GayWired.com hypocrite of the week: Barack Obama
Having just read that the McClurkin issue "doesn't matter outside of DU", just so you can see what's out there:

===

February 29, 2008

With the critical March 4th Democratic primaries in Texas and Ohio looming near, this week, Barack Obama released an open letter to the gay community in which he writes:

“I’m running for President to build an America that lives up to our founding promise of equality for all—a promise that extends to our gay brothers and sisters. It’s wrong to have millions of Americans living as second-class citizens in this nation.” ...

But my question is: Where was all this love, respect and concern for the gay community back in October, 2007, when the junior Senator from Illinois was actively courting the conservative African-American vote in South Carolina with his pal and supporter, ex-gay minister Donnie McClurkin? The same Donnie McClurkin who performed at the 2004 Republican convention and cozied up to that famous agent of change, George W. Bush.

Where were the ads in the local gay press in South Carolina talking about what a friend the Senator was to the LGBT community? South Carolina: An area where such pronouncements might not have been so well received by the stridently homophobic demographic whose support the Obama campaign needed to defeat Hillary Clinton in that state’s primary?...

Sorry Mr. Obama, this is where the rubber hits the road. Prior to your cowardly actions during the South Carolina primary, the LGBT community willingly accepted you at your word, believing that you would be a true friend, despite your imited record of support on gay and lesbian issues.

But that was then and this is now.

Because he did nothng when he was asked to take action on behalf of an issue of importance the LGBT community, and yet now asks the LGBT community to accept him as a friend and support his political ambitions in Texas and Ohio, Senator Barack Obama is the Hypocrite of the Week.

Just like almost any other candidate.

That's what I love about this country. We're diverse. All gay people, all black people and all women DON'T think alike. Love it.

10. I do think this "award" is deserved, but the McClurkin name-dropping will mean
that the real point of this article is lost on both the rabid Obama supporters and the people who don't really give a shit about GLBT issues.

That real point is that Senator Obama only seems to cuddle up to the GLBT community when it might be politically beneficial. At other times, he'd rather us be at arms length or even outside in the wood shed. Is consistent support from an otherwise good candidate too much to ask for?

Rabid Obama supporters and people who don't give a shit about GLBT issues. You're obviously not a part of either category, so my reply shouldn't concern you. :pals:

to hating him. I'll take your word for it if you say you don't.

Your original posts seem to primarily be ones condemning Obama. If you believe there is more to Obama than just your issues with the way he has handled LGBT issues, I haven't seen evidence of it.

32. I have been clear, he has my vote if he is the nominee.
I said way back last summer that it is way past time for a person of color to be on the ticket.

On the other hand, Obama's ad buy this week to "reach out" to gays is not settling well with me, nor with many others, and that I will not deny. But hate? No.

47. Oh, I have problems with it. I don't like McClurkin.
I just don't see this as the sole or defining position on Obama re: LGBT rights. I look at the whole picture of what Obama has said and done. I don't agree with all of his positions but as I've said many times, I find him to be the frontrunner when it comes to mentioning gay people as part of the fabric of this country.

As for my self-esteem, I've given speeches to thousands at gay rallies. I've been published in papers speaking out against gay hate crimes. I've been out for almost twenty years. My partner and I hold hands and hold each other in public. And I have a very public job in entertainment - I'm out there too.

PS - if you keep insisting that you know whether people have low self-esteem based only on their political stance on one issue on a message board, I think that raises real questions about your maturity, critical thinking skills and lack of open-mindedness.

Some Obama supporters fail to see why this is so important. "Get on the train", "this is a non~story", "Hillary did it too", "He was for gay rights before he was against it" are all excuses we read from the Obama Cult. Enough with excuses! Obama is no friend to the LGBTQ community.

49. Of course Obama's no friend of the LGBT community...
No one who says something like this;
"I also believe that the federal government should not stand in the way of states that want to decide on their own how best to pursue equality for gay and lesbian couples — whether that means a domestic partnership, a civil union, or a civil marriage. Unlike Senator Clinton, I support the complete repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) – a position I have held since before arriving in the U.S. Senate. While some say we should repeal only part of the law, I believe we should get rid of that statute altogether."

... would possibly be someone the LGBT community could support. :shrug:

Look at it seriously for a moment; Why would he destroy his radical fundie support to court the LGBT community?

Well, that's pretty much what he did.
http://mediamatters.org/items/200802290003

At this point, he has nothing to lose by following through on that repeal.

It simply makes more logical sense to believe he can produce change on LGBT issues more readily than anyone else running for president.
