Isn't it a no no to WEAR the American Flag?
Excepting military, police and fire uniforms and the like?

So wouldn't it be LESS patriotic to WEAR the flag?

2. A few months after Desert Storm...
I recall seeing a pair of American flag boxers underwear for sale at a local department store. The clerk helping me out (I was buying socks at the time--no, really!) said it was one of the most disgusting things she'd ever seen, and I agreed with her.

Nixon first made flag lapel pins popular during Viet Nam. What more can we say!?:eyes:

B-)

3. Blah, blah, blah ... Obama/Clinton face off about the irrelevant
while the real candidates of change have been kicked to the curb by big $$$s, the M$M, and celebrity endorsements (Edwards, Kucinich, etc.).

You're sitting here arguing about a flag pin ... while hundreds of thousands die due to an illegal war funded by both candidates, corrupt Medicare reform, and too many 'crimes and misdemeanors' to count on both hands.

Yet, neither candidate is standing up and speaking to these injustices and the undermining of our Constitution.

Until either does, shame on any of you for dissing Nader -- or any other progressive who might run.

17. Why?
He is promoting progressive ideas not promoted by either Obama or Clinton (impeachment, independent prosecutors for corruption cases, etc.) .... explain why that is irrelevant.

22. Because, Realistically, You Stand A Better Chance Of Being Elected Than Him
He was once admired, but the way he attempts to rationalize the effect of his 2000 campaign, and it's result, is laughable.

which has to take the cake for bad taste. It's a little ironic to me. Watching a GOP convention (as much as I can stomach of them anyway), you don't see any shortage of American flag pins and cowboy hats, shirts, socks, bandannas, bumper stickers, etc. What they don't realize is that draping the flag over their sweaty bodies like an ornament is ultimately less respectful than burning it.

16. My Alma Mater (Cal) played in the Armed Forces Bowl this year
The game was sponsored by Bell Helicopter and played in Fort Worth, and they do a really nice pre-game with skydiving, flyovers, guys sliding down zip lines, etc.

A whole bunch of small, American flags were handed out. Many were APALLED to see these things left on the ground in and around the stadium as litter. It was especially disconcerting , given the number of active and retired military (folks who should all know better) that were at the game.

24. Flag
Oh, God, don't get me started...

The right-wing flag-worshipers of this country have done more to dishonor the flag than all the flag-burners in history. Every time I see one of those dirty, frayed, banners flapping in front of their houses, I want to knock on their doors and tell them the rules for displaying it. What really gets me is the fact that they leave them up at night! When I was a child, everyone knew that flags must always be taken in at sunset. To wear them was unheard of, and on bumper stickers? Good God.

A flag is never to be displayed that is worn or dirty, it must be folded in a certain manner, and the only proper means of disposing of one is - yes - to burn it.

I remember when the musical "Hair" was a big phenomenon in the sixties, there was a song in it that made fun of flag-worship, but the staging consisted of several hippies folding the flag - properly. Even in that context, it was treated with respect. Now, people in this country are so ignorant, they don't even know how to show it respect. Another failure of our education system.

I have often thought that Flag Day ought to be a day when people are taught how to show proper respect for the flag, what it stands for, and then, all the previous years flags would be burned and replaced with new ones. Wouldn't that be a nice way for people to spend some time thinking about this country, what it is, ought to be, and could be? A nice civic ritual, and one that would turn flag-burning into a positive thing.

Of course, I would then like to see all-night naked dancing around the bonfires...but that's just me...lol!

25. My very liberal parents taught me to properly respect the flag, and that includes not wearing it,
Edited on Mon Feb-25-08 03:02 AM by Herdin_Cats
not using it as a gratuitous decoration, not flying tattered flags from the antenna of your pick-up truck, and not leaving a flag flying in your yard day and night, rain, sleet and snow until it's a tattered rag. (My next door neighbor does the latter and it pisses me off. But he thinks he's being oh so patriotic.)

The interesting thing is that both of my parents, including my Vietnam vet father support(ed) the right to burn the flag as part of free speech. (And so do I.) But they hate(d) the gratuitous and disrespectful strewing of flags everywhere until they become meaningless that has become so accepted after 9/11.

28. Let's be honest about the flag lapel pins. They are the mark of the neo-con,
the Bush supporter, and signal unquestioning support for the so-called war on terror. I think Obama is right not to wear one and I support him in that.

And, like I said, I was taught that you're not supposed to wear the flag as a fashion accessory.
