love with politics" and "toxic environment" arguments. They granted him that he'd been screwed over and understood why, with his new rockstar status, he'd be reluctant to wade into the fray. So they said Hillary would be a stalking horse; she'd run, take all the vitriol right up to the convention, lull the pugs into spending all their time planning an anti-Hillary campaign, and then she'd step aside and hand it to him.

The deal was that the best possible person to be the next POTUS would get the job, and the Clinton's would benefit from the ensuing period of good leadership. Bill could become some sort of roving ambassador, and Hil would probably get the Speakership. correction: Senate Majority Leader (buh-bye, Harry)

It was, as I said in the piece, a whimsical flight of fancy. It was before Hillary had even announced.

Funny how events seem to have sort of followed that forecast, to the point that it is at least being speculated upon now!

it says he would broker a deal...

that is, play the mediator - the deal could be to dub Biden, Richardson, Dodd, Edwards...

ya gotta wonder - was Edwards abrupt exit and subsequent lack of endorsing part of a deal?

I would gladly take a Biden POTUS, Edwards as AG (although Biden has spoken negatively of JRE, so that might be out) with Dodd, Gore, Richardson, both Clintons, and Obama all playing leadership roles.

Frankly, the three mentioned in previous pp who are sitting Senators would probably serve best by staying in Senate, but whatever.

Maybe the deal could be Biden as POTUS, Obama as VP (think 2020, Obamaites!), and Hillary as Majority Leader.

That would absolutely trump any negatives about Obama in foreign policy, and what many people are not aware of is that Joe's history of community legal work when just out of law school, quitting a big-lawfirm lucrative job to work in inner city, is pretty damned Obama-esque.

You want someone with HOPE? Go back and listen to Joe saying "Get Up!"

Ok, another foolish flight of fancy. But I feel better for having indulged myself.

Back to the real world... :)

137. I would be willing to bet...
...with the way Edwards left so abruptly and has yet to endorse either remaining Dem, that he made a deal with both of them that he would be the VP for whoever wins the nomination. This will likely be decided before the convention when he will support the front runner and give him or her his delegates.

There will be either an Obama/Edwards or Clinton/Edwards ticket. I would wager a decent sum on it.

54. Al Gore exposed Perot's private NAFTA monopoly on national television,
Perot thought it was good enough for him, just not the rest of the nation. Perot was never the same political force after that debate, had it been a fight they would've called it in the first round. That debate was consistent with Al Gore's championing opening up the Internet for the people while he was in Congress and as Vice-President, in both cases he was opposing monopoly. In the first case it was trade, in the second it was information, so in that sense you thank Al Gore for empowering you to promote your anti-Nafta message for all the world to see, unless of course you're a member of the corporate media.

One other point, Al Gore hasn't been in power since the very first days of 2000 and as such didn't have the opportunity to make any needed adjustments to NAFTA.

Gore took it to the Supreme Court.

No, he did not. Bush took it to the Supreme Court.

Gore didn't fight hard enough.

While you didn't say that, others have. He did everything he could without, as he saw it, bringing about a constitutional crisis.

104. Let's not forget that Al Gore fought hard for 35 long days.
He used all of the options that were available to him under Florida and Federal law.

He fought against the combined forces of Karl Rove, James Baker, Jeb Bush and Katherine Harris.

And all the while the MSM were demanding "closure" and the GOP were calling Gore a "Sore Loserman".

Democrats sat in front of their TVs while Republicans used physical force to disrupt the recounts in Florida.

Gore did not concede until December 12th, after the US Supreme Court had taken the decision to stop the recounts in Florida.

In fact he did not concede the election, but he did say that we accepted the Supreme Court's authority.

At that point in time, there were no other options open to Gore that would have changed the outcome.

Technically, he could have thought about having Congress challenge the Florida delegates, but after the Supreme Court ruling, and cosidering that the Republicans had a majority in both houses of Congress, it would not have changed the outcome.

