Reasons why my friend says I should vote for Hillary
Honest to God, the reasons listed below are the reasons why I should switch my vote from Obama to Clinton:

(1) Women have to work twice as hard to be just as good as a man, so you know Hillary has to campaign twice as hard.

(2) Barack has had everything just handed to him. Hillary has had to work for everything! (Here is generally where I say something like "Oh, so Harvard just gives someone the Editor of the Law Review position, all Barack had to do was ask for it?")

(3) Barack has been privileged his whole life. His father went to Harvard. His mother went to Harvard. (Ok, here is where my friend went off the rails...I pointed out it was Barack who worked his way through Havard LAW School & his parents actually went to the University of Hawaii.)

But wait, there's more:

(4) It's Hillary's turn. Barack is too young, too inexperienced. He hasn't done anything for anyone, but Hillary has done everything for women, including the dishes & windows. (Okay, I made the dishes & windows thing up, but since when do we "take turns" being President like we "take turns" riding shotgun in Mom's station wagon?)

(5) Barack is young. He can run again in 8 years. This is Hillary's only chance. (This is about the time I point out that all of these reasons are focused on Hillary, not what's best for the country; funny arguments coming from people who argue that Barack has no substance.)

(6) Think of all those 80 year old women who are just wanting to see a woman President before they die! (Were those 80 year old ladies thinking of me or anyone else when they voted for Bush?)

But the piece de resistance:

(7) If Hillary isn't elected our nominee & become President, we will NEVER have a woman President, ever ever ever. (At this point, I tell my friend that for the sake of our friendship, we'd best not talk until after March 4 because as a woman, I find this incredibly offensive.)

4. There are a lot of good reasons to vote for Hillary - but none of those are it.
What the fucking fuck?

:wtf:

That's the same kind of ignorant, bizarre logic that the freepers and other rightwing evangelical filth like to use.

(oh, and those are actually reasons your friend offers for why you should vote for Hillary, not reasons why your friend says you should vote for Hillary - the only reason I can think of that your friend says you should vote for Hillary is that he has a bizarre sense of logic).

I hardly think he'd qualify his youth as privileged.

6. I did not see one consideration about what is best
for the country in any of those reasons.

I would say, that your friend is looking at Hillary through her own Hillary-colored glasses and not at the large scheme of things. It seems as though being President is some sort of star role in a movie.

7. Do Me A Favor: Tell Your Friend That OPERATIONMINDCRIME Says She Needs To Pick Better Friends.
Because from my point of view, a decent friend would never rush to a message board to mock and attempt to humiliate their friend's point of view. Course, that's if this story is even true at all.

To each their own reasons for siding with a candidate. We may think there should be far deeper reasons for choosing a candidate, but her heart still seems in totally the right place. Why come to a public message board to mock her? Yeah, what a great friend you are. So do me a favor and give her my message, ok?

15. One, I Don't Believe It.
Two, I could never in a million years imagine racing to DU to post something so petty about a friend of mine, just to make them look bad or stupid. I find it disgusting.

Now granted, there can be times a righteous rant about a friend is called for and warranted, and done with the best intentions at heart. Be under no illusion, this is NOT one of those threads. This thread is petty and designed just to get accolades as well as try and make her friend look dumb. Sorry, but I don't respect that one damn bit.

Furthermore, it has nothing to do with being the thought or post police and it's a bit disingenuous of you to categorize it as such. It's a message board, and on message boards you post opinions. I posted mine. Get over it.

44. The OP Was Condescending. Please Don't Be Such A Selective Hypocrite.
If you're blind to that, you're blind to that.

My post wasn't about condescension. It was about respecting our friends more, which is something all of us should support.

I will readily admit that I may have been a bit harsh on the OP. But what I also know, is that if any of my friends posted something similar, it would bother me a little. If you stumbled across one of your friends posting something like this about you, it would probably bother you a little too. Friends are supposed to support each other and accept each other's shortcomings. I'm a big believer in that. I'm a big supporter in defending your friends and sticking by them, as opposed to posting condescending things about them on public forums. There's the internet, and there's real life. Real life should be far more valuable than an internet message board. Friends are real life. My condescension towards an anonymous poster on a message board in which I do not know, is far less of a violation than condescension towards a real life friend.

