Wouldn't you rather be a Senator from a big state rather than VP?
Granted, the VP office has changed a lot in the last 16 years. Gore turned it into an active part of the executive branch and Cheney turned it into Dr. Evil's hidden lair. But, historically speaking, it's an afterthought.

Meanwhile, being a Senator - in and of itself - is kind of awesome. And being Senator from New York or Illinois means that you are always going to sit on the most important committees, give the most important speeches, and be courted by the most important people.

Unless, you really like to travel, I don't see where the upgrade is. Obama has Hillary's VP makes slightly more sense because he's younger and can run again in 8 years. But exactly one sitting VP has taken the White House in the last 150 years or so. Hillary as VP makes no sense, because I just don't see a 68-year-old woman winning the nomination of a major political party - particularly the Democrats who rarely give the nomination to the "next person in line."
