If you think Obama is progressive ...
... then I have news for you.

We Illinois progressives sent Obama to the U.S. Senate, where he promptly joined the Joe Lieberman wing of the Democratic Party.

He’s not a progressive.
http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?ItemID=11936

But he’s a master at pretending to be one.

His economic advisers are very conservative, from the University of Chicago-Milton Friedman school of economics.
http://www.thenation.com/doc/20080211/fraser

My favorite economist, Paul Krugman, caught Obama using right-wing talking points on what to do about Social Security
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/16/opinion/16krugman.html

and about his health care plan.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/30/opinion/30krugman.html

His voting record is pro-business.
http://zmagsite.zmag.org/Feb2007/street0207.html

His voting record is pro-war.
http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?ItemID=12687

He glorifies American imperialism.
http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?ItemID=13396

He flip-flopped on the Palestinians and Israel, and now is AIPAC-approved.
http://www.motherjones.com/commentary/columns/2008/01/obamas-israel-shuffle.html

He has shown repeatedly what good friends he is with anti-gay African American preachers.
http://direland.typepad.com/direland/2007/11/obamas-anti-gay.html

He misuses history, according to a prominent historian.
http://hnn.us/roundup/entries/46866.html

He, uh, stretches the truth.

Example:

Trying to sound authentically African-American during a speech memorializing the forty-second anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights March at the Pettis Bridge in Selma, Obama claimed that his black (Kenyan) father and white (Kansan) mother married and conceived the future Barockstar because of the great Civil Rights struggles fought in Selma and Birmingham, Alabama… (Obama 2007).

Wow. Too bad Barack Obama Jr. was born in 1961, two years before the famous campaign to desegregate Birmingham, three years before the Civil Rights Act, and four years before the famous Selma march!

More on his “gaffes”.

His chief political adviser is a Daley machine strategist.

2. I don't really think
Obama is progressive, but I know that Hillary is not. Obama, however, is more likely to get anything of substance done (IMO).

31. He has no record to run on... even his claims of passed bills are found to be false
"Since 2003, executives and employees of Exelon, which is based in Illinois, have contributed at least $227,000 to Mr. Obama’s campaigns for the United States Senate and for president. Two top Exelon officials, Frank M. Clark, executive vice president, and John W. Rogers Jr., a director, are among his largest fund-raisers."

"Asked why Mr. Obama had cited it as an accomplishment while campaigning for president, the campaign noted that after the senator introduced his bill, nuclear plants started making such reports on a voluntary basis. The campaign did not directly address the question of why Mr. Obama had told Iowa voters that the legislation had passed."

likes of BAR and Krugman, both known Obama haters? I'm surprised you didn't throw a bit of Taylor Marsh or Larry Johnson in there.

http://www.majorityrules.org/blog/2007/03/senator-barack-obama-more-liberal-than.html

Senator Obama also has a higher liberal rating than any other Senator running for President this year. The National Journal has just released its 2006 annual ratings of Congress based on roll call votes on key economic, social and foreign policy issues.

When the New York Times political blog compared their lifetime scores they came up with the following ranking:

Senator Barack Obama......................84.3
Representative Dennis Kucinich........79.4
Senator Christopher J. Dodd .............79.2
Senator Hiliary Rodham Clinton ......78.8
Senator Joseph R. Biden, Jr...............76.8

12. NJ, which you cite, and which is a RIGHTWING RAG, rated him #1 Liberal
in 2007. OF THE ENTIRE SENATE. http://nj.nationaljournal.com/voteratings/

I only cite this rag to prove the point--you really should eschew it, its goal is to advance the GOP agenda.

Your cite, referring to the 2006 rating, is outdated.

They didn't do that because they were part of his CHEERLEADING squad--they wanted to taint him with the L word.

101. I am especially impressed by the resolution to congratulate the Chicago White Sox.
He probably had to do a lot of arm-twisting with that one. Uh-huh.

Does anyone know whether the State Legislature was heavily Democratic or Republican, and who his mentors were in the State Senate that might have guided Obama's hand in this illustrious cut-and-paste-until-your-eyes-glaze-over list?

64. Uh, most of those haven't gone anywhere, have they? You are missing my point, though.
Totally.

One. More. Time.

NJ didn't give him that rating to be NICE to him. They gave it to him to FUCK him.

Ted Kennedy is way more liberal than he is. But they gave him that Number One rating (after they changed their ranking criteria) so McCain can use in it an attack ad, should BO make it to the show.

NJ is a rightwing rag, and anyone who quotes them is quoting The Devil, frankly.

