1968?
Anyone seeing some curious similarities between this election and the 1968 election? I mean, right down to Pat Buchanon.

On another note, what if, in a strange twist of fate, McCain had to drop out of the race and CHENEY, DICK CHENEY, did a Hubert Humphrey and stepped in the race and ALL the right wing nutjobs rallied around him to smother the voices of a Romney, Giuliani, Huckabee, etc?

Now, if Cheney was the Republican nominee and you had a choice between voting for Obama or Hillary, who would you choose? Cheney or Obama? Cheney or Hillary?

Some people on DU have stated that they will vote for McCain if their candidate doesn't win the nomination. I think a McCain and Cheney really aren't all that different. McCain is just more of a self-righteous turd about his.

8. Cthulhu's approval ratings are higher.
There's a reason they keep Cheney hidden away, and it isn't because he turns to dust in sunlight.

2. Don't see it like 1968 really
Humphrey was a honest to god liberal democrat who could not untangle himself from LBJ's Viet Nam policies, and he went on to loose to Tricky Dick, who was a very smart and capable guy. Cheney has a single digit approval rating. I don't think he could even beat Mike Gravel, much less Obama or Clinton.

3. Don't see the similarities to '68
For one thing Humphrey would have been the nominee regardless of the primaries. Primaries were not nearly as important back in '68. In fact, HHH jumped into the race too late to compete in the primaries so he relied on state conventions and the old democratic alliance of organized labor, party pols and the south for delegates. For instance he swept the delegate field in Pennsylvania this way. Kennedy and McCarthy were splitting the primaries and the anti-war vote would have been split at the convention. At the time of RFK's assassination Humprhey was leading in the delegate count even without competing in primaries. The NY primary was the week after California and RFK was concerned that McCarthy might embarrass him in his backyard.

6. Wow, I didn't know that

I was in elementary school when RFK was assasinated. I do rememeber that he was assasinated after giving a victory speech in California. I didn't know he wasn't leading in the race.

Thanks for the history lesson. :)

4. Dear God.
If Cheney became their nominee, we could run a monkey in a top hat and it would win 300 EVs.

9. LOL TRUE!
Re: Comparison to Humphrey, I wasn't trying to really make it seem like Cheney would actually be like Humphrey. I would consider Humphrey more like Clinton. I'm weird in this whole connect the dots thing to '68. But my main question was WHAT IF? Crazier things have happened. Some people are claiming they would vote for ANYTHING besides our eventual candidate (depends on who you're for now). If you had to choose between a Cheney, I bet an Obama or Clinton would look a lot better!
