Al Sharpton does not own Obama or Hillary. Hillary is there becasue she's chosen to be there. Barack is not there, though he is obviously beloved. Al Sharpton has no authority of where they do or do not show up. For people who hate Sharpton, you all give him so much power.

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- The annual State of the Black Union forum boasted a number of famous attendees in New Orleans on Saturday, but this year's event received much more attention for who wasn't there.

Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-New York, was the only major presidential candidate to accept an invitation to attend.

Her rival, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, declined, as did Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

But it's Obama's absence that's prompted both controversy and a backlash against Tavis Smiley, the organizer of the event who has openly criticized Obama's decision.

In a letter to Smiley earlier this month, Obama commended the forum for addressing important issues, but explained he needed to focus on his presidential run ahead of the critical March 4 primaries.

"In the final stretch, I will be on the campaign trail every day in states like Ohio, Texas and Wisconsin talking directly with voters about the causes that are at the heart of my campaign and the State of the Black Union forum," Obama wrote.

saying hello and shaking the hand of this rather elegant older African American I happened to be talking to. One of them called him Dick, so I figured it out. He was Fun to talk to. We had the WH completely surrounded, curb-to-curb and the People were still just arriving as the front of the march met the "back" of the march.

He just got done. I know Dick's from the Past, and there's some that say we should turn the page, that what's happening now is more important than what has passed, but his experience and message is a treasure for all people of all colors.

Gregory was entertaining. The rest has been informative, inspiring, and at times, tear-provoking.

I don't know if its an age gap or what but I had no idea of what the hell Dick G. was talking about. Then again I was multitasking.

On edit: I checked the TV listings for later tonight and I don't see a repeat in the works, unfortunately.

I missed his voice these days.

30 years ago, my Dad had Dick Gregory records that he played for us. I had forgotten about this until listening to him today. On Monday, when I take my 88 year old Dad and 80 year old mom to a forum about ethics in government, I will thank him.