23. or maybe something more along...
the lines of the 'readers digest' on his environmental record?

Obama on the Issues
* Calls for cutting U.S. carbon dioxide emissions 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. Would accomplish this through a cap-and-trade system that would auction off 100 percent of emissions permits, making polluters pay for the CO2 they emit.

* Would channel revenue raised from auctioning emissions permits -- between $30 billion and $50 billion a year -- toward developing and deploying clean energy technology, creating "green jobs," and helping low-income Americans afford higher energy bills.

* Calls for 25 percent of U.S. electricity to come from renewable sources by 2025, and for 30 percent of the federal government's electricity to come from renewables by 2020.

* Proposes investing $150 billion over 10 years in R&D for renewables, biofuels, efficiency, "clean coal," and other clean tech.

* Calls for improving energy efficiency in the U.S. 50 percent by 2030.

* Calls for 36 billion gallons of biofuels to be used in the U.S. each year by 2022 and 60 billion gallons of biofuels to be used in the U.S. each year by 2030.

* Calls for all new buildings in the U.S. to be carbon neutral by 2030.

* Calls for reducing U.S. oil consumption by at least 35 percent, or 10 million barrels a day, by 2030. Introduced the Health Care for Hybrids Act, which would have the federal government help cover health-care costs for retired U.S. autoworkers in exchange for domestic auto companies investing at least 50 percent of the savings into production of more fuel-efficient vehicles.

* Supports raising fuel-economy standards for automobiles to 40 miles per gallon and light trucks to 32 mpg by 2020.

* Supports a phaseout of incandescent light bulbs by 2014.

* Cosponsor of the Boxer-Sanders Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act, the most stringent climate bill in the Senate.

* Cosponsor of the Coal-to-Liquid Fuel Promotion Act. After being badgered by MoveOn and other progressives over the issue, he "clarified" his position by saying he would support liquefied coal only if it emitted 20 percent less carbon over its lifecycle than conventional fuels.
to work my hardest to make happen."

Obama's environmental activism stretches back to his undergrad days at Columbia University, during which he did a three-month stint with a Ralph Nader offshoot organization trying to convince minority students at City College in Harlem to recycle. Later, when he worked as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago, he fought for lead abatement in the Altgeld Gardens neighborhood.

After getting a law degree from Harvard, Obama became a civil-rights lawyer and then in 1996 was elected to the Illinois state senate, representing the 13th district on Chicago's South Side, where he distinguished himself as a leader on environmental and public-health issues. In 2003, Obama was one of six state senators to receive a 100 Percent Environmental Voting Record Award from the Illinois Environmental Council.

His efforts on behalf of the environment have been so consistent and comprehensive, in fact, that LCV and the Sierra Club endorsed Obama in his bid for Congress this year over half a dozen other Democrats competing in the primary. Last month, the LCV named him a 2004 Environmental Champion, one of 18 sitting and prospective members of Congress to receive the award.

Obama is "by far one of the most compelling and knowledgeable politicians on the environment I've ever sat in a room with," Mark Longabaugh, senior vice president for political affairs at LCV, told Muckraker. "I've been playing national politics for more than 20 years and I quite literally can't remember one person I've met -- even on a national level -- who was more in command of facts, more eloquent, and more passionate on these issues than Sen. Obama."

Obama's commitment to environmental protection has a personal component: His six-year-old daughter, Malia, has chronic asthma, a fact he often cites when defending the long list of initiatives he has pushed to clean up smog and air pollution in his state. And many of his constituents suffer from the same condition. "More people die from asthma attacks in Chicago than anywhere else in the country," said Brian Urbaszewski, director of environmental health programs for the American Lung Association of Metropolitan Chicago. "And Illinois has the highest African-American death rate from asthma in the country -- four times the national average."

This year, Obama made an aggressive move to stem the tide of pollution from Illinois' coal plants -- which produce nearly 50 percent of the state's electricity -- by introducing a bill that would in effect block the Bush administration's rollback of the Clean Air Act's new-source review rules from being carried out in his state. "This is a very complex issue, but Obama took it by storm," Urbaszewski told Muckraker. "He dove headfirst into all the complexities and wouldn't quit until he had a solution."

According to Jack Darin, who, as director of the Sierra Club's Illinois chapter, has worked with Obama closely on these issues, "He's an incredibly quick study. He's not a scientist, but remarkably adept at analyzing the details of complex environmental issues, asking the right questions, and ultimately making the right policy decision for public interest."

