I find this interesting. The GOP is targeting Leahy this year, and a show of support is vital. His anti-war vote impressed us. We also raised $65 thousand for Boswell in Iowa, even though he did not endorse Dean.

SNIP..."Dean's new political action group provides help for Patrick Leahy
By CHRISTOPHER GRAFF
Associated Press Writer
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Howard Dean has called on his legions of supporters to help re-elect one of his home state senators, Patrick Leahy.

And they are responding: In the 24 hours after Dean issued his appeal, roughly 1,800 backers of Dean's presidential bid donated more than $80,000 to the Leahy campaign.

"We have had a tremendous response," said Carolyn Dwyer, Leahy's campaign manager. "We are very grateful for Governor Dean's support and endorsement."

Dean has transformed his presidential campaign into a political action committee, Democracy For America, and is using the group to raise money and help progressive candidates.

In the first test of its ability to do so, Dean sent an e-mail Monday urging his supporters to rally to Leahy's side......"

SNIP..."the Leahy campaign says it needs to bolster its war chest because the likely GOP nominee, Jack McMullen, has said he plans to raise several million dollars and is "willing to dig into my own pockets for much of the money."

"So far we have one millionaire opponent who has pledged to dig deep in his pocket for what he pledges to be a multimillion dollar race and Senator Leahy needs to prepare for that," said Dwyer.
"END SNIP

1. Dem in trouble? In Vermont?
Edited on Tue Apr-06-04 05:35 PM by Quetzal
One would think that Dean's performance revitalized the Democratic party there.

Is Leahy in trouble?

3. Yes, I think so.
Look at the figures he has vs a millionaire plus who will finance his own campaign with much help.

It is an important statement.....we stand for those we believe in.

5. Bullshit
Vermont will not vote out Lehy, and the RNC itself wouldn't be able to help the Repuke, because a VT Repuke has to be considerably to the left of the RNC and *.

8. What I said:
1. Lehy is not in trouble, haven't seen anything on tv about him being in trouble

2. The RNC won't be actively helping his opponent, because Vetmont Repugs are to the left of most Repugs.

9. So you are questioning our donations? Is that it?
I think it makes a powerful statement. Also, there is just an outside chance you may not know the whole Leahy story. Millionaires who have access to huge amounts at a time, often can win early on. Think about it.

4. Leahy is in no more trouble than any traditional candidate would be...
...facing an opponent that can self finance their campaign thru digging in their own pockets or mortgaging their multi-million dollar home...

15. Money always matters, but Obama in Illinois had about 3 million
and his opponent had over 20 million of his own money. Obama trounced him in the primary.

13. Now if we could just do this....
If 600,000 people donated $120, we would raise enough cash to give $1 million to 40 House races and $6 million to 6 senate races....

And that they would notice...and respect...

If you can offer politicians their version of crack ($$$$), they will do anything for you....look at what soft moeny has done to our Party!!

16. Looks like he could be.
I don't think anyone is assured reelection with all the anger and hatred going on. The right wing is imploding with fury, and they are not going to sit back idly.

21. He's a Vermont Icon and money wont matter
Edited on Wed Apr-07-04 10:59 AM by Doomsayer13
Vermont is a very small state with a very small media market. Assuming that his opponent floods the airways, what's to say that 3 ads and hour will make that much of a difference compared with 5 ads an hour? People will get the message equally, and perhaps be more annoyed at having to see so and so's face every 10 minutes. Leahy will have enough to at least match his opponent in effective ads, and maybe he'll run an ad or two less an hour, but like that'll make a difference when his enourmous popularity is taken into account.

He'll win with over 70% of the vote
