Oops, Obama!
I knew she called Hillary a monster, but did you know that Samantha Powers also said Obama's 16 month plan to get troops out wasn't SERIOUS? Just words! Yet he continually slams her for not having a deadline... Enjoy Mississippi, it's your last win, BO!

73. Shameless masturbatory hawking of your own posts. Good posts, mind you, just shameless hawking.
Obama's campaign screwed up on the NAFTA memo and they need to clean it up. The whole canadian response and dialogue is very confusing with moving parts, multiple characters and everyone pointing at each other. And I'm sure you think there's some back room shenanigans between HRC and the canadian gov't/The Scotsman to sabbotage Obama's campaign. It's not that complicated.

Amend the North American Free Trade Agreement: Obama believes that NAFTA and its potential were oversold to the American people. Obama will work with the leaders of Canada and Mexico to fix NAFTA so that it works for American workers.

2. Oh, MAN.
Part of her quote:

The host, Stephen Sackur, challenged her:"So what the American public thinks is a commitment to get combat forces out in 16 months isn't a commitment isn't it?"

"You can’t make a commitment in March 2008 about what circumstances will be like in January of 2009," she said. "He will, of course, not rely on some plan that he’s crafted as a presidential candidate or a U.S. Senator. He will rely upon a plan – an operational plan – that he pulls together in consultation with people who are on the ground to whom he doesn’t have daily access now, as a result of not being the president. So to think – it would be the height of ideology to sort of say, 'Well, I said it, therefore I’m going to impose it on whatever reality greets me.'"

"It’s a best-case scenario," she said again.

How can it be misrepresented?

"You can’t make a commitment in March 2008 about what circumstances will be like in January of 2009," she said. "He will, of course, not rely on some plan that he’s crafted as a presidential candidate or a U.S. Senator. "It’s a best-case scenario," she said again.

60. Parsing semantics isn't going to help Obama to wiggle out of this one.
Here are the facts. He has that statement posted on his website. He's taken Hillary to task for not implementing a time-limit on troop withdrawal, insinuating that she is not committed to ending the war in Iraq. Then one of his advisors comes out in an interview and states that the 16 month withdrawal plan is a "best case scenario". Those are all facts.

71. Bye then.
You are right that some of it is ridiculous, we just disagree on what part. I had rather believe my eyes, ears and logic than spinmeisters.

On Conference Call, Obama Advisers Parry More Incoming Fire
By Greg Sargent - March 7, 2008, 2:24PM

The skirmishing over Samantha Power continued on an Obama campaign conference call moments ago, with the action shifting over to this recent interview with Power about Obama's commitment to withdrawing from Iraq.

In that interview, Power said the following about Obama's future approach to withdrawal from Iraq: "He will, of course, not rely on some plan that he’s crafted as a presidential candidate or a U.S. Senator."

61. It's not bullshit; Power is right
It's ridiculous to claim unequivocally that you're going to withdraw US troops 18 months from now. No one can legitimately make that statement.

58. When will Obama supporters finally realize they are being played?
First he promises to serve his full term in the Senate--unless he plans on losing, that was a lie.
He tells Democrats he's anti-NAFTA but has his surrogate tell the Canadians not to worry, then lies that a meeting ever took place.
Promises he will run a new kind of campaign without the politics of negativity--but says now that Hillary has gone negative, he'll have to break his promise on that one, too.
Tells the American people he has a specific plan and timetable for Iraq, but his now-departed military advisor says we shouldn't hold him to that promise, either.

How many more broken promises will it take for people to realize that they are being played, bigtime?

89. Oh, right
He said if his Republican opponent agreed to public financing, Obama would, too. Lied about that.

And I just thought of another one. He said that superdelegates shouldn't decide the nomination, but now that he sees he can't reach 2025, he's gone back on that, as well.

Keep 'em coming, kids.

76. Here's what Wes Clark said about this flap:
Gen. Wesley Clark: “I’m quite concerned about what we heard from the Obama campaign because I’m not sure where it leads us….”

Former State Dept. official James Rubin: In Obama campaign “it’s amateur hour on making foreign policy.”

then details changed, but the plan did not. Are you now telling me that Obama should stick to his withdrawal plan even if things change in the next 9 months?

115. She simply stated the OBVIOUS
and the only possible RATIONAL position on this. You cannot let what you say during a campaign 100% dictate what you will do once 1. you have all the facts that a president does, and a candidate does not; and 2. you deal with the situation that exists almost one year from now, that may be quite different from the situation now. Anybody that would state that they will do exactly what they claim during a campaign. IRRESPECTIVE of the facts at the point when the policy has to be implemented is either an idiot or completely disingenuous (also known as lying through their teeth). The Clintons are not idiots. Draw your own conclusions.

The only thing that I do not like about all this is that it should be a non-issue, and the Obama camp should defend what Power said, instead of being intimidated into distancing themselves from this completely reasonable position. I do not think they are doing that, and IMHO it is wrong.

As to what Clark and Rubin have said, as others have noted, shame on them!