To build support for cleaner air, Obama opened a dialogue with the coal-mining industry about how better pollution controls on power plants could help create new markets for Illinois coal. Most of the coal now being burned in Illinois comes from Wyoming and other Western states, which has hurt the Illinois coal industry. But Illinois coal is cleaner in terms of pollutants such as mercury. Obama argued that cracking down on mercury pollution from coal-fired plants would give Illinois coal a competitive advantage over Western coal.
--------------------------------------------------------
And Obama is making energy independence one of the top three priorities in his campaign for a seat in the U.S. Senate, according to his spokesperson, Robert Gibbs. He has pledged to endorse legislation that would require 20 percent of America's power supply to be generated by renewable sources by 2020, as well as regulations that would boost Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards to 40 miles per gallon for cars.

The list doesn't stop there. Obama has fought for tougher standards on diesel engines, waged battles against urban sprawl and the destruction of Illinois' wetlands, and mobilized residents in Chicago's lowest-income neighborhoods to block toxic dumping in their communities.

It's particularly notable that Obama has gone out on a political limb to advance environmental protections. "Illinois is a heavily industrial state, and a tough place for environmentalists and other progressives," said Darin. "Illinois is a state that has no limits on campaign financing, meaning the special interests are well entrenched." But Obama has never capitulated, said Darin, and for most of his time in the state senate, he has been in the minority, arguing against the political grain with surprising success.

32. No, it isn't that at all. They didn't mean it nicely. Didn't you read what I wrote?
Here, let MM break it down for you:

http://mediamatters.org/items/200802060001?f=s_search

Read the links. Please. Actually click on them and see what MM has to say about this whole mess.

The NJ wants to use this rating AGAINST the candidate. It's not a compliment.

FWIW, Obama's record on the environment isn't as sunny as your links suggest. He's entrenched with the coal lobby. Clean coal is still coal. Nuke power has its own issues and he's wrapped up there, too. But I'm uninterested in a debate on that whole 'environmental' score--my purpose is simply to make it clear to you beyond a shadow of a doubt that they weren't trying to HELP Obama with this rating.

24. That is amazing Obama is considered more liberal
when Hillary has voted along the Democratic
Party lines at a higher percentage rate than
he has. Granted it is in the .5 - .6 range but
it is still more. Liberal is not necessarily the
Democratic Party's total stance on all issues.

37. Actually, no.
They're just the ones germane to the discussion.

Progressive Punch finds Obama on the same level with Lieberman.

43 80.84 76.02 88.37 Obama, Barack D IL

44 80.15 74.87 76.55 Lieberman, Joseph I. I CT

I have plenty more reasons why Obama isn't the best choice for Democratic candidate for president, if you'd like to see them.

61. The "likes" of Krugman?
So Krugman is some sort of low-life because he doesn't endorse your candidate? Krugman has been speaking about Bush's lousy policies for years-this is particularly valuable coming from an economist. Economists are typically conservative in their views. People like Galbraith and Krugman are the exception not the rule.

I respect Senators Kerry and Kennedy even if I disagree with their endorsement of Obama.

80. That's what the MSM *wants* you to think
If you ask people about issues--Iraq, health care, environmental policy, economic policy, foreign policy, etc.--large majorities--55%, 65%, 85% and up--support positions that are called "far left" (single-payer health care, for example, or paying more in taxes to protect the environment, or impeaching Bush and Cheney) by the MSM (not to mention the DLC or Congressional leaders). There are very reputable polls on this that I don't have time to find right now. Thom Hartmann and Ed Schulz talked a lot about this when Edwards' and Kucinich's campaigns were going south, and regarding Congress's inaction on impeachment.

Mainstream American voters are to the left of ALL of our Presidential candidates, except for (maybe) Kucinich.

They don't THINK of themselves as "progressives," or "liberals" or "the far-left" because the MSM has consistently demonized those terms (and those policies) going all the way back to McGovern and before. (Of course, they aren't "far-left" at all because the United States has made being truly far-left the equivalent of treason ever since McCarthy and J. Edgar Hoover.)

You'd never know that EISENHOWER (Republican, btw) supported things like higher taxes on the wealthy, stronger unions and laws to support them, access to affordable health care, welfare for the poor, government subsidies to make higher-ed affordable to all, higher corporate taxes, etc., etc. That's because those positions have all been labeled "lefty," "liberal," or "un-American" by the neo-right wing corporate media and the politicians they support. And he advocated those policies during the supposed "golden age" of the 1950's that Reagan purported to "take us back" to. Never mind that his policies reversed all of those in place at the time (started by FDR's New Deal) that made the strong middle class and prosperous economy of that decade possible.

