It could be something innocent, say color balance issues from the source material or something similarly techincal, but there's also the possibility of

5. I can see the difference
Looking at the 2 videos, it would appear that someone has changed the color balance on the picture with the result that Barack Obama appears to have darker skin.

We have no reason to believe that Hillary was part of this decision, but it confirms my worst fears about Mark Penn and the people who are running the Clinton campaign.

I guess they figured that Obama's campaign would not want to complain about this publicly, because that would again draw attention to Barack's "blackness" (or lack of it).

It does leave a sour taste ...

7. In full disclosure, it is possible.
It all depends on the source tapes and editing & such when the commercial was created - it might be an innocent color balance issue.

But still, it makes you wonder...

There are some common things done to make an image more intimidating (close cropping, changing exposure) but given what the Clinton machine will do to win I wont put deliberate darkening beyond them..

Or some problem between the monitor and the graphic artist's chair.

It is odd. I could reproduce that ad in Flash, using a video grab of that original YouTube and I don't think it would change his skin color that much. Now, I would have to convert the whole thing to .wmv format so I could upload it to YouTube's server. His skin tone might get darker after conversion.

I don't know. I'm going to vote on the side of crappy video graphic work.

12. Some of the commenters in the Kos diary suggest otherwise.
They're starting to go over this with a fine-toothed comb.

I'm personally not a photoshop expert, but I find this ad to be very suspicious, and well within the ability and the ethical boundaries (or lack thereof) of people like Mark Penn...

it COULD happen. It's pretty fishy that it did.

Most of the problems would arise from the actual video, and how a frame could be then placed into an ad. It depends on the compression, the video generation, etc. Still, it would be a shoddy job to say the least. I know video or multimedia students would get graded for shit on something with an image that shoddy, so for pros to do it? That's iffy. Unless the campaign had some amateur on their staff make up an ad, but why would they do that? Likely they'd hire a pro or already have one that does their work. It's sketchy.

34. Both campaigns have been rushing out the ads.
It's one thing to have weeks to put together a nice, polished, professional looking ad. These attack ads were likely put together in hours. Even the pros get sloppy from time to time.

It depends on the image you're working from. Like my roomates could put together professional looking stuff in like an hour, it was amazing. If they were sloppy, then they were really sloppy, or they could have just not been able to get that good of an image to begin with.

9. It could be darker depending on the video generation
If they got the image off of say a copy of a copy of the original tape, or if they got if from a tv recording, the image will not be as good as say the first generation that is created directly from the original studio recording. The images lack quality and can appear darker etc. I should add that I do have a video degree, so I have seen this on different things I've worked on.

But at the same time, that does look bad. You very well could be right, there is a difference, and I wouldn't be surprised if something bad as afoot here. That would just be a sick, sick tactic to do. I could see the GOP doing that shit, but Dems are supposed to be better than that.

My DH is in the graphic/visual end of advertising. He said the video was obviously manipulated to darken and make Obama's features look 'crude.'

Wow, that Mark Penn guy must be the lowest slimeball there is. But Hillary's people have been doing rotten things. ~sad~

Obama has been getting 'darker' in lots of news stories, etc. I actually wondered if maybe he'd been doing Texas events outside or something. Didn't believe people would actually be so underhanded. I don't understand why there is such a lack of ethics in this country. It's fine to slander human beings all over the place, but miss a payment on a credit card and you're the biggest heathen to ever live.

18. There is a VERY easy way to tell
Get some graphic artists to reproduce the effect.

The algorithms they develop will have to be very specific to get just the right color balance, gamma, and shading. On the other hand, if it's not intentional, there will be components in the graphic that can't be readily reproduced, OR have already been described as technical problems in the media. It should be fairly easy to make a case one way or the other.

ALL image-manipulation software uses algorithmic methods. Several books have been written about it, complete with code.

There is also an entire field of forensic digital imaging research.

Computerized hanky-panky is usually pretty easy to determine.

28. Not particularly hard for those skilled.
There are a couple things that could have been done to achieve this effect. Increase the contrast level, decrease the level of blue in the images, desaturate the images. It's all very basic color manipulation that Photoshop is certainly capable of, as is any professional video editing software.

The top photo here would almost be considered "lightened". Of course, I could care less about skin tone :)

But as another poster opined, it's doubtful Sen. Clinton would have known anything about this; if indeed something was nefarious she should immediately fire and denounce the graphic artist.

I agree that the first of the screen capture pics is too light, too yellow. The photograph you have posted above is not well lit but is closer to life. It's tonality is not that of the screen capture with the outlined darkened lips and the very dak heavier eyebrows. Mojo, when in doubt do a 'squint test.'Eyeball an image and squint.

The image in question was slightly manipulated to darken the darks. Look at Obama's hair in the Hilary campaign commercial. Whoever did the manipulation went a little too far and the heavy hair density -head and eyebrows- gave the game away to me and hubby.

41. You are right. Obama's skin is is brown - not red.
The MSNBC footage on YouTube is not the same as seeing Obama in real life.

You have to take into account the TV make-up, studio lights and video color balance.

Maybe someone was trying to correct that imbalance, and went one shade too far.

But there's nothing to prove it was racially motivated, as far as I know. ;-)

is beyond all bounds of decency. The entire ad is darker than the debate footage. Hillary herself is darker in the ad than she is in any other footage I've seen of her. Is she trying to make herself appear darker as well? Lord help us if the Obama people try to push this nonsense. It will split the party in two and will be the worst hit job I've ever seen in a democratic primary.

They've also compressed the size of Obama's face and made it wider. Easy to do in a video editing program. Interesting they don't show Hillary in this ad because you would see her darker and her face wider as well.

30. Distorting faces is a classic video tactic.
It can be used to make a person's face look a little bit "off" or even sinister, just by squishing or stretching by a touch - it just takes a little to tweak the subconscious and induce fearful emotions in the audience.

First of all, I don't have a problem with someone being Muslim. If there are people who are racist or bigoted against muslims, then I do not want there vote. Same with sexist people. They can all go to the republican party.

What iritates is that MSNBC, CNN, and Foxnews occasionally call Obama, Osama. Equating him with a terrorist, but I don't see how Clinton has a hand in this...

For one HIllary needed clearance from msnbc to use the footage which means that she can (and did) get the raw footage to edit.

Second, she is using professional video people and there is no doubt that the video from MSNBC was not dark like that to begin with. It is so obvious it hurts.

The original picture looks like a mixed race guy and the altered one looks like he's black.

And the text says that he couldn't find time to do his job. Too lazy or just plain shiftless, I guess.

Tell me again how this it isn't racist.

on edit> it isn't just a colorburst problem with the doctored photo. The aspect ratio of his face was altered to make his nose and other facial features look wider an less caucasian.

I'm no expert but can recall numerous times during commercials such ads using the tactic of "shadowing" the opposition (making them look darker) just as scary narrator voice in the background gives some startling quote or statistic. It's all meant to incite fear and uncertainty in the viewer.

I'm not quite sure what to make of the aspect ratio thing, but again, I'm no expert. It may just be another marketing tactic; make your opponent appear out of ratio to incite discomfort on a subconscious level. Surely, there is someone who knows more this than I do?
