Lefty, righty, or centrist?

Where do you place yourself on the political spectrum?

I'm not a "Progressive" or "moderate" I'm a Liberal damnit!!!

even more left since I started actually learning something about politics and the USA.

I USED to align with the Dalai Lama, NOW I'm even more left than he is!

But, all that will be said is... "Don't let the door....."

It all depends on what others mean by "left".

Since I'm about as "left" as it gets, I don't have to guess.

But, "left" ain't what it used to be, so those who were "right" 10 years ago, are now "left".

I'm suddenly feeling dizzy.

1. I believe the Government has a duty to regulate the power of
corporations when the corporate interests conflict with public
interests.

2. I believe that the full protection of the Bill of Rights outlined in
the Constitution should not be curtailed.

3. I believe in a woman's right to choose.

4. I believe that universal healthcare is a moral imperitive and can
benefit both the public and the business structure of this country.

5. I believe in the seperation of church and state and that public money should not go to fund religious organizations.

6. I believe in the social safety net. I believe that government can
give a hand up and not just a hand out.

7. I believe in proper education funding.

8. I believe in morality in foreign policy. Too often, being pragmatic has turned to being opportunistic and bullying. In the end, we always pay for it.

9. I believe in protecting the environment and this can be done without being proxies for industry and without destroying industry.

10. I believe that election finance reform is not even close to complete and needs serious attention in regards to money and media execution.

11. Gun safety laws need to be strengthened but a ban on firearms is
not practical or workable.

12. Corporate welfare should end. It is not the government's job in a
capitalist society to bail out or give aid to failing corporations.

13. Small business initiatives that promote competition in a free market society is not the same thing as corporate welfare and should endure to promote the ideals of small business owners.

14. I believe in a military strong enough to defend the nation.

15. Independence from non-renewable energy sources should be a national goal with a set of real deadlines.

16. I believe in a worker's right to organize and collectively bargain.

You sound like a very reasonable person.

I put liberal because I'd say that I believe in proper fundering for government programs but with fiscal responsability at the same time. Basically I think that we should fully fund social programs but congress and the white house need to do a better job of keeping excess spending on pork projects (ESPECIALLY in the defense department) down. I belive that tax cuts for the rich are a bad idea and I think that ultimately the middle class are better off if their kids' education is paid for and their healthcare costs are drastically reduced, they will get full social security payments, and medicare/perscription drugs in their old age over $400-500 a year in tax cuts. The only fiscal issue I am somewhat conservative on is social security. I think privatization in theory is a great idea but I also know better than to trust Republicans with something like social security and thus I'm not in favor it at this time.

Socially I agree with almost every liberal position except school prayer. I think that if the football team wants to say a prayer before a game it's okay with me so long as the coach or another authority figure does not participate. I think that we should de-criminalize marajuana but not legalize it totally. I don't think we should have marajuana sold over the counter in drug stores, but at the same time I don't think people should go to jail for it. I say, take all the money that we would've spent keeping nonviolent criminals who's only offense is getting caught with possession or smoking it and put it into the education system. I bet we'd keep quite a few more kids off drugs in the first place.

Defense and foreign affairs, I pretty much agree with most of what the Clinton administration did. We should use our military to stop genocidal dictators and to address threats to our nation. That doesn't mean however, that we need full-scale wars. I also think that we need to help fight poverty and lack of education in third world countries because it ultimately helps fight the long term effect which is more terrorism.

because I don't see anything leftist or radical about wanting a clean environment and a woman having the right to say what she will do with her own body.

I'm in the middle but I lean to the left on most social issues.

would understand that it's not about left vs right or Republicans vs Democrats but about freedom vs authoritarianism. Just look at DU. Pick a thread on anything from gun control, to the draft, to mandatory service requirements for high school graduation, to smoking, or the war in iraq/war on terror/war on drugs, or just about any hot issue. What do you find? There's no agreement on any issue. Basically you can go into any thread and see people arguing for liberty or arguing for more government control.

Right here at DU there are people who think that there should be no government regulation whatsoever of guns. There are also people who think that only the government should confiscate all guns from civilians. There are people who want to spend more money fighting the war on drugs. There are people who want to legalize all drugs. There are people who say the draft is slavery and there are people who think there should be mandatory national service for everyone.

While there is some overlap as far as which side people are going to take, generally, people who are for liberty on one issue are more than likely going to be for liberty on other issues. Authoritarians rarely just want to control you on their one pet issue.


It's not just DU or Democrats that are like this either. There are plenty of people in the Republican party who care just as much about liberty as the people in the Democratic party who care about liberty. Unfortunately, most of those people are stupid. They continue to vote for authoritarians in both parties and we all lose because of it.

I had a conclusion of some kind in mind, but this is getting long and no one cares anyway as long as Bush loses in November. In conclusion, Libya is a land of contrasts.