THAT'S the ONLY reason why someone folks on DU would find "progressive enough" wouldn't stand a chance at being elected. Because the corporate-controlled politicians and media have so completely brainwashed people that they don't even know how progressive they are.

It continues today, with right wing rags cited above telling us how "liberal" Obama is, and Rush Limbaugh telling us for the last 16 years that Hillary Clinton has a "radical liberal agenda" that she just can't wait to "impose" on all of us freedom-loving Americans.

God Bless the Corporate States of America!

7. Even if all of that is to be trusted...
Who cares if he uses a republican talking point here or there. It's not about appeasing the Democrats just as its not about appeasing the Republicans (for those who try to), is about a new approach which, clearly, a lot of people on this blog seem to not understand.

And I guess Hillary and McCain have never done such things, and one or both are so much better than Obama. I'm positive I can find a laundry list of things both Hillary Clinton and John McCain have said which would confuse or anger you.

I am a young person, and I'm telling you this endless attack business has to stop if we want true progress in this country. Progressive means that, and just because Obama extrapolates that to mean something slightly different than you doesn't mean he is disingenuous, lying, or wrong.

Obama is the best hope our country and party have to turn this country around. It's not going to take a Clinton or a McCain to do it. And I'm not saying Obama is guaranteed to succeed either, but at least he isn't a loser walking in the door next January like the other two.

Stop being partisan, gain a little more perspective, otherwise EVERY YOUNG PERSON IN THIS COUNTRY WILL TURN THEIR BACKS ON NOT ONLY PAST GENERATIONS, BUT ON THIS COUNTRY.

Obama '08....cause he is the only candidate, PERIOD, I would vote for.

9. I'm an Edwards supporter
Edited on Sun Feb-17-08 03:14 PM by Sarah Ibarruri
I wanted Edwards, not H. Clinton and not B. Obama. From the start, the media shut Edwards out. After Edwards left the race, I was hurt and angry that the media had done this to Edwards, but I had to move on. I looked at both H. Clnton and B. Obama and was not fully satisfied with either. Neither was saying what Edwards did. However, I chose Obama. I cannot say as a "favorite" over Hillary Clinton. I chose him because this country is so depressed, so frustrated, and has been done so much wrong by the Republican Revolution, that even if we get a Democrat in the White House, the changes necessary to bring it BACK to what it was before the Republicans shat on it, will require ALL OF US.

Obama has a gift. It is the gift of being able to give people hope. Without hope you can't mobilize people.

And so, without Edwards, I guess I suppose I want Obama because we have to do HOUSECLEANING to remove the REPUBLICAN STENCH this country has, and without speeches of HOPE, speeches of MOBILIZATION, and speeches that get all of us off our asses to get INVOLVED and fix everything about this country that the REPUKES destroyed, it won't get done.

dennis and john were selected by the msm to be silenced and they gave us clinton and obama. it`s a choice between these two then who is the most progressive? since i feel hillary is not a progressive and never was that leaves barrack. barrack in my opinion at least understands that the people must be included in the process. if that`s the only thing we get that`s more than we would get from hillary and we`d get nothing from the rethugs. for the progressives it`s not much of a choice but it`s better than nothing.

by the way i voted for dennis during the primary.

25. I am under no illusions about either Barack or Hill. You seem to be though.
I see the choice as between a newly minted corporatist and a life long corporatist.

I know Hill wants nothing to do with the grass roots. It was the same in 1993 as it is today.

Obama, on the other hand, came up through the grass roots, and turned down many opportunities to go for the big bucks to instead do socially redeemable work for much of his adult life. He did community organizing, he taught constitutional law, he worked for the PIRGs, he did civil rights law.

Hill went straight to work for a major corporate law firm, sat on Wal-Mart and other boards, did land speculation deals for big investors, etc.

Obama has released his tax returns to democratic primary voters while Hill has refused. This raises a red flag for me. Hill says she will release them once it's too late for Democratic voters to vet them, ie after she gets the nomination. I won't vote for that. You can if you wish.

I notice all your writing is geared toward negatives about Obama. You and I both know that for every Obama negative there is at least one if not more Clinton negatives, as far as progressives are concerned. So I'm left with the impression that your support for Hill is strictly based on, as a female DUer wrote, the fact that Hillary is "the vagina candidate."

That's fine, and we all have our own reasons for choosing the candidate we do. I would find it more intellectually honest if you would just come out and say that.

If my impression is incorrect, then I apologize. I have read a few of your Obama hit pieces, but none I recall extolling the "fact" that in your opinion Hill is not in favor of empire, that Hill is not a hawk, that Hill is not an Elitist who doesn't much like ot trust the grass roots, that Hill in fact has anything to recommend her to progressives over Obama besides being the vagina candidate.

