FactCheck: First Questions (debates)
According to Fact Check Desk Associate Fact Checker Melissa Ruiz's research, in the two debates previous to last night's -- in California and Texas, the only two two-candidate debates before last night -- Clinton had been asked the first question in 14 rounds, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, in 11.

Last night the number was 9 for Clinton, 7 for Obama.

So overall in the last three debates, Clinton has been asked the first question in 23 rounds, Obama in 18.

So a minor disparity does exist, but Clinton's curious complaint that "in the last several debates, I seem to get the first question all the time?" is inaccurate.

Not to mention likely of not much relevance to the lives of the voters of Ohio, Texas, Rhode Island and Vermont.

7. Her statement was valid.
Obama just parrots what Hillary states for the HARD questions. He is a copy-cat. A cheater without his own plans.

Obama sure can Lip-sinks the debate questions!!!!!!

10. Speaking of parroting...
I've heard the same lame argument from a half dozen ardent Clinton supporters. Is it something they happened to coincidentally think up at the same time, or is it just another hypocritical Clinton talking point?

12. Are you prepared to unite under the presumptive nominee?
Edited on Wed Feb-27-08 03:46 PM by Kittycat
I just read skinner's thread, and started really thinking about this. There's a good chance this will all be done in another week or two. Before you get yourself too far on the hate train, you might want to pull yourself a little closer to center. Sure we can support our candidates positions - but we really need to be a bit more objective and THINK before posting crap anymore.

A time is coming where we'll need to work together. I'm extending my hand in agreement that I won't make down right nasty, hateful, untrue remarks, can you accept and agree to that compromise?

We will not surrender to the empty suit.

19. I told you I was extending my hand.

And it's not about "surrendering". It's about uniting under the presumptive nominee when the time comes. Which could be very soon, if Hillary doesn't pull off TX & OH. If she does, and she pulls out the whole thing, I will do my part and support her.

But we have to draw a truce on the bitter nastiness and out right lies.

Obama is NOT an empty suit. Continuing to perpetuate such lies, is nothing more than a RW tactic, and providing them with ammunition. Start recognizing his policy plans, his platforms etc - you might need to start supporting them. I'm already familiar with HRCs.

9. Not true! Debate 101, as another poster said states that the first
debater questioned is at a disadvantage because it gives all the others time to form their response & gives away their position on the subject. You may not care that the media has been especially anti Hillary during the Primaries, but we need to see just how your opinion will change when Obama is the nominee and that same media decides that their favorite in the General is McCain!

13. What determines the order?
I recall mention of a coin toss in a couple of debates. Could it be not a conspiracy but odds?

14. I don't know in this case, but if it were a coin toss, don't you think Obama
would have slipped in a laugh line about it simply being luck? Even if HE wouldn't have, I think it's safe to say that Russert, Matthews or one of the talking heads would have!!!!

18. I haven't seen
Obama slip in too many laugh line zingers in the debates. It just doesn't seem to be his style, he seems to favor the self deprecating lines. My advice to Hillary would be to lay off of them too. They haven't been landing too well lately. As for Matthews, Russert et.al. there is usually no logical explaination for what they say.

Edited on Wed Feb-27-08 03:42 PM by ginantonic40
Another thread around here somewhere lays it out. 10/20 and 6 of the last 7.

Instead of that complaint she should (and did to some extent last night) point out the asshatishness of half the questions.

11. shouldn't someone who wants to be president want to be asked the question first?
especially when the perception of her by critics would be, "Well, what do you think about this, Bill?"

15. Who has been asked to give their closing statement last in the
last two debates?

Cause he/she who speaks last as a chance to leave the a lasting impression.

20. Ok, why are people missing the obvious truth??
I have no problem with Hillary's SNL reference and her comment about "asking Barack if he
needs another pillow."

It's obvious that her banter about being "first" was just a set up, in order for her to be able
to make those comments about the SNL skit. She needed some kind of reason to segue into her
suggestion that the media is tougher on her and allows Obama to skate.

Her complaining about being "first" did just that.

It was blatantly obvious to me.

Again, I have no problem with what Hillary said or that she was making that underlying
accusation. ...just part of the debate.

21. Senator Clinton wants to be the President of the United States,
the leader of the free world, and her immediate complaint is that she always gets the first questions in the debates? Any chance that she might face tougher things than that as president? If it were actually true it would be unfair, but has anybody informed her that life is not fair? I don't really understand the wisdom of her taking that attitude along with the pillow comment.