21. So it's ok for Clinton supporters to mock Obama supporters
and call them members of a cult, etc, because they are only acting out of emotion, can't state policy reasons for their support, believe in some silly little idea like "hope", but when I post a real-life example of a Clinton supporter doing the same thing, all of a sudden it's a bad thing?

Besides, had I left out the part about this being an actual conversation (& apart from the dishes & windows, my responses to her were what I posted here), you would have said I was making it all up.

I consider WolverineDG a friend, and she is a damned good Democrat to boot. Show me a person who has never used the internet to vent abouot frustration with a friend or family member, and I'll show you a liar, a newbie, or a loner. WGD is an asset to DU, to Texas, and to any campaign she chooses to support. To so flippantly decide to denigrate her is just plain ignorant.

Edited on Sun Feb-17-08 08:57 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
So what her friend feels that way. SO FUCKING WHAT. And based on the tone and some of the wording in the OP, it wasn't about posting it with integrity, but instead partially posting it as a MOCKERY of her friend and almost attempting to humiliate her friend as if she's oh so ignorant or something.

Well sorry, you can defend whoever you want and hold whatever opinion you choose, but I for one would NEVER want friends like that in my life. Think about it: If her friend stumbled in here right now and read the OP, do you think her feelings might be hurt? Even just a little? If your friend posted something about you in the tone of the OP, don't you think YOU'D be bothered just a little? Maybe?

Sorry, but true friends don't do shit like that. At least not in my circle. Maybe I just expect a bit more out of my friends though.

18. By the numbers:
1) Used to be true...still true to a much more moderated extent. Women are still at a disadvantage professionally in the U.S., but it's much less of an issue than it was even 10 years ago.

2) Want to talk about having things handed to you? How about the genesis of your political clout being a husband that was the President?

3) Obama doesn't come from money. He had advantages, but I don't believe anything was "handed" to him.

4a) This isn't a game of Parchesi. There is no such thing as "taking your turn". 4b) HRC has been playing the experience card (to the extent of claiming "35 years of experience"). What "experience" was she gaining in law school when she was 25 years old? 4c) Yes, HRC has "worked for women"...so have many others.

5) Not true. In 4 years, HRC will be 64. John McCain is 71 years old. The American people, in today's atmosphere, obviously have no problem supporting a candidate in their 60's or 70's.

6) Think of all of those 80-year-old blacks who are just wanting to see a black President before they die.

7) Bullshit. Political power has been increasingly flowing away from old white guys for quite a while now. There's no evidence that will stop. Taken to its logical conclusion, the same can be said for having a black President..."If Obama doesn't win, we'll NEVER have a black President, ever, ever, ever".

HRC doesn't want to play the gender card becase it opens the door to play the race card....and the race card will get a lot more mileage.

38. Wolverine - I have had similar conversations
With one friend, we were able to have a great ongoing discussion. As hard as it is for her to give up on a woman becoming president this time around, she is not happy with Hillary's tactics or voting record once she started investigating the facts. That and her 10 year old is excited about Obama. When was the last time we had a viable candidate that the youth got excited about?

Another friend got pissed because Obama had a commercial about health care and he feels Obama stole Hillary's issue. He didn't appreciate it when I pointed out that neither Clinton or Obama were talking about health care until Edwards forced them to. But the real surprise was the anger at the fact that Clinton is being challenged.

I am not going to vote for someone because of the color of their skin, their gender or their religion. I too find the argument that either Barack or Clinton are the better candidate because of those traits.

It's very disheartening when an honest disagreement turns into an issue in a friendship. I hope you and your friend are able to communicate again after March 4. And I hope the DUers who jumped your shit because they disagree with you lose their anger too. I joined DU in 2004 after the primaries were over, but read that things got really difficult here for a while. I think that's a shame. We all came here because we share some core beliefs. We should build on that, not tear each other down.

42. DG, your are obviously too smart for this
I know you're smart and I know you can counter argue every one of these reasons back to your friend. So the only decision you have to make is how much time do you want to invest in changing your friend's mind or just accepting her/his decision.

I think your last comment about the cooling period until March 4th, may not be a bad idea if you want to keep your friend. Decisions like these are sometimes emotional too, with neither side willing to give at all. If you think it is best, tell your friend that you should both agree to disagree in order to remain friends.

You and I both strong feminists, and no one is going to convince me that voting for Barack now, will keep a woman out of the White House. In fact I think that Hillary's campaign this year will inspire more women to move up to the challenge.

Sonia