Here's an editorial piece written by David Swanson that pretty well sums up my opinion on this contest.
http://www.davidswanson.org/?q=node/1089

I also happen to believe that Obama will be much better for the party as a whole, both in terms of defeating McCain and in terms of coat tails for all our other candidates. We know the former Clinton Presidency was hell for the party. The 17 state strategy was very good for the Clintons but awful for Democrats. In fact, Hill's campaign is now in a deep hole partly because of that same failed strategy. Also, it's no secret that the Clintons would axe Howard Dean first chance the get. I don't like that.

Just comparing campaigns, it appears to me that Obama is by far the best executive material between the two of them. His campaign will go down in the history books as a brilliant and well organized success, and Hill's campaign will go down as an example of wasted opportunities, poorly appropriated expenditures, and poorly organized.

So it's not that Obama is my first choice, he isn't, but he is my last choice. I can vote for him and against the DLC - two birds with one stone, so to speak.

I vote on June 3rd, and my state (MT) will go to Obama. Obama has a shot at this state in the GE. Hillary has zero shot at this state in the GE. I believe that is also true for a number of other states as well.

There is a noisy minority at DU that continues to diss Obama every chance they get. But it's getting tiresome. The pattern is always the same. They cherry pick any opinion piece that they can find that is critical of Obama. Yet they completely ignore the voluminous amount of commentary which takes a pro Obama stance.

I would have a lot more respect for someone who posts a balanced commentary that looks at both sides of the argument. Then it won't simply come off as shilling for Senator Clinton.

Actually, the prologue and Chapter 1, "Republicans and Democrats".. and you can decide for yourself. Obama wrote it (not a ghost writer) and you can read it if you want.

83. Good lord! Neither one of them is a progressive!
Let's get over that now. We screwed up and let true progressives go. If you wanted a progressive, then you would have voted for Kucinich.

That's history now.

What we have is what we have. Hillary or Obama. Not a dime's worth of difference between the two, ok?

So the only thing we really need to think about is who can win in November. An objective analysis indicates that Obama has a much better chance of beating McCain in November.

All of the name calling and detailed policy analysis means crap. Obama can beat McCain and Hillary can't.

It sucks. That's life. Welcome to America, land of the foolish right-leaning moderate faux-progressives.

Sorry to be so cynical, but the whole silly anti-Obama/anti-Hillary bullshit has finally put me over the edge. From a progressive standpoint they both suck, ok? Now we move to pragmatism. Who can win and at least not have us subjected to the really sucky GOP for four more years.

Obama.

95. what an insulting comment
stating the fact that obama is not a progressive, by any stretch of the imagination, is in no way comparable to "lynching".

88. Excellent post
He's no progressive. IF he wins, I can't wait to see all his supporters little heads twist around when he is more of the same. "But, but, but you said 'change'. 'Yes we can', remember?" It will be so much fun, I kinda hope he does win.

91. What a crook
Again this is the best this country can do - the remaining candidates are NOT anything the people of this country need. They're ALL so far removed from us and in the pockets of the Powers-That-Be and yet we'll have idiots put all our hopes that somehow a turd will turn into a flower. Well, good luck.

I'd like to see this sight 6 months after the election (if we even have one - but that's another story) when we're STILL in Iraq and neck deep into a DEPRESSION. Will you be still be singing the praises of whatever corporate shill is running this country?

My guess is we'll be feeling just we did after the 06' elections when we were stabbed in the back by the same bunch of liars that are lying to us now.

93. you sound so desperate
you parroting of anti-obama rhetoric from hand pick articles is impressive. you support you argument with the opinion pieces of others and proclaim them to be facts. bravo. rather than doing smear piece, why don't you at least try to go positive about your candidate? How bout actually dropping the politics of fear or at least get homeland security on-board and get them to change the colors every-time Obama wins a contested state. Its a shame how well you articulate your point, yet use that same ann coulter style. I am favoring obama, I would like to be comfortable voting hillary in the GE. As the thread lengthens your arguments grow more desperate and unsatisfying. So tell me what hillary can do for me, how can my life be better if i vote for her? I admit thus far from what i have seen my only option is to close my eyes and cast my vote for her when GE time comes. I want to be able to do it with them open.

99. "His voting record is pro-War." What's your point?
Since there are two candidates in the race, I assume a post knocking one is meant to advance the other (because the only other possibility is that you think we should all just sit at home with our heads in our hands, bemoaning the fate of the progressive cause). So, between Obama and Clinton on war - and just about any other subject you mention - I'll take Obama.