Al Gore explained that he wanted to put the best interests of America before his own personal interests.

At the same time, he also made it clear that he strongly disagreed with the Supreme Court's rulings.

145. Rehnquist was in charge of the supreme court...
He would have had to argue the vote suppression to the same man who was actively involved in voter suppression in the 60's. You think that would have worked out any differently?

“When we arrived, the situation was tense. At that precinct I saw William Rehnquist, who was serving as the only Republican challenger (emphasis added). The FBI agent and I both showed our identifications to those concerned, including Mr. Rehnquist . . . The complaints did involve Mr. Rehnquist’s conduct. Our arrival and the showing of our identifications had a quieting effect on the situation and after interviewing several witnesses, we left. Criminal prosecution was declined as a matter of prosecutorial discretion . . .

“I have read the testimony and letter supplied by Justice Designate William Rehnquist to this committee in 1971 . . . He describes his role in the early 1960s as trying to arbitrate disputes at polling places. That is not what Mr. Rehnquist was doing when I saw him on Election Day in 1962.

Gore has won an Oscar, something that Reagan and Schwarzenegger haven't done. Maybe that would earn some crossover votes...

55. Not gonna happen, even if Al Gore wanted it to happen.
Al has made over $300 million since 2000. Do you want that IRS return made public?

He's great as elder statesman, but his standing is largely due to his NOT being involved in the nomination process. If he's smart, and he is, he'll stay out of it entirely.

65. Crap. Looks like I post too much.
In the last 24 hours, you have already posted three threads in the General Discussion: Primaries forum.

In an effort to limit the number of redundant, inflammatory and/or pointless topics posted in the General Discussion: Primaries (GDP) forum, we have instituted a limit on the number of discussion threads that any individual may post in this forum in a 24 hour period. Until the Democrats have a presumptive presidential nominee -- and perhaps longer -- no member may post more than three threads in this forum in any 24 hour period.

This change was proposed by the DU Administrators, and was supported by the vast majority of DU members when it was put to a vote. For more information, please see this post pinned to the top of the General Discussion: Primaries forum.

Here are links to the three discussion threads you posted in the GDP forum in the last 24 hours:

1. Remaining 2008 Primary Schedule: (Sun Feb 17th 2008, 08:11 PM)
2. It's Time for Obama and Clinton to Begin Planning Their Exits and to Endorse Al Gore. (Sun Feb 17th 2008, 06:27 PM)
3. GD:P (Sun Feb 17th 2008, 05:44 PM)

You will be eligible to post a new discussion thread in the General Discusion: Primaries forum at Mon Feb 18th 2008, 05:44 PM

and time and voters Obama managed to get out, Gore will come in and basically steal it from him. Gore knows what it's like to have an election stolen. I was really hoping for Gore a few months ago but now I would think of it as a theft. And to think all those who would vote for Obama would vote for Gore after this charade I think is a mistake.

93. This actually may happen according to DNC rules
In the event that no clear winner emerges after the delegates
and super-delegates are tallied, only then do the SUPER-DUPER
DELEGATES come into play (13 total). They choose the top 7
"electable" candidates based on a complicated fusion
of Tarot,Rock Paper Scissors, and excessive drinking. When the
last conscious person of the original 13 has a vision, the
candidate is formally chosen. This rule was enacted in 1997
ans a part of the official DNC irrational representation
initiative.

132. NAH. . .Gore's deafening silence changed my wish. . .
. .Gore had his chance, God only knows how much we pleaded, in 2007 to come to the rescue as a late entry.

NOW, all I wish for is a Gore endorsement for Obama. Then, Obama can pick with whom he fits best. . . one possibility is my other wish. . .VP Wesley K. Clark. . .THEN, McCain would sink like a rock.
So. . .

Obama family of supporters, keep your sails full as you tack into the primaries ahead

. . .then by June, how 'bout this ticket:

OBAMA / CLARK 2008
