Let's say that the Democratic nomination battle had been winnowed down to two candidates, and that one of those two candidates (let's call him Barack Obama) was a huge favorite to win. Meanwhile, the GOP nominee has been all but decided. (We'll call him John McCain.)

Now let's imagine that Obama's opponent (we'll call her Hillary Clinton) was desperately slinging every piece of mud she could at him without regard to whether or not her attacks would help John McCain.

Finally, imagine that you found out that Clinton's chief strategist was not only her campaign's leading advocate for these attacks -- but was also the CEO of a public affairs firm whose DC-based lobbying subsidiary was headed up by John McCain's top adviser.

Would you say this posed at least the appearance of a conflict of interest for the strategist in question?

What would you think if you found out that it's all true?

5. The point... Hillary is part of the problem.
I've been telling people this for a while. Elect Hillary: The new boss, same as the old boss.

6. Sounds rather nefarious.

So, is Mark Penn deliberately advising Hillary so she will look bad? Seems every time she starts attacking her polls go down.

I'm not a Hillary supporter, but this stinks.
Not to mention they can coordinate attacks on Obama.
:(

15. I'm thinking that they are making Hill look bad &
hoping some of her attacks will weaken Obama, thus both Dems are weaker, making life easier for McCain no matter which Dem wins.
UGH!!!!
Go Obama!

10. So, one could say that Hillary is now a tool of McCain's campaign.
As the DailyKos article details, the attacks on Obama by Hillary and McCain appear to be coordinated.

And Hillary's continued candidacy is appearing less viable every day.

It's time for the top Dems to step in. It's time for Hillary's supporters to end their support, financial and otherwise.

K&R... spread this far and wide.

16. That's not Penn's only GOP connection
There's also Direct Impact, his grassroots marketing firm. Its current COO is Dave DenHerder, who was regional political director for Bush-Cheney '04 in Ohio, Michigan, and West Virginia. (Yes, Ohio in 2004. Think about it.)

The head of Penn's DC office, who oversees Direct Impact is Robert Tappan. He was Bush's Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs from 2002 to 2006 and Director of Strategic Communications for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq during the first half of 2004.

These people are not only Republicans, they are dedicated Republican propagandists and campaign dirty tricksters. And Mark Penn is their boss.

Gives you confidence, don't it?

17. This fits with my belief all along
that as long as Hillary was the Democratic candidate, the corporate over-class had the deck stacked in its favor. Remember when even Bush talked about the inevitability of Hillary's candidacy? It sounded to me at the time that the fix was in, or at least it was supposed to be.
