TOOLSHED TALK: Kucinich thanks Derek Owen for providing a meeting space on his organic farm near Hopkinton, N.H. Mr. Owen's cap reads 'Farm Here to Eternity' - a phrase that Kucinich inserted into his remarks on agriculture's importance.

Kucinich: fervently unconventional

By Harry Bruinius | Correspondent of The Christian Science Monitor

HOPKINTON, N.H. - Dressed in a long black overcoat, looking a little like a wizened wizard from the snowy New Hampshire woods, Dennis Kucinich strides confidently into a chilly toolshed at Derek Owen's 200-acre organic farm. As he stops to survey the 30 or so locals who have come to hear him speak, he grins: These are his people. There's Mr. Owen - his gray mutton-chop beard still flecked with snow - holding dirty yellow work gloves as he extends his greeting. His green cap, stuck with a feather, reads, "Farm Here to Eternity." Over there, in the corner, is Mark Lathrop, the burly proprietor of the Monadnock Hemporium, wearing a broad-brimmed leather cowboy hat. He's a fierce advocate for the decriminalization of marijuana. Opposite him, near the door, stands Elizabeth Obelenus, smiling. She's the tall office manager for the Northeast Organic Farming Association, the informal sponsor of the talk tonight, and she's most worried about the unknown dangers of genetically modified organisms.

1. DK is inspirational
His interview on C-Span last week was the first time I heard his full life story. I'm like the Clark supporters in the article; my support stays with Wes, but I certainly appreciate what DK brings to this campaign.

I respect people who are people first, politicians second.

DK is a great American.

2. This article illuminates why we're in the shite
When people say 'he's wonderful but I'm voting for someone else', they show they've lost track of what democracy means and how it works. It's the same thing behind working people voting for Republicans--a kind of 'cargo cult' magical belief system: if you just vote for the rich one then you too will become rich.

No wonder so many Europeans think USAians are dangerous political infants.

3. Sometimes it feels like high school
They really think A is a great person, but A is not highly regarded by the popular kids, so they choose B, who is well-liked by the popular kids, as their prom date.

4. we let ourselves be manipulated so easily
we are more than willing to give away our power as soon as we hear enough people repeating the mantra that the candidate who represents our highest values is "unelectable". It's pitiful
