You just can't trust Hillary on NAFTA - Letters to Editor OH Newspaper

...or anything else really a corp democrat says, but we all know this on this forum right.

Can’t pin NAFTA on Bush

EDITOR:

I watched Hillary’s speech from Lordstown, and I think she should have saved that performance for an airplane, where barf bags are plentiful.

Who does she think she’s fooling? She had the audacity to blame George Bush for “ Chinese steel coming here and our jobs going there.” Maybe she forgot that it was her husband who signed the NAFTA agreement, not George W. Bush. Remember the warning about “that giant sucking sound would be the sound of American jobs heading elsewhere?” Bill didn’t get it. And evidently Hillary didn’t either.

All of you who have a loved one who lost his or her job to Mexico, China, India and elsewhere can thank your pals the Clinton’s. Look, I know that President Bush has done a lot of damage to this country and generally has been an embarrassment to the nation. But I find Hillary’s audacity in blaming President Bush for her own husband’s screw-ups offensive.

If you believe for one moment that the Clinton’s care about you or this Valley, I have a bridge to sell you and you’re obviously gullible enough to buy it. The Democrat’s of this Valley have a real opportunity. You finally have a candidate who even Republican’s can trust and respect. Barack Obama. Let’s wash away the dirt of the past 16 years and start fresh.

S.A. FERRELL

4. If she's going to run on her husband's record...
she has to take the good with the bad. I suppose it's a step forward that she realizes NAFTA is not so good, though - and I still think she'd correct the mistake, even if she hasn't taken any responsibility for the decision.

6. The #1 reason I cannot vote for her
I wonder if we will get these candidates on the record with HB-1 Visas. Bernie Sanders has a bill to limit them as I'm sure some of you know.

28. Thanks for the links
that confirms what I already thought. I hope Obama is not sucking up to this crowd too. He says he wants to stop tax breaks to outsourcers, but sometimes I wonder if he truly gets it. If he truly gets that we want good jobs and for the good of the country we've got to keep high paying jobs here and create new high paying jobs. From his speaches, it's possible to draw the conclusion that he gets that but he never comes out and says quite what I want to hear on this subject. Hillary is firmly in the "we're going to piss all over you, but here's an umbrella" camp.

7. I have to disagree with this.
In 1992 Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, the American President George Bush Senior and Mexican President Salinas signed a free trade agreement called NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement). It took effect 1994.

22. And how it was passed -- An Unholy alliance between Clinton and Delay
Bill Clinton and Tom Delay set aside their differences and joined forces in a full-court press to get support for NAFTA and sway opponents in both parties to get with the program.

13. But NAFTA was ratified under Clinton, and Clinton did push for its ratification.
In the United States, NAFTA was able to secure passage after Bill Clinton made its passage a major legislative priority in 1993.

During that election cycle Ross Perot distinguished himself from the other candidates with strong opposition. Clinton triangulated on GHW Bush and, as the DLC leaned toward neo-liberal economics anyway, supported the treaty.

14. Correct. it was George H. W. Bush and Brian Mulroney and
discussions really started with Reagan and Mulroney. I suspect it started when they got together to sing a duet "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling". Also NAFTA is the North American Free Trade Agreement, U.S., Mexico and Canada; China did not enter into this agreement.

18. I'm one of those people
Edited on Mon Feb-18-08 10:09 AM by OnionPatch
who lost jobs to outsourcing and cheap foreign labor. In fact, I've had to retrain twice now. First, my factory job was gone to Japan (steel...years ago) and recently my IT job has gone to India. Luckily, I was able to stay on in an administrative position but for how long....how many freakin' times do I have to retrain? And how do I know that the job I retrain for is going to stay here? That India speech is what keeps me from supporting Hillary. Now I hear her expressing sympathy for those who lost jobs, but what is her plan to help us? More education? For crying out loud, I'm almost fifty years old and I have to go back to college again? :eyes: (Edited to add: most of the college help offered seems to be aimed at young college students, which is great, but where is the help for retraining working adults? I can't go to college full time, which leaves me ineligible for most college aid.)

With Barack's Wall Street donations? Really?

There were two that weren't. Unfortunately, one was short and the other, well, wasn't Barack or Hillary. So we get to choose between the two.

29. A bit off-topic, but who edits this paper
"Clinton's" is not the plural of Clinton
I've worked at a copy desk a few times. That should have been fixed before it went to print.

As for the substance of the letter, she's 100% right
