Dean and some Dean supporters relying on "blatant falsehoods" to win?
Edited on Wed Dec-31-03 05:48 PM by wyldwolf
We've seen examples:

Dean claiming to the only anti-war candidate.

Dean claiming to be the only candidate from a farm state.

Now we have fabrications about other democratic candidates from DU:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=47006&mesg_id=47006&page=

But this is ok to do, apparently:

Also, there's no rule against making stuff up on DU - the rules state, "Democratic Underground, LLC, does not have a policy of checking the veracity of messages posted by users of our discussion board. Use discretion when evaluating unsubstantiated claims." Therefore it's up to the members to post to prove or disprove any claims that are posted here - they just have to avoid personally attack people while they're doing it.

However, crediting the fabrication to a known source like CNN borders on libel.

Might this put DU in hot water?

1. "Dean claiming to be the only candidate from a farm state."
You have a source for this claim?

6. Only one, teeny, tiny problem:
DEAN didn't say it--- a CNN announcer did.

10. Only one teeny tiny problem with your problem: Dean DID say it
http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&scoring=d&edition=us&q=Nobody+else+comes+from+a+farm+state&btnG=Search+News

Dean (D-VT), according to the Post-Crescent in Wisconsin, said, "I understand farm issues. Nobody else comes from a farm state."

7. Let me define "source"
Edited on Wed Dec-31-03 05:54 PM by HFishbine
An unsubstantiated claim in a DU post is not a source.

(on edit: And what Padraig18 notes above is not insignificant either.)

2. "Dean claiming to the only anti-war candidate."
Please view this video of a Dean campaign event in Iowa on Sunday. Dean gives Kucinich props, saying, "Of all the people running from congress, only Dennis Kucinich had the courage to vote against the war."

It's at 18:34: rtsp://video.c-span.org/project/c04/c04122803_dean.rm

8. When was the video made as compared to when Dean made his statement?
If Dean admits the truth now, that doesn't erase the past when he knew better.

12. Let me get this straight....
if somebody posts something negative about Dean, no matter how true, you're entitled to be enraged, nasty, and indignant.

But if somebody makes up a totally fabricated slam against Clark, and WE object, we're too serious and we're supposed to laugh it off.

It doesn't work that way. Most people figure that out by the time they reach adolescence.

9. Dean is reckless has a hard time with the truth...
Seems like when he speaks he then has to clarify what was said. We know what was said and we know what was meant.

In my opinion the Dean campaign will be the downfall of the Democratic 2004 election if he receives the nomination.

11. Another one.. Yesterday I heard that during hin say while on..
his tour of the south; 'the democrats have long taken the African American voters for granted. He's the ONLY one, not taking them for granted.' Then today I read that he attended some churches in the south where the majority of the attendees were white. His campaign said that they will rely on the local organizers to coordinate and campaign to African American voters. :wtf:

My post in ATA that you're referencing covers this. If you see something that you consider to be a "blatant falsehood," you may certainly post a response to counter it. That's one of the purposes of a discussion board, surely. But starting a thread to suggest that DU might get into trouble because something somebody said about something that may or may not have been on CNN "borders on libel" is certainly inflammatory. If you want to discuss this issue, please keep it in the original thread.

By the way, it wasn't elad who posted that message in ATA. That's, um, a blatant falsehood.
